You can clearly see Stella’s spine! Do you think she is too thin?
We do not think so!
Stella, at the point where you cannot see her spine, is the same point at which she becomes extremely overweight—as you can see. Her allergies flare, she cannot handle playing with her friends, she is anxious, and she could care less about training because she has zero reason to learn anything new!
Your dog’s body composition might not seem like it has anything to do with their state of mind, but it is actually one of the most important aspects of training and behavior modification!
And because dogs are structurally built differently, what may appear healthy for one dog can be extremely unhealthy for another!
We always hear, “You should be able to see their last two ribs” as a measurement of acceptable weight. This is not true!
For example, on a Doberman—with their large rib cages—you may see the ribs, yet the dog can still be overweight!
Or seeing hip bones (to a degree) on an Afghan Hound or Standard Poodle is actually ideal!
And seeing Stella’s spine is perfectly acceptable for Stella and her body!
“But my veterinarian says my dog is healthy—they didn’t mention my dog was overweight!”
They often do not! It’s much like a human doctor—they’d rather stick to the reason for the visit, be it yearly shots or that upset stomach.
If you want to train your dog, the first place to start is with your dog’s health! Getting your dog back to nature will solve so many issues inside and out!
