If you have a dog, you should know about foxtails (aka “grass awns”). In the spring and summer, they thrive in fields and along roadsides and hiking trails across much of the US. Foxtails can lodge into your dog’s ears, paws, and nose—causing discomfort and leading to infections if they aren’t removed. Learning to spot these spiky grasses and how to check your dog from nose to tail can go far in preventing injuries. If you find a foxtail and can’t remove it, take your pet to the closest urgent or emergency care vet for removal and follow-up care.

that xylitol (aka birch or wood sugar) a common sweetener found in sugar-free gum, candies, and some peanut butter brands, is toxic to pets, especially dogs? Eating even a small amount of xylitol can cause a sudden release of insulin in dogs, leading to low blood sugar, seizures, and even liver failure. Keep your pets safe by double-checking ingredient labels and avoiding feeding them human snacks and desserts. If you suspect your dog has ingested a sugar substitute, take them to an emergency vet ASAP.

Happy Fourth of July!

Dogs and cats have a much higher sense of hearing than us humans do. While we may hear fireworks as musical pops, our pets experience them with much higher intensity. 💥

As with thunder and lightning, the loud booms and flashes of fireworks are very unpredictable, causing confusion and fear for pets. Cats and dogs cannot understand what is happening when they hear fireworks which instinctually triggers their fight-or-flight response to unknown threats.

Here are some ways to prepare and comfort you pet during summer fireworks displays: https://www.thrivepetcare.com/thrive-guide/how-to-calm-pets-during-fireworks

As the Fourth of July approaches, you may be considering lighting some celebratory fireworks for the occasion. Though fireworks may be a fun tradition for us, your four-legged friends may feel differently. Read our tips for keeping your pet safe this Independence Day.

The fourth of July is near and what better way to celebrate than with fireworks and sparklers. Although it may not be expected, dogs will chew on and eat fireworks and may become anxious due to the unexpected, loud sound. When ingested dogs can have GI upset, obstruction, and even damage to their red blood cells. It’s best to keep your furry friends inside while enjoying the pyrotechnics!

With the temperatures on the rise, it’s important to keep an eye on our pets, as cats and dogs are highly susceptible to heat related emergencies. 🌡️

Some warning signs to watch for:
🔥Excessive panting
🔥Collapsing or inability to get up
🔥Vomiting after drinking
🔥Dark red gums
🔥Sudden lethargy

In addition to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, be aware of the dangers of burned paw pads from walking on hot pavement or venturing onto rough trails without prior conditioning. These injuries may result in weeks of bandaging, pain management, and potential permanent scars. If you pet has burned paw pads or is showing any symptoms of or , seek urgent care ASAP
