NURTURE YOUR HORSE'S WELL-BEING WITH A FIBRE-RICH DIET

Fiber is a crucial component that helps maintain a healthy gut environment, thereby reducing the risk of colic and other digestive issues. A fiber-rich diet can help maintain a healthy weight by promoting satiety and preventing overeating. Additionally, it provides a slow-release energy source, keeping your horse fueled throughout the day without causing spikes or crashes.

Protein Feeds Horse Feed is available in 40 kg from select stores in Gauteng and North West.

🧐 DID YOU KNOW?
We have a LEISURE RANGE. Not a Leisure ration.

Inside our blue leisure (colour coded bag) we have 5 different rations.
▶Nice n Easy cubes
▶ Cool Rider cubes
▶ Rider pellets
▶ Super Rider meal
▶ Train n Leisure cubes

We have 3 of these rations a cube form:
Nice n Easy
Cool Rider
Train n Leisure

Higher in fibre needing a bigger size to accommodate.🙂

Rider pellets in a pellet size.

Super Rider meal to accommodate those clients and horses preferring a meal.💟

Always remember to read your bag tag and retain the tag safely until your horses have finished the feed. The bag tag will tell you which product is in the Leisure bag and give you valuable information on manufacture dates and batch numbers.

We have full traceability of the feed through the bag tag and have retention samples in the mill for your safe keeping. A full analysis with a batch report is in our keeping to also assist should anything come up once the feed is in the market.

REMEMBER your horse's safety is our first concern.

🧐WHAT DO ELECTROLYTES DO?
Your cells use electrolytes to conduct electrical charges, which is how your muscles contract. Those same electrical charges also help with chemical reactions, especially hydration and the balance of fluids inside and outside of cells.
The key principle that electrolytes rely on is that certain chemical elements can naturally hold a positive or negative electrical charge. When these elements are dissolved in liquid they can conduct electricity.
At the most basic level electrolytes help your horse's body maintain balance.

✅SODIUM (+) has a critical role in helping cells maintain the right balance of fluids. The positive ion found in salt.
✅ MAGNESIUM (+) helps your horse's cells as they turn nutrients into energy. The brain and muscles rely heavily on magnesium to do their job.
✅ POTASSIUM (+) is used alongside sodium. When a sodium ion enters a cell, a potassium ion leaves and vice versa. Potassium is critical to your horse's heart function. This electrolyte is found in good quality forages.
✅ CALCIUM (+) this electrolyte does more than just build strong bones and teeth in your horse. It is used to control muscles, transmit signals in your nerves and manage the heart's rhythm.
✅ CHORIDE (-) this negative found in salt is the key part in assisting your horses maintain their internal and external balance of fluids.
✅ PHOSPHATE (-) a phosphorous based molecule that transports chemical compounds and molecules outside your horse's cells. Assisting with metabolizing nutrients efficiently in the cells.
As you can see electrolytes are vital in your horse's diet and when under show or performance pressure it is always a good idea to supplement and replace electrolytes lost due to heavy sweating and stress.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD HORSES EAT? Ideally, horses should eat small meals throughout the day to mimic their natural grazing behavior and help maintain optimal digestive health. Leaving a horse without forage for extended periods can actually lead to several health issues.
Horses produce stomach acid continuously, and without hay to buffer it, ulcers can develop. Their small stomachs quickly process food, making consistent forage essential. Additionally, boredom and frustration from insufficient forage can result in destructive behaviors like wood chewing or cribbing.

14/08/2024

Forage extenders are high-fibre cubes to help replace a portion of the forage in your horse's diet. They are not fortified with vitamins and minerals - just pure forage.

They are made up of a variety of hays designed to increase the quality and quantity of forage in your horse's diet when grazing is short and the quality of actual hay in your area is poor. We do not wish to replace a horse's natural inclination to graze all day with these cubes, but merely to increase the quality of forage received.

Advised to dampen or soak for those horses prone to choke on dry feed. Never allow your horse to become so hungry that they gulp their food down, which also increases the risk of choke.

