Miss Maggie May's Rescue

Miss Maggie May's Rescue We are an all volunteer foster home based rescue group. We provide medical care, spay/neuter and vaccinations to the dogs in our care
(8)

Back in 2012, we saw a need for a rescue that was devoted to puppies, pregnant dogs, and families; and formed Miss Maggie May's Rescue. The rescue was named after the first foster we took in under a different rescue. Maggie was only 35 pounds (her ideal weight should of been 60 pounds), within 12 hours of being with us, she gave birth to 11 pups with only 5 surviving. We ended up adopting Maggie

and she was with us until 2021 (11 years). Over the course of the years we have shifted to bringing in dogs of all ages and sizes from shelters, and owner surrenders (to keep them out of the shelters). We are an 100% volunteer organization, and all donations go towards taking in these homeless dogs (as room in private foster homes permit), giving them love, any needed medical, training, and finding them new homes. All dogs and puppies are micro chipped, spay/neuter, and current on core vaccinations at time of adoption. Adoption fees alone does not cover the costs of food, medical and supplies that these puppies and dogs need so they can shine in their new homes. Donations (we are a 501c3) and Foster Homes are important parts of the equation in order to keep the rescue running and open.

Whose nose and big ears are sticking out from under their bed? It's Darby!! About a week ago he started turning his bed over and sleeping under it. One day he was playing with the bed and fell asleep under it. I guess he enjoyed it so much he now sleeps under it all the time. He does have a small blanket he can go under, but nope it has to be his bed. Darby has been on crate rest for the last 5 weeks. His xray last week shows that his bone is almost healed. He is now able to walk around more, while on leash at his pace. His Vet was pleased at how well he is walking, his leg is straight when he walks. 3 more weeks until his next xray. Darby is still his friendly go happy self.

We want to give a huge Thank You to all that stopped by our table, Sunday at Fry"s and learned a little more about the rescue. And of course Thank you for those that donated and purchased a few items on the table. This is the first time we did an event like this in our 11 years of operating. It was fun, got to talk to many wonderful pet owners and share our story. THANK YOU Everyone for a successful event!

Darby is home from having surgery yesterday. His Vet was happy with how it went. Darby can only go outside on leash for the next 4 to 6 weeks. He will be spending most of his time in his crate. We need to make sure there is no running, jumping, wrestling basically no force on that leg. We were given a physical therapy exercise for his leg, if he allows it. He can walk on it if he can tolerate it. Right now he holds it up even when he is sitting. He has done a few toe touches with it and did a little standing on it and the foot was facing forward and not sideways. Tomorrow we will transfer him to the next size crate and keep an eye on him to make sure it's not to big for his recovery. Darby is hanging out in the office to keep him calm and not be tempted to jump in the crate. Darby still has a long road ahead of him and he is being his usual calm and kick backed kinda pup. We want to thank those that have donated towards his care, but we are still in need of donations, this has taken a huge toll on what little funds we had, and we still need to take care of those in the rescue, not to mention all the follow up care Darby needs.

Darby needs our help!!!!
Darby is a little sleepy in this picture. We were picking him up from being sedated in order to get some more (his 3rd set) xrays.

He will be going in for surgery Tuesday.

His growth plate is closed so the small bone in his right leg has stopped growing, while the larger bone is still growing His smaller bone does not even go to his foot. This is causing his big bone to twist around near his ankle and is bowing out his elbow. His foot shakes when he walks because he is stretching those ligaments and his foot is turning under and out. If this continues it will start causing him pain. He is getting to the age where there is going to be more rapid growth of his bones.
Today he had more xrays done to take a look at his joint at the elbow and to get a different view of the leg overall, they also checked to see if his left leg may become an issue and it looks ok. The joint has a large enough gap which is good, so he can have an intervention now. The goal is to relieve the added pressure of that big bone twisting and using mechanics to help get the leg aligned better. He will have check ups until he has stopped growing and then we will know if he will need another surgery then.
Darby will have to be on leash for the duration, no wrestling, running, jumping but lots of walking which will be good for him.
So far with all the visits we are $1,100.00 in.
In the last 2 months we have had some major bills, Cleo with some severe allergies her bill was $555.00 and she may need follow up injections. Patches had a gastro issue to the tune of $850.00. We are a small rescue still recovering from the high medical bills from 2022.
We depend on not only adoptions but donations to keep our doors open. We have been able to keep them open for the last 11 and a half years, and we were only able to do that with the support we have received over the years.
Darby's surgery is going to cost about $4,000.00 any amount is greatly appreciated, because in the end it all adds up.

Darby is a sweet cuddly pup, that came out of PACC with his 3 siblings, currently he is having to stop and rest more often then his siblings.

Please share and help get the word out Darby needs our help!

SPECIAL NEEDS ALERT!!!

5/14 Update: Darby had more x-rays done to get a better look at the leg. His growth plate has a partial early closure, the other bone is still growing. So he has an Angular Limb Deformity. The rotation of his leg isn't good at this point and the x-ray showed a possible issue with his foot because of how he is walking on it right now. He does have an appointment next week with an Orthopedic Vet so we can see what next steps are. We could really use some help with his care.

