Make way for Django, king of 👑 This baby-faced Alaskan Husky almost always has his tongue poking out of his mouth, whether he is in the middle of contemplating the meaning of life, or patiently waiting for his turn to get treats, or even when he’s sleeping!

Django is one of the most chill huskies you’ll ever meet. He’s very sweet and submissive around other dogs, always deferring to everyone else’s authority. He also would likely be fine living with a cat since he prefers to avoid them rather than chase! Plus, he’s great with kids and super easy to walk.

Django would make an amazing dog for pretty much anyone! Due to kennel stress, he has been in foster in Davis with our resident husky expert volunteer. If you’re interested in meeting Django, please email [email protected]

In the midst of kitten season, we’re having our own little puppy explosion 😱 All of them are larger breed mixes (we think) and are cute as HECK.

Oftentimes people seem to choose buying a puppy over adopting a shelter dog because they want to be able to influence its behavior and start training early in the dog’s development…well here’s your chance to do that AND save a shelter pet’s life at the same time!

We have lots of appointment openings this week. Grab a slot ASAP for first dibs on the puppy of your choice: friendsofycas.org/dogs 🐾

When we learned Daisy was exposed to parvo, our shelter team moved quickly to secure her a foster home where she could quarantine. She has fortunately tested negative for parvo and has pulled through without catching it! Now just 9 weeks old, baby Daisy is looking for a forever home.

We think she is some kind of lab mix, but your guess is as good as mine as ours! She’s an adorable roly poly baby who will benefit from an adopter who is ready and willing to take on the responsibilities of puppy ownership. Fortunately, Daisy is a smart cookie and is also very food motivated. She’s great at using a p*e pad and already knows a couple of commands. She is also crate trained.

It’s rare we get puppies this young — this is your chance! Her adoption fee is just $50 and covers the cost of her spay, vaccines, microchip, and flea/tick + heartworm preventative.

Hey Davis p*eps — we have the perfect excuse for you to treat yourself to some Chipotle 👀 Tomorrow (Wednesday, August 14) between 5-9pm, the Davis Chipotle Mexican Grill location will be donating 25% of sales to support the veterinary care of our shelter pets!

All you need to do is mention the fundraiser at checkout!

If you’re ordering online ahead of time for pickup, you can use the code Q94BGJH

Please spread the word to your friends! With these funds, we will be able to cover the costs of specialized veterinary medical procedures to get them ready for adoption. When people come in asking for a dog who’s good with people and other dogs, we always recommend Rosita Fresita! But so far no one has chosen her 😢 She’s so sweet, friendly, and the ultimate cuddle bug.

During a recent trip to a volunteer’s house, she was an excellent guest! She didn’t have any accidents indoors, chilled in a crate for a bit, played well with a big dog, ignored an antisocial little dog, and spent a lot of time cuddling on the couch 😘

Rosita Fresita is approximately 2 years old and weighs 45 lbs.

We have so many appointment openings tomorrow between 11am-3pm! Sign up for a slot ASAP and come meet our adoptable pups: friendsofycas.org/dogs

We thought adopting Jewel would be a no brainer — she’s gorgeous, friendly with people and other animals (including cats), and has such a happy-go-lucky personality. She has been at our shelter since LAST YEAR and so far no takers (when we promoted her last time, someone said they’d get in touch to meet her but we never heard back 😢 😫).

Jewel is an exceptional playmate for other dogs. She is the superstar during playgroups, being so friendly and easygoing no matter which dog joins her that day.

Jewel is silly, playful, and the perfect companion for another dog. If she sounds like what you’ve been looking for, come meet her this week!

P.S. local artist Laura Hanke made a gorgeous portrait of Jewel and has donated it to be given to who ever adopts this special girl!

Rare breed alert 🚨 We have a senior Pocket Puffball named Arthur! He’s estimated to be around 8 years old and needs a dental — our partner nonprofit will cover the cost of this procedure for the adopter so all he needs now is a forever home.

Arthur is great with dogs and cats (in that he pretty much ignores both) and would also likely be good with kids. Plus, he doesn’t shed! He’s very mellow, either following people around the house or sleeping 🥹

It blows our mind that a boy as handsome as Nanook is STILL waiting for a forever home. We get that folks are apprehensive about adopting a husky in the summertime but we think adopting a shelter husky is an amazing option 365 days in the year.

Nanook is one of our obedience class superstars and knows all of the basic commands. He’s good with other dogs who can appreciate his husky playstyle and has done really well at off-site adoption events. He’s also done very well with kids 🥹 Plus, he has the most GORGEOUS heterochromia coloration in his eyes!

This guy is playful but also loves to lean on you and melt into your lap. He’s a big, confident pup who has been waiting to be chosen since JANUARY 😫 Come meet Nanook at our shelter!

