Not many people look at this happy face and know he spent 2,920 days outside in the Texas heat, with some scraps of food here and there (if he was lucky to get anything at all), being prone to so many dangers.
He wears his smile proudly after spending at least 730 of those days with a mass growing on the side of his face. The mass ended up weighing 3.5lbs once it was removed - but for nearly two years, he had to lug around a second head. The mass became severely infected and would actively bleed. The day he was rescued, he had a PCV of 6%. He was dying and wouldn’t have made it another day.
Behind this smile is a dog who endured cruelty at the hands of a human. Someone looked at him in desperate need of help and proceeded to shoot him through his mass. The bullet is still lodged in his left cheek. Perhaps they tried to end his suffering, but it was a failed attempt and only added to his life of being miserable.
But the unfairness didn’t stop there. Life had to throw two more things his way to try and break him; lymphoma and carcinoma. But Bear was happy and content through his treatments of chemotherapy all the way up until he reached remission. How could a dog go through all of this and still find it in himself to be happy and love life?
Bear, you are the face of hope. It’s been so wonderful to learn from you. ❤️
