๐Ÿ˜ป CUTE ADOPTION UPDATE ALERT! ๐Ÿ˜ป

This handsome black and white boy, Count Von Count, came to our shelter as a stray in June 2023. Initially, we noticed his charming personality and sweetness. โœจ He did battle a few health challenges when he first came, including a urinary tract infection (URI) and issues with his stool. However, with the right medicine, love, and time, he fully healed and was ready for adoption! ๐Ÿพ After patiently waiting six months, he FINALLY found his perfect family to welcome him in! ๐Ÿ‘ชโค๏ธ

His adopters now call him โ€œCountโ€ for short and love him so much! We just adored this sweet guy and continued to root for him to find his family while he was with us. Now, he loves to lay with his humans, cuddle in whatever spot he can find, and play with their dog! ๐Ÿ•

Count Von Count is diagnosed with FeLV which stands for Feline Leukemia Virus. It is a viral infection only contagious among cats. Cats positive for FeLV can live in a house with other cats, as long as they are also FeLV positive or received the vaccination for it. ๐Ÿ’‰ Most cats live normal lives, as long as their owners take precautions to protect from wounds, parasites, and other infections since their immune system is suppressed. ๐Ÿฆ

When asked how they are managing Countโ€™s FeLV, they said, โ€œWe did more research on it, and heโ€™s on a healthy diet with supplements to help support him. But, itโ€™s really nothing to be afraid of! Heโ€™s the same as any other healthy cat!โ€ We hope you are encouraged to not overlook adoptable cats with FeLV because they can live fulfilling lives, just like Count! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿˆ

๐Ÿฑ Understanding Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) in Cats: Breaking The Stigma Around This Diagnosis ๐Ÿฑ

FIV is often misunderstood, and we're here to break the stigma surrounding these incredible feline companions. FIV is not a death sentence; it's a manageable condition, and cats with FIV can live healthy, normal, and fulfilling lives just like any other adoptable cat. ๐Ÿกโค๏ธ

๐ŸŒŸ What is FIV?
FIV is a virus that affects a cat's immune system. However, it's essential to know that it is not easily transmitted and typically requires deep bite wounds, usually seen in unneutered male cats fighting for territory. It is not spread through casual contact like grooming, sharing food bowls, or snuggling. FIV is a feline-only virus that cannot be transmitted to humans. ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿฆ

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ Medical Care for FIV+ Cats:
Cats with FIV can thrive with proper veterinary care. Regular check-ups, a balanced diet, and a stress-free environment are key to managing their health. Many FIV+ cats have normal lifespans and can enjoy a high quality of life. Cats who test positive for FIV CAN live with FIV-negative cats with minimal risk of transmission as long as they do not fight to the point of biting. ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿก Why Adopt an FIV+ Cat?
1. Unconditional Love: FIV+ cats are just as affectionate, playful, and loving as any other cat. Their resilience and spirit are truly inspiring. ๐Ÿ’–
2. Gratitude: These cats often know they've been given a second chance, and the bond you build with them is incredibly special. ๐Ÿค—
3. Educate and Advocate: By adopting an FIV+ cat, you're not just changing one lifeโ€”you're helping break stereotypes and educating others about the realities of FIV. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“š

We invite you to consider adoption, and when you are browsing adoptable cats, donโ€™t be quick to overlook those with an FIV diagnosis. It does not have to be scary; in fact, it is very manageable with the proper knowledge. Browse the photos in this post of our AVAILABLE CATS living with FIV.

YOU can help be the solution and be an advocate for FIV+ cats! To view all available cats, visit our website here --> https://ycspca.org/adopt/available-cats.html

Happy Monday from adoptable Kane!
Cute as a button and quite the sweetheart, 13 lb Kane is a super energetic dude who is sure to bring some fun-loving shenanigans into your life.