As hindgut fermenters with small stomachs they eat at least 22 of their 24 hours a day. Our involvement in horses have created a change in their natural habitat and habits, resulting in longer periods without food. This increases the risk of ulcers and negative behaviour traits such as crib biting, wind sucking and weaving.
Roughage cubes are great for the following:
✅ Older horses with poor teeth quality. The cubes have milled forage in them and it makes it easier for the older horse to receive his daily roughage requirement.
✅ Horses with allergies that struggle when inhaling the dust of hay.
✅ They assist with maintaining a healthy intestinal microbiome in the hindgut so vital for equine health.
✅ Increasing the overall quality of roughage consumed in a day when the hay quality available is not good.
✅ Assisting horses that are sensitive to starch and sugar resulting in negative behaviour. Supplementing with our roughage cubes and lowering concentrates which contain grain will assist with a more 'even' temperament.
✅ Excellent to be fed alone with a balancer to horses that do not need a higher energy concentrate while still achieving excellent body condition.
✅ Great for post surgery and box rest to keep the gut healthy and maintain body condition.
Contact our specialist equine advisors to assist with choosing the right hay extender on offer to suite your individual requirements.

👀Managing a horse on box rest can be a challenging and stressful time for both horse and owner.
🐎Horses will generally need to be kept on box rest when they are suffering from an injury/lameness, laminitis, recovering from surgery, tying up or a they have a severe virus.
🤓As we know, changes to a horse’s diet should normally be made gradually – however when box rest is required, it is usually the case that it is needed to be done straight away. The biggest concern then for our horse’s health, is often feeding too much or the wrong type of feed, which can lead to complications.
🌾Ideally we need to reduce or remove all cereal-based feeds from the diet straight away and increase the amount of fibre that is being fed is. Feeding plenty of fibre is important to promote healthy, normal gut function, and unless the horse is overweight, ad lib hay is ideal.
🐴As mentioned above, box rest can be very stressful for our horse, they are used to being outside and moving around. This can often lead to a drop in appetite, which can add to the complexity of keeping them healthy and happy during their box rest – feeding a variety of different types of fibre can encourage the horse to exhibit more of their natural browsing behaviour, thereby helping to ensure they consume enough fibre to keep the gut working normally. Epol’s Essential Roughage, Premium Roughage and Lucerne cubes can be great add ins.
🤔For poorer doers, box rest provides the challenge of how to supply “calories” without increasing the risk of digestive upsets. Cereal free rations that are high in fibre and fat can be a great option – Epol’s Nice ‘n Easy, Train ‘n Leisure, Safe ‘n Lite and Cool ‘n Perform will all work well in these cases.
📋Vitamins and minerals are vital components of tissues, antioxidants and other parts of the immune system - they are therefore vital for effective repair and recovery whilst on box rest. Epol’s High Performance and Low Calorie Balancers are an excellent way of ensuring your horse is getting the important nutrients required to heal and recover.
💦And finally…… Water!
Having clean fresh water available at all times is vitally important to ensure that your horse remains hydrated whilst in box rest and avoids the risk of colic.
📲If you have a horse that has recently gone into box rest, or is due to go into box rest, and are unsure about how to manage their diet – please don’t hesitate to contact one of Equine Specialist Nutritional Advisors and they will assist you.

💧💧Water consumption during winter is vitally important for your horses overall health as well as to avoid issues such as an impaction colic.
❄Horses are not always that keen to drink as much water as they should during the colder months which can be a concern.

🤓Here are some ideas to keep your horse hydrated this winter:
• Some studies show that horses will more readily drink warmer water in the colder months. Try adding a small amount of hot water into your horses bucket of cold water, this will bring the overall temp of the bucket up and encourage your horse to drink more. ♨
• Add water to your horse’s feeds. Experiment with the amount as some horses will be happy to “drink” their soupy meals and then eat the wet feed after.
• Some horses do this of their own accord, but you may find that dropping some of your horse’s feed/hay into his water tub flavours it, encouraging drinking.
• Apple juice may also work to encourage drinking in the winter. If you decide to play around with flavouring your horse’s water, make sure he has flavoured water AND regular water to choose from. This trick also works when traveling and at horse shows.🍎
• Providing Salt each day helps stimulate thirst and thus water consumption, and it's so important to ensure your horse gets enough salt each day. 🧂
• Always ensure that water is always easily accessible and is fresh and clean.
