Christmas Collection Update!

With the gracious help of our clients, staff, and so many others, Brandywine is happy to say that our Christmas collection for patients undergoing chemo treatments far surpassed all our expectations! In total we collected enough items to put together 173 care packages and 60 blankets as well as special bags for kids and toys to give to the children’s hospital! Since the collection completed, our staff as well as clients have been working hard to assemble each bag with care and get all the blankets tied and ready to go. With so many amazing donations, we were able to not only donate to ECU Health in Greenville, but also Southeastern Medical Oncology in Goldsboro, Regional Medical Oncology in Wilson, Physicians East in Greenville, UNC Nash Cancer Center in Rocky Mount, as well as Wake Med Children’s Hospital. Without everyone’s support, we would not have been able to do this amazing project in honor of Karen. So, thank you again to everyone who helped make this possible!

While we find Christmas decorations beautiful and festive, our pets don't always think the same. There are many hazards with pets and decorations but one that many do not think about is a snow globe and most people would not know that some snow globes contain antifreeze. This heartbreaking post was shared with us and we, like the original poster hope that this helps to educate others in case this were to ever happen to them.
If you ever suspect that your pet has gotten into antifreeze or any other toxin, please call ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 and seek veterinary help.

🎄 Christmas is quickly approaching which means it is time for our Brandywine Christmas collection and we have chosen to collect donations for Veterans Residential Services - Wilson, NC. This will be our 3rd year collecting for this great local organization that does so much for our veterans and their families. We will be collecting non-perishable food items through December 23rd to help stock their food pantry. While we are mainly collecting items for the 2-legged veterans, we will also take donations for their canine and feline companions as well! We will officially start collecting on Monday November 28th!
Veterans Residential Services - Wilson, NC is a local organization that “strives to provide quality support and services to low-income, homeless, and at-risk veterans and their families.” They offer services such as food, clothing, transportation, job search assistance, tuition assistance, and so much more.
When you drop off your donation, please make sure to take a tag off of our tree and fill out your information on the back to enter into our Christmas drawing to win either a dog or cat gift bag! The winners of the drawings will be announced the week after Christmas.

We know it's early to start thinking about Christmas, but one of Brandywine's favorite Holiday traditions is filling and collecting shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child so we decided to get an early start this year to try to collect as many as we can! We have plenty of empty boxes available to be filled so come by and pick up a few then bring them back when you are done! Boxes will be due back at the beginning of November but we will keep everyone updated once we have a specific date.

🚨 Important Boarding Announcement! 🚨
Upcoming changes for boarding requirements

For the safety of the dogs boarding at Brandywine Veterinary Hospital, starting November 7th 2022, we will require that all dogs boarding be fully vaccinated against Canine Influenza, in addition to the other vaccines already required. This means that all dogs must have completed at least the initial 2 vaccines and after completion of those, are boosted yearly. If you are unsure of your pet’s vaccination status or need to get them in for a vaccine, please give us a call! We appreciate your understanding as we make this change for the safety of your dog as well as others staying in our facility.

So what is Canine Influenza?
Canine Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory virus that is transmitted dog to dog and was first identified in 2004. CIV, as it is commonly known, is transmitted through close contact with an infected dog often in a restricted space such as a boarding facility, daycare, shelter, or grooming facility. Dogs who are infected will have an onset of symptoms 2-3 days after being infected and peak shedding of the virus is around 3-4 days however, they can continue to shed the virus for up to 24 days and can continue to cough for weeks following recovery from the infection. The most common symptoms shown include nasal discharge, cough, and high fever. While CIV infections have not shown a significant mortality rate, CIV infections as well as other respiratory viruses can compromise the lungs normal defenses increasing the risk for secondary pneumonias. The best way to protect your dog from the effects of Canine Influenza is having them vaccinated.

If you have any questions regarding these changes, please feel free to contact us and we will be glad to help!