Darby is 5 months old and still learning his puppy basics
He loves to do all the puppy stuff and hasn't let his right leg slow him down.
X-rays were done and it looks like one of his bones is growing faster then the other causing the bow and curve in his leg.
Darby has another appointment for a consultation next week to see if there is anything we can do for him now and his options.
Chances are he will have to wait until he is full grown (another 7 months) before he can have surgery to correct his leg. We will know more after his visit.

We are setting up a Darby Fund to help pay for his vet visits (as of 5/14/24 $593) and the future expenses. As many of you know surgery on a leg is expensive, and we would like to get a jump start on that expense.

We still have Jim Click Raffle Tickets available for a chance to win a 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe here's the link to purchase tickets

Adopted!!!!!
To my future forever family. My name is Jackson. I’m a 1 year old sweet, little, fun spirited Poodle/Maltese mix that’s ready to bring love and laughter into your life. Whether I’m running around the yard with my foster furry friends, playing with my toys , or snuggling up for a nap, I do it with enthusiasm and affection. I’m still learning , so I’ll need some patience, guidance and positive reinforcement. I’ve learned how to use the doggie door and sit for treats. If you’re ready to welcome a sweet , little guy into your home , then fill out the application at missmaggiemays.org.

Available for Adoption!!!!!!

Patches the 11 month soon to be 1 year old Yorkie.

Patches is a bundle of energy, she just doesn't know which direction to go most of the time. Patches is very curious and needs to know what is going on. She loves her people, gets along with other dogs, is crate trained and walks on leash but can get distracted.

Patches is still learning some the puppy basics, she didn't learn when she was younger. In her foster home she is starting to use the doggie door, but still has more work when it comes to housebreaking.

Patches will need a home full of energy, that will continue to work with her on the things she should already know. As well as having patience and loads of love.

When it comes to children she would do better in a hone with older considerate children.

Patches adoption fee includes her spay, microchip and vaccinations.

Arizona Gives Day

Daisy in the front and Delia in the back. They have been with Miss Maggie May's Rescue for about 2 years now. They came from a hoarding case and are slowly coming around. Daisy is great with all the dogs, big and small and loves to play and jump. Right now she is getting slow intros to being outside in the front of the house, she is ok in the backyard. Delia is finally coming around and is seeking attention and is starting to cuddle with the male human in her home Delia gets long with the dogs in her foster home. She still is not sure about women. Here at Miss Maggie May's Rescue, they will stay with us, until they are ready to go face the outside world, no matter how long that takes.
Because of your support and donations we are able to furnish what they need while they learn about the outside world.

Arizona Gives Day
This is Stitch he came into rescue with his 2 brothers from the county shelter. Stitch was ready to ditch the Tucson heat and head out to Baltimore. His adopter had some business in Tucson and flew in. On the way home they got hung up at the Denver airport for about 30 hours. He did great. This is the 2nd dog she adopted from us to become a service dog. We get regular updates on him. Stitch did need a little extra vetting and a certificate to fly, this would not of been possible without your support and donations.

Arizona Gives Day we are starting to go into the Golden hours.

Zelda was one of those dogs that was with us for many years. She showed up at the county shelter so pregnant she couldn't walk and so scared of her own shadow. Her foster had only 3 days to work with her before she gave birth and was able to run away from all human interaction. Zelda was a great mom and all her puppies found great homes. Zelda was allowed free range of her foster home, but she never ventured out of the back bedroom, she would run and get in her covered crate, even a glass of water used to fill her water bowl would cause her to run. She started coming around very slowly, we found a great trainer and she was in board and train for a month. When she came back she was ok being in a pen in the living room and soon she was fine being outside of the pen. She started going outside with the other dogs, but she did adopt the space under the coffee table as hers. Some of the older dogs also joined her in her "cave". A little over a year ago everything changed for Zelda, she was rushed to the ER vet at midnight and was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease. For the next year she would have many blood draws and was on expensive monthly medications. Almost a year to the date when she was first diagnosed she took another nose dive, with yet another auto immune disease, her quality of life was slipping away and sadly we lost her.
Without your support and donations , we would not of been able to help Zelda.

Arizona Gives Day Power Hour 3pm to 3:59pm

Help us win $2,000 with the most unique donations over $50.00

Meet 15 year old Mr. Fluffy. Yes, 15 years old and an owner surrender to the county shelter because they were moving. We had arrived at the shelter to pick up a litter of puppies when we saw him in the parking lot heading towards intake.
When the rescue coordinator went back to get the pups, she saw him sitting in a crate on the cart waiting to be wheeled into one of the noisy shelter kennels. She came out and got me and he is now with Miss Maggie May's Rescue.
Mr. Fluffy is almost completely blind, and he mostly sees shadows, which sometimes can be scary to him. He also has been a picky eater. His foster home has found a safe place for him in their home as well as finally figuring out that all it took to get him to eat was his food being on a plate and not in a bowl. He does get a little defensive with large close shadows, and the one dog that he will most likely encounter has learned to give him is space. Mr. Fluffy has some issues that are on watch right now, so he will need further medical care in the future. Mr. Fluffy will most likely spend the rest of his years in the care of Miss Maggie May's Rescue, that is where your donations come in. Adoptions fees alone do not cover the expenses of any rescue. Rescues like ours depend on your kind donations to care for dogs like Mr. Fluffy.
