Hershey Pennsylvania Groom Expo 2024 sign out!!!
Whew, where to even begin. This has been such an amazing weekend-full of amazing people and seminars, and all the shopping for new awesome pet products. I took 2 four hour long two day sessions for pet skin and coat health by the veterinarian and founder of pet skin academy, Dr. Cliff Faver. That was such an amazing class that helped me brush up on my routines and facts, and help me understand pets skin on a scientific level. I sat through more seminars and watched some of our leading professionals, Jayne Gallagher, Olga Zabelinskaya, and Colin Taylor, and Jilly Mucciarone groom and style some amazingly stunning dogs, and picked up some great techniques I cannot WAIT to try out!!! I met new friends, made new connections, and of course new memories to cherish. I cannot put into words how grateful I am to have ended up in such a rewarding career that is so rewarding, and full of growth, and is backed by such an amazing supportive community. I love these yearly get togethers so much. Until next time, peace out Pennsylvania!!! ✌️✌️🫶

Officially back in business after an amazing week away in Chicago for All American Groom expo!!! It was so much fun assisting for competition, and getting my hands on some of the cutest little fluffs Illinois has to offer. I of course took some classes and sat through some seminars- there is always something new to learn and it’s incredibly important to me to stay refreshed and up to date for my clients 🫶🫶🫶

With that said, it’s good to be home and back in the salon seeing some familiar faces 🫶🫶🫶

Couldn’t have said it better! Stop leaving your pets in untrained hands! The dangers and injuries are not worth it.

Couldn’t have said it better! Stop leaving your pets in untrained hands! The dangers and injuries are not worth it.

Did you know that pet grooming is a completely unregulated industry? There is no requirement for formal education, no required continuing education, and no required testing or certification?

Anyone and everyone can just pick up a pair of clippers and start advertising themselves as a groomer and charge people for a service they aren’t trained to perform.

It’s completely up to you, the owner, to do your research and make sure the person you are trusting with the health and safety of your pet is qualified to care for them.

Every groomer should be trained, and that very basic training takes months.

It takes years to truly master the ins and outs of grooming and everything that goes along with it.

Pet grooming is so much more than just a hair style.

*It’s knowing dog behavior and how to safely handle all the different personalities and quirks.

*It’s recognizing health conditions that would be better suited seeing a vet such as skin or ear infections.

*It’s being prepared for any and all emergencies that can happen, from seizures to allergic reactions, to nicks and cuts and quicked toenails without panicking.

*It’s knowing how to best deal with a variety of coat types properly.

*It’s being able to know when to stop a service on a particular dog due to behavior or health.

*It’s having the knowledge and patience to handle a different species while holding razor sharp clippers or 8 inch long scissors.

At the very least, the groomer you use should seek out continuing education to make sure they are current on the changes in the industry, from upgrades in products to tools that make the process easier for the pet and them.

They should be current on their pet cpr/first aid certification which needs repeated every couple of years.

They should be able to answer your grooming related questions with knowledge and confidence and if they don’t know the answer they should know where to find it.

They should have an emergency plan in place with a local veterinarian in case anything happens, because when working with animals it’s not a matter of if something happens, but when.

They should come recommended by other pet owners and pet professionals.

And it’s worth noting that there is nothing wrong with using a groomer that is still in training, but they should be working alongside an experienced groomer and under their direct supervision.

Ask the questions, after all you are paying them for a service. A groomer who has spent time and money to be as educated as possible is excited to share their knowledge!

Gracie and Leo felt SO much better after their long overdue spa day 🫶🫶🫶

I long debated sharing their pictures, but knew they were far too cute to not share with everyone- plus, use this as the perfect opportunity for some education!

Pomeranians, just like Gracie and Leo- are a triple coated breed. You heard that right- triple!!! Like many triple coated breeds, like chow chows, and samoyeds, these guys have an additional undercoat layer that makes their skin and coat incredibly sensitive to trimming. Once their coats are cut- you run the risk of wrecking havoc to their natural growth cycle. This could lead to matting, thinning of the coat, or even chronic conditions such as black skin disease or alopecia. The only situation acceptable to shave a triple coated dog is if they are older and grooming is becoming too strenuous, or if their coat has become pelted. Do not let your groomer take a clip comb, or blade to the body of your Pomeranians healthy coat. It may be cute- but it’s not worth the long term affects you are guaranteed to see in the future. Cutting their fur will also not make them any cooler- you are actually raising their critical low body temperature by shaving them-thus increasing risk of heat stroke!!!

So do what is right for your pets-and keep trimming minimal. Light trimming of their sanitary area paired with a good deshed should keep them tangle free, happy, and healthy!!!

Keep your pets at home if you cannot bring them with you where you are going. This is a very preventable tragedy 💔

CRACKING OPEN A WINDOW DOES NOT HELP!
Despite the warnings, hundreds of dogs in the U.S. die every year after being left in a hot car. Someone you know may need to read this very important message. ⚠️🚙⚠️
SIX MINUTES is all it takes for a dog to overheat in a hot car.
Your dog could suffer serious injury or die in a matter of minutes if left alone in a car.
• The temperature inside a closed vehicle left in the sun can double within 12 minutes.
• At least 75% of the temperature increase in a closed vehicle occurs within 5 minutes of closing the vehicle, and at least 89% of the temperature increase occurs within 15 minutes of closing the vehicle.
• Temperatures exceeding 104˚ F can lead to death or serious injury for the occupants.
• Temperatures in a closed vehicle sitting in the hot sun can reach 160˚F and above. An animal will suffer immeasurably and may die before the temperature reaches 150˚F.
• Even when parked in the shade, the vehicle temperatures can exceed 104˚C.
• Leaving windows down more than 2 inches on an unattended vehicle will not prevent a car from reaching extreme temperatures.
• Even if the animal is revived, they can die due to severe internal organ damage.
Your dog trusts you to have their best interest at heart ALWAYS.
Please don’t risk their safety.
If you are not taking your dog inside your destination with you, PLEASE leave them at home where they are comfortable and safe.

PetQuest 2024 sign out!!!

Continued education is so so important no matter how long you’ve been grooming. This industry is ever evolving and pets deserve the best care possible. I have always, and will always, strive for the best for my clients and peers. There’s always something we can get out of taking time away from the salon to participate and attend these events. I had so much fun getting together with friends and peers, and looking up to our “celebrities”, and I absolutely enjoyed the conversation and seminars that I was able to attend. Thank you BARKLEIGH and The Roberts Center for hosting us- I can’t wait until the next groom show 💪💪💪

Also, congratulations to my peers and fellow coworkers for their hard work competing!!!
