Lethargy and disorientation
Paralysis or seizures
Early detection is crucial. If you suspect your dog has rabies, contact your veterinarian immediately. Diagnosis is confirmed through laboratory testing, often involving a brain tissue sample.

Ensure your dog is up-to-date on rabies vaccinations. This is not only crucial for their health but also a legal requirement in many areas.

🐾 Canine Bordetella: What Pet Owners Need to Know
Bordetella bronchiseptica, commonly known as kennel cough, is a highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs. It spreads through close contact, such as at dog parks, boarding facilities, or grooming salons. Symptoms include a persistent, dry cough, runny nose, sneezing, and sometimes mild fever.
Testing usually involves a physical exam and may include throat swabs or PCR tests. Vaccination is the best defense and is often required for boarding or daycare. Keeping your dog up-to-date with their Bordetella vaccine can help protect them from this common illness. If you notice any symptoms or have concerns, contact your vet for advice and care.

🐾 Canine Influenza Awareness 🐾
If your dog will be boarding or visiting dog parks, it’s especially important to consider the canine influenza vaccine. This vaccine is recommended for dogs in these social settings because it helps protect them from the highly contagious dog flu, which spreads easily in places with lots of canine contact.
Signs of canine influenza include coughing, sneezing, and fever. If you notice any symptoms, get in touch with your vet. Getting your dog vaccinated can provide crucial protection. Ensure your pet is up-to-date to keep them safe and healthy while they enjoy their time away or at play!

Day 6: Spring Pet Poisons - Daffodils contain lycorine which can trigger vomiting. Ingestion of the bulb, plant or flower can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and even possible cardiac arrhythmias or respiratory depression. Daffodil ingestions can result in more severe symptoms.🌼 - Ingestion of the Crocus flower can cause general gastrointestinal upset including vomiting and diarrhea. These should not be mistaken for Autumn Crocus, part of the Liliaceae family, which contain colchicine. The Autumn Crocus is highly toxic and can cause severe vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver and kidney damage, and respiratory failure. Signs may be seen immediately but can be delayed for days. - The toxic principle for Tulips is very concentrated in the bulbs. When the plant parts or bulbs are chewed or ingested, it can result in tissue irritation to the mouth and esophagus. Typical signs include profuse drooling, vomiting, or even diarrhea, depending on the amount consumed. With large ingestions of the bulb, more severe symptoms such as an increase in heart rate and changes in respiration can be seen. 🌷 - Although most fertilizers are not very toxic (resulting in minor gastrointestinal irritation when consumed), some fertilizers can be fatal without treatment. Some ingredients to be aware are blood meal, rose and plant fertilizers, pesticides/ insecticides, and iron. For more information about the topics above make sure to go to the Pet Poison Helpline website to learn more! If you suspect your pet may have ingested one of the items above make sure to give us a call at 407.604.3043 or contact the Pet Poison Helpline at 844.492.9842! ☎️🐾
Day 5: Easter Pet Poisons Easter is right around the corner and although the vibrant colors and tasty chocolates are delightful to us our pets cannot say the same. Certain types of chocolate such as baker’s chocolate and dark chocolate pose the biggest problem. Although chocolate can be very toxic to dogs, the darker and more bitter the chocolate, the greater the danger. This is because of a chemical toxicity called methylxanthines (a relative of caffeine) and results in vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, an abnormal heart rhythm, seizures, and possibly death. Easter Lilies which are traditionally white can also be other colors as well such as white with a pink tint. A flower which is beautiful to look at but are highly toxic to cats! With the Easter Lily every part is toxic. Early signs include vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy and dehydration. These flowers can cause kidney failure and the symptoms will worsen as kidney failure develops. Some cats will experience disorientation, staggering and seizures as well. You’ll want to keep these up and away from cats where they won’t be grooming! Easter grass comes in a variety of colors and can be very harmful to cats and dogs. Easter grass is commonly found in Easter baskets. When your cat or dog ingests something “stringy” like Easter grass, it can become anchored around the base of the tongue or stomach. This makes it unable to pass through the intestines. It can result in a linear foreign body and can cause severe damage to the intestinal tract, often requiring expensive abdominal surgery. If you suspect that your dog or cat got into any of the three listed above or suspect it may have ingested something toxic call us or the Pet Poison Helpline immediately! Remember the sooner the better it is always important to act fast! Make sure to like and share 🥰🐾💗

Make sure to keep these away from your furry friends. Some symptoms to look out for are upset stomach, drooling, shaking of the head, and decreased appetite. ❌ High salty and fatty foods can cause pancreatitis in animals a healthy option to cook for your pet(s) would be steamed rice and steamed chicken! Feel free to add in steamed or raw veggies like carrots and broccoli! Remember not to add in any butter or seasonings. While this may taste good to us it can leave our animals with a bad tummy ache.