Active and adventure-loving, Kane's ideal family will be committed to daily exercise and ongoing training to keep him focused and happy. Guesstimated to be only about 4-5 years young, Kane is a food-motivated guy who loves making new friends. We don't know how he feels about living with other animals or kids and do ask that all prospective homes bring their current dogs and children in for a supervised meet and greet to best ensure a good match is made. For any homes bringing in a new furry addition, we always recommend ongoing supervision and slow, safe incorporation

We would like to introduce you to Alice, an adorable pittie living with diabetes in one of our foster homes! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ  Just like Max the Cat, Alice requires additional monitoring and care, but is worth it since she is a wonderful companion. ๐Ÿ’•

Alice is estimated to be four years old, and she came to us as a stray in August. She, too, is a long-term resident who has patiently been waiting for her forever home. โœจ Our veterinary team discovered she was diabetic after noticing she was drinking and urinating more than normal. We sent her to foster while we started her on insulin. After diligent work by her foster mom and blood work re-checks, we have found an insulin dose that she seems to do very well on. ๐Ÿ’‰๐ŸŽ

Alice will most likely require insulin the rest of her life and occasional blood checks with a regular veterinarian. ๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ Although her cost of care is more than some non-diabetic animals, it should not discourage you from meeting her! The price of a bottle of her insulin is $25 and it lasts her a couple months.

Here is a message from her foster mom ๐Ÿฅฐ:

โ€œWe are thoroughly enjoying fostering Alice!! She is such a good dog. ๐Ÿ• Patient with our cats and almost mothering of them when they give her the chance. ๐Ÿฑ She LOVES to be around people! Many times, she wants to lay right next to us in the chairs or couch. She always wants to sleep in bed and snuggles in between the humans. ๐Ÿ˜ด She will attach you with kisses ๐Ÿ’‹ and cries at the dogs on the TV. I think she believes they are trapped in the box. ๐Ÿ“บ She is just an all-around sweetheart! She could definitely be a great candidate for an emotional support dog. โค๏ธโ€

We cannot thank her foster family enough for spoiling her with lots of love and the care she deserves. They take her on daily walks and cut up veggies to give her for yummy treats! She especially loves her carrot chips! ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿฅ• If you would like to apply to meet Miss Alice for yourself, click HERE to submit an application --> https://buff.ly/48okKbz

TGIF from adoptable Sully!
At about 7 years young, Sully is a gorgeous red and white Husky boy who's looking for a new home to call his own.

Sully loves going for walks and is quite the fan of hot dogs! In typical Husky fashion, Sully can be a little noisy at times. We don't know how he feels about living with other animals or kids and do ask that all prospective homes bring their current dogs and children in for a supervised meet and greet to best ensure a good match is made. For any homes bringing in a new furry addition, we always recommend ongoing supervision and slow, safe incorporation.

If you love Huskies and can give this senior boy the family he longs for in his golden years, please go to: https://ycspca.org/adopt/available-dogs.html &page=shelterluv_wrap_1674658629186%2Fembed%2Fanimal%2FYORK-A-8927

๐Ÿšจ Our dog kennel is completely FULL, and we need YOUR help! ๐Ÿšจ

We are currently at capacity for dogs. ๐Ÿถโ€ผ๏ธ Even in January, stray dogs are pouring into our shelter every day and we need YOUR help now!

You may remember our kennel was at capacity mid-November, but, unfortunately, due to the record number of stray dogs we continue to take in, we have reached capacity againโ€ฆ Hereโ€™s how YOU can help our dogs! ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿค

1๏ธโƒฃ FOSTER! Fostering saves two lives - the animal you take home and one we now have space for in our kennel. Our canine foster and rescue coordinator will work with you every step to ensure you are confident in welcoming a pup into your home as a stepping stone to finding their forever home, including an initial meet and greet. The York County SPCA supplies you with all the necessary items, including a crate, toys, a bed, food, leashes, collars, and more. We also take full financial responsibility for every foster dog, including medical treatment. Submit a foster application HERE -> https://ycspca.org/get-involved/foster-program.html

2๏ธโƒฃ ADOPT! If you are in the position to adopt and want to add a new furry family member, we have amazing dogs waiting to find their forever homes. Visit during our public browsing hours every Tues, Wed, Thurs, and Sat from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Click here to view all AVAILABLE DOGS -> https://ycspca.org/adopt/available-dogs.html and submit an adoption application.

3๏ธโƒฃ SHARE! Please share THIS post and our posts about stray animals, adoptable dogs, and fostering to help spread the word for others to help! You never know if sharing a homeless animal may be what reunites them with their owner, opening a kennel for another dog in need.

