PLAYING WITH YOUR DOG!
Stop overthinking it. Just play. 🎉
You can find endless videos showing dogs flying through the air, crispy “outs,” tug mechanics, toy handling techniques, toy motivation, obedience-in-play… but the truth is: most people overcomplicate it.
Now go find a toy [or toys] your dog loves and STOP doing these 5 things! ⬇️
1️⃣ Too much duration in obedience.
So you just figured out how to incorporate play and obedience! 👏 Ask for that “down,” but the SECOND those elbows hit the ground—mark and reward with the toy! Holding positions kills momentum and reduces drive. Keep it FAST, FUN, and rewarding.
2️⃣ Making your dog lose.
Stop trying to “win” the game. This is not the Olympics! Let your dog win! Winning builds confidence, engagement, motivation, and a healthier play relationship. This is how you create a dog that wants to work with you.
3️⃣ Tugging too hard.
You don’t need Hulk strength. A pinky-finger grip maintains safety and keeps the game about the dog’s power, not yours.
4️⃣ Playing the “KEEP AWAY” Game
Walking toward your dog makes them run away. Move backwards, open your body, and invite them to offer you the toy to play!
5️⃣ Playing too long.
Your tug session should be 5–10 minutes max. Short, focused play keeps arousal optimal and leaves your dog eager for the next session. Quality over quantity always wins.