His adoption fee is just $50 and includes his neuter, microchip, vaccines, and flea/tick and heart worm preventative.

Update: ADOPTED🐾

This precious boy named Boris was found in a tragic situation — on the side of the road in Dunnigan, just sitting next to the dead bodies of 2 other dogs (presumably dumped, possibly hit by cars). The skin on his neck and back is flaking and in the middle of healing from flea dermatitis, most likely due to not being on any kind of flea preventative.

He was incredibly shut down and scared at the shelter but has been a delight since transitioning into a foster home. Though he had a couple indoor accidents at first, he’s quickly learning the potty training ropes. He’s also very good in the crate and sleeps through the night without issues, as well as napping for parts of the day in the crate as well.

Boris tolerated a bath SO well, and is easy to handle and pick up as needed — it helps that he’s only 15 lbs! He plays great with other dogs (including ones much bigger than him). He was curious when meeting a neighborhood cat but after some classic cat hissing tactics, he was scared off and left the cat alone.

Boris is the sweetest companion who loves to keep his people company. He enjoys an occasional game of fetch, but is also happy to just lay there by your feet while you work or chill out.

He is an overall wonderful little guy. He’s the perfect portable size, but also built sturdy and tough like a terrier. He also has such an adorable scruffy snout 🥹

Email [email protected] to schedule a meet and greet with Boris through his foster!

In addition to receiving this box of abandoned kittens today, we currently have 58 cats/kittens available for adoption — we have so many that some are currently even being housed in our back feral rooms because there is no space in the adoption rooms 😫

Help us make more room for the kittens who keep flooding in every day — drop by between 11am-3pm tomorrow and adopt a cat or kitten (or 2!).

10-year-old Autumns wants to know why you haven’t come to meet her during our walk-in hours today 🤔

This beautiful senior hound’s owner had to surrender her to our shelter after making a heartbreaking decision due to family illness. She is reportedly good with dogs cats, chickens, and people. She LOVES food (she is a bit chunky 😅) but during her recent day trip to a volunteer’s house she proved she still had good manners and did not counter surf. Instead, she just waits for bits of food to drop while you’re cooking or eating at the table 😂 Autumn also appears to be potty trained and knows how to get in the car on her own.

We’re open for walk-ins until 3pm until we reopen tomorrow at 11am for MORE walk-ins.

The star of last weekend’s adoption event was definitely low rider Skipper! This outgoing happy chonk is an excellent choice for a first time dog owner who wants an easygoing buddy who gets along with other dogs and people (including kids). He shows some curiosity around cats but we think he has potential to do well with them through a proper intro.

During his sleepover at a volunteer’s house, Skipper was an excellent house guest and errand buddy. He enjoys quietly laying down inside or outside, and is fine being left alone free-roaming in the house without any accidents!

The only thing that seems to deter potential adopters is his dermatitis 😢 His skin was so bad when he arrived at our shelter as a stray, but so far giving him Purina Pro Plan’s Ha (hypoallergenic) kibble, a weekly medicated bath, and keeping him in a low-stress environment has kept his flare-ups under control.

This excellent boy is an absolute gem. He is so fun to hang out with and did really well at a bustling brewery. Give Skipper a chance during our walk-in adoption hours tomorrow between 11-3!

“GET US OUT OF HERE” —Brutis, the photobomber

Our little dogs generally get adopted and rescued so quickly but it’s the big dogs who end up stuck at the shelter for months and months on end 🥲

Osito (GSD in back-left) was adopted from us in October and then supposedly rehomed to someone else and subsequently abandoned. He was found stray and the original adopter did not want him back 😭 His size seems to deter adopters, but this guy is actually incredibly sweet and well-mannered.

Alpha (hound mix in back-right) was surrendered to us in May for unknown reasons. As far as we can tell, he’s a very big boy but also very friendly and not too difficult to handle. As long as you’re willing to put some time into leash training, Alpha would make a great companion!

Brutis (pittie mix in front) is Mr. Playful and would love to go to a home with another playful dog or with a playful person who will take him out for daily exercise (or BOTH). This guy was surrendered when he grew bigger and more energetic than his original owner had anticipated. He’s still just a big puppy and we hope you give this silly boy a chance. He does NOT do well in the shelter but has done so well at a volunteer’s home and during a recent brewery outing.

Let’s get our big boys adopted this week 🙏🏻

We have FIVE adoption openings today. If you’re interested in meeting dogs today, please email us at [email protected] to schedule an appointment. Otherwise you can try coming during our walk-in hours tomorrow or Saturday between 11am-3pm.

Bolt has been a fixture at our adoption events…but he hasn’t found a forever family despite being adopted TWICE before 😭 He was returned the first time for separation anxiety and the second time for being leash reactive on walks.