4๏ธโƒฃ DONATE! Consider making a monetary donation to help us care for York County pets. We also need donations of large and extra-large dog crates, towels, blankets, and dog treats (Milk Bones and soft treats). Our pups greatly appreciate each item. For a complete list of wish list items, click HERE -> https://ycspca.org/get-involved/wish-list.html

It takes a community to come together to help care for our animals. Thank you for your unwavering support of our mission. ๐Ÿ’™โœจ

๐Ÿ“ฑ OUR NEW INTERACTIVE KENNEL CARDS! ๐Ÿ“ฑ

โœ๏ธ Read our newest blog article HERE --> https://buff.ly/4aJJvAI

For those who have recently visited our shelter over the past ten months since we finalized our renovations, you've noticed an upgrade to our kennel cards. We previously used a printed index card with only basic information listed on it, such as their name, age, s*x, and breed. ๐Ÿ“„ There was no way for potential adopters to know about their personality. We are so excited to finally publish an article about the "Shelter Scan" interactive kennel cards we use NOW, thanks to a generous grant from the PEDIGREE Foundation. ๐Ÿพ

Now, you can scan the QR code on an animal's kennel card and see their bio, photos, and videos to learn what they would be like outside of the shelter! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ“ท Not only is this beneficial to the York County SPCA, but it can also be adopted by other animal shelters and rescue organizations, regardless of their size or how robust a digital interface they utilize. ๐Ÿ’ป

If you are an animal shelter or organization interested in learning more about or adopting our model, please email us at ๐Ÿ“ฉ [email protected].

We would like to introduce you to three sibling kitties: Felix, Milo, & Shadow! ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿพ

**Check out more videos in the comments โฌ‡ **

These kitties came to us mid-October as an owner surrender. In their previous home, they were outdoor cats. ๐Ÿ ๐ŸŒณ Due to how scared and timid they were when they arrived, our team originally wanted to Shelter-Neuter-Return them to find an outdoor placement again, however, they could not return to the location they came from. This is why they received their ear tipping ๐Ÿ‘‚, a universal indicator that community cats have been neutered/spayed and received their rabies vaccines. ๐Ÿ’‰

We placed them into a cat condo to decompress and come out of their shells. ๐Ÿš Our feline team has been working with them each week to socialize them and gain their trust through positive association with playtime ๐Ÿงถ and mealtime ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ. During their meals, our staff goes in to pet them while they eat or give them food by hand. They are also present through playtime in which they use wand toys. They LOVE the wand toys and jump super high in the air to catch them. This strategic training is helping them to come up during mealtime and rub up against staff, as well as enjoy pets. ๐Ÿฅฐ They have made tremendous progress, but they still can be hesitant when their face or head is approached for touch. โœ‹

We are hoping to find a home who is comfortable working with them to see their full potential and personalities blossom over time. ๐ŸŒธ Since they lived in an outdoor setting previously, we think they could benefit from an indoor/outdoor home. Just a stable, quiet place to live to provide routine. ๐Ÿ•™

They are wonderful cats and very affectionate with each other โ€“ they cuddle, groom, and play with one another all the time. ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฑ They do not all have to be adopted together, as we believe they can be slowly introduced to other cats in the home. They honestly keep each other very busy if they have toys, playing and finding entertainment in toys in their condo. We do, however, think they should be placed without small children in fear this may hinder the progress theyโ€™ve made. ๐Ÿง’๐Ÿšซ Small children approaching them and touching them in places they are not comfortable with yet may scare them and cause them to retreat.

So, if you are someone searching for a quiet companion who would bond with you over time and unlock their full potential, consider applying for Felix, Milo, or Shadow! ๐Ÿ’•โœจ Felix (grey) and Milo (black) are male. Shadow (black) is a female.

โ€ผ๏ธ We are seeking donations of large or extra-large dog crates for dogs receiving medical attention. โ€ผ๏ธ

Jovie has an important message for everyone: Our veterinary wing has limited space for animals undergoing medical treatment. Unfortunately, many crates they rely on daily have become broken and unusable. These are vital tools for our veterinary team as they observe and care for shelter pets. ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿฉบ

๐Ÿ“ Please drop off new or lightly used crates in the designated donation bins outside the front entrance of our shelter Monday โ€“ Sunday from 8:00 a.m. โ€“ 4:00 p.m.

Note: Jovie is currently in foster care and is not available for adoption yet. She spent many days in our veterinary wing receiving vital care, greeting everyone who passed her crate when you immediately came in. ๐Ÿ˜Š

TGIF from adoptable Dracula! ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿค
Currently living in one of our PAWsome foster homes, Dracula - better known as Drake, Drako and Draky - is adjusting very well and making himself right at home!

Drake has already made great progress with housebreaking and crate-training in his foster home. He even takes treats gently, LOVES playing with toys and is doing very well with his doggie foster siblings. Drake may do best with another dog to play with and help guide him in his furever home. Guesstimated to be under 2 years old, Drake is a young and energetic dude who's ready for some fun and adventure. This handsome hunk's ideal home will be committed to daily exercise, manners training and ongoing socialization to help him feel safe and loved. Super smart and absolutely adorable - Drako will surely continue to make great progress with the right family!

A sweetheart who longs to feel loved, Dracula is ready to finally have a family of his very own. Please consider opening your heart to him. We do ask that all prospective homes bring their current dogs and children in for a supervised meet and greet to best ensure a good match is made. For any homes bringing in a new furry addition, we always recommend ongoing supervision and slow, safe incorporation.

Meet Buddy, the ultimate adventurer with a heart of gold! ๐Ÿ’›

This outgoing boy loves...

๐Ÿ’ค Lap time and rubbing all over you

๐Ÿž๏ธ Exploring

๐Ÿงถ Playing with toys

๐ŸŸ Eating

We are seeking a specific home for Buddy ๐Ÿ  - an indoor home that could potentially provide safe outdoor time, as we think he'd enjoy the stimulation. Buddy was originally in our Working Cat Program, however, as our staff have worked with him, he's become very sweet toward us and been socialized to humans. ๐Ÿฑ He still has an independent nature to him though, so this is why we believe he would best thrive in a home with indoor and outdoor accommodations. ๐ŸŒฒ And don't worry! Buddy is housetrained and uses the litter box inside. ๐Ÿšฝ

Super duper stud muffin alert! Long-term kennel resident Biggy is not only handsome, but he also has a super sweet personality to match! A big head and even bigger heart, this boy is sure to bring some sunshine into your life.

Guesstimated to be maybe 3 years old, Biggy boy loves snacking, cuddling and sneaking in kisses any chance he gets. A strong boy, Biggy could use some work on his basic manners as he does pull on lead at times. Smart and eager to please, Biggy will surely make great progress in no time though with some consistent exercise and training. Biggy boy is looking for a home where he can be the only dog.

We don't have any background information on how he feels about living with kids and do ask that all prospective homes bring their children in for a supervised meet and greet to best ensure a good match is made. For any homes bringing in a new furry addition, we always recommend ongoing supervision and slow, safe incorporation.

For those who remember our favorite mother and son duo, Rachel and Aaron - they were happily adopted by a wonderful couple at the beginning of November. ๐Ÿ˜ธ Now, they've had almost two months to settle in, and we are so happy to say they are thriving in their forever home! ๐Ÿ โœจ Oh, and they are definitely spoiled (which they deserve)! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Their adopter reports, "Theyโ€™re doing great! Rachel is warming up and getting on our laps now. Sheโ€™s also crazy in love with the cat tower now that we put some kitty stairs to help her up. ๐Ÿฐ Sheโ€™s super playful and will run around chasing the one string toy we have. ๐Ÿงถ

Aaron is getting comfortable but still very skittish. Heโ€™s still on anxiety meds to help but has been more interactive with us. He really enjoys being on the top of the couch watching us. ๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ๐Ÿ‘€ Heโ€™s also become our alarm clock by purring as loud as possible and constantly pawing at us for breakfast in the morning. โฐ Aaron also loves the same string toy that Rachel plays with and will chase it between rooms."

Check out the photos to put a smile on your face! ๐Ÿ˜Š Thank you for adopting these love bugs! โค๏ธ

Merry Christmas and happy holidays from our adoptable girl Sweet Potato! True to her name, Sweet Potato has a sweet, loving disposition and is ready to settle in with a PAWsome, furever family.

Initially a little nervous and reserved with new people, Sweet Potato's ideal home will be committed to ongoing socialization to boost her confidence and help her feel safe and loved. We just know this super food-motivated girl will make a great addition to the right family.

We don't have any background information on how she feels about living with other animals or kids and do ask that all prospective homes bring their current dogs and children in for a supervised meet and greet to best ensure a good match is made. For any homes bringing in a new furry addition, we always recommend ongoing supervision and slow, safe incorporation.