He’s a handsome pup who might look very serious—he doesn’t always make a great impression because of his stoicism and chill vibes. But he actually has a goofy side that enjoys a good upside down cuddle session on the couch. Bolt also knows so many commands some he’s VERY treat-motivated!

He has done very well living in a temporary foster home with several dog-savvy kids and two other friendly dogs. Bolt may not be super into playing with other dogs but is generally fine with the chill ones. We actually think he might benefit from having a doggie companion at home to help with his separation anxiety since he was totally fine left at home for several hours with just his fellow foster doggos to keep him company.

Bolt was abandoned in an apartment all by himself…and when the owner was contacted, he decided not to redeem him. It’s no surprise Bolt has abandonment issues 😭 We hope someone out there is willing to give Bolt the life and loving forever home he deserves.

Bolt is currently in foster so please contact us at [email protected] to schedule a meet and greet with him.

UPDATE: During her spay surgery, our vet team decided to tackle her cherry eye and repaired it! She is now in recovery but is ready more than ever for a forever home — it would be so nice for her to recover in a house instead of at the shelter 🥹

We have 2 Cane Corso options: XL or future-XL

Porcia (left) is a 7-year-old gentle giant girl who knows "sit", "down", "shake" and is just overall the goodest girl ever. She's generally very calm and is basically a 100-lbs lap dog who likes to cuddle and is easy to handle. Porcia may be dog selective but since she's generally so chill we are more than happy to help with a dog intro to see if she's a good match for you.

Honeydew (right) is a young female Cane Corso puppy who is actually quite calm for such a young dog. She is always quiet and sweet in her kennel, though when she gets to go out for playtime in the puppy room, she is so much fun and enjoys playing with toys and interacting with people. We think she'd be fine meeting and living with other dogs with proper intros.

We have walk-in adoptions tomorrow between 11am-3pm. Get there early so you don't miss out on your favorite pups!

Update: ADOPTED!

We somehow ended up with a purebred Shiba Inu and he hasn’t been adopted yet! Juko is estimated to be 5 years old and is a petit little guy. Though he’s brand new, we know he loves playing with soft toys, is picky about treats (prefers biscuits over dehydrated meat), and already knew “sit” and “shake” when he arrived.

At the shelter he’s too terrified to walk so he has to get carried around but when he spent some time at a volunteer’s house we got to see his playful side come out.

Adoption fee is just $50 — come meet Juko today during walk-ins! We’re open until 3pm.

Axl had a quick day trip today and we learned he can probably live with a cat! He showed some interest but did not try to chase or bark at it — with proper intros, he’ll likely be fine coexisting with a feline friend.

Plus, this adorable senior German Shepherd is great with all people (including kids) and has gotten along well with dogs at our adoption events. His brother Slash was adopted a few weeks ago but he’s still waiting for his person to come through our doors 🥺

Email [email protected] if you’re interested in meeting Axl!

We have appointment availability between 11am-3pm tomorrow - email [email protected] to schedule.

Black kitten alert 🚨 We just got a massive influx of black and tuxedo kittens who all need homes! Historically, the black and tuxedo kitties have the hardest time getting adopted since most people seem to already have a specific color in mind (VERY common inquiries are for orange tabby, gray siamese, or calico).

When choosing to adopt a kitten, we hope you consider giving one of our black or tuxedo babies a chance 🖤

P.S. many of them will be at this Saturday’s adoption event hosted by the Davis branch Yolo County Library 📚 You can also visit our shelter between 11-4 on weekdays and 11-3 on Saturdays to meet any of our adoptable cats and kittens!

Scooby was surrendered to us in May as a euthanasia request due to his poor body condition - but after evaluation by our veterinary team, he was given a second chance at life! He was suffering from fur loss due to a maggot infestation in his back but with treatment and care he is good as new - and lost 15 lbs to get closer to a healthy weight!

This big boy is almost 100 lbs but he's such a sweetie pie who prefers short, slow walks and lots of lounging around in the grass. He's had great showings with potential adopters in the past but none of them ever came back for him 🥲 Hopefully someone decides he is this one this week and takes him home for good!

We have many appointment openings this week so just email [email protected] to grab a slot.

Bunny was adopted to a family with 2 dogs and a cat but unfortunately was not compatible with the cat 😢 She's back at the shelter and once again searching for a forever home to call her own.

Her previous adopter provided great notes to help us find the right match. She did very well with her larger dog and got along fine with the smaller dog though she did get excited every time the dog was being carried (aka she would hop up and try to grab her, something she does with her toys as well) even though she always gave the dog space otherwise. She never showed either dog any aggression. Bunny is also described as the most loving and sweet girl around every person she met.

Overall, Bunny is an easygoing 4-5 year old, 70 lbs Rottweiler. Her adoption fee is just $50 and includes her spay, vaccines, and microchip (she is already spayed!). Email us at [email protected] to schedule a meet and greet with her this week.
