To teach your dog to walk on a loose leash.

You will need:

- A collar or harness
- A leash
- Treats

To start:

1. Fill your pocket or treat pouch with treats.

2. Decide what side youโ€™d like the dog to walk on, and hold a few treats on that side of your body. For example, if youโ€™d like your dog to walk on the left side, hold treats in your left hand.

3. Hold your leash in the hand opposite the dog. For example, if your dog is on your left, hold the end of the leash in your right hand. Let the rest of it hang loosely in a โ€œJโ€.

4. Take a step, then stop. Itโ€™s okay if the dog doesnโ€™t stay in โ€œheelโ€ position. Feed the dog some treats from your hand, in line with the seam of your pants. This will help you position the dog.

5. Repeat. Take step, stop, feed a treat at your side, along the seam of your pants.

6. When the dog is looking eagerly up at you for more treats, take two steps instead of one before stopping and feeding the dog.

7. If the dog pulls ahead, stop walking immediately. Call your dog back to you, or use the treats in your hand to lure the dog back to your side, but don't treat her yet: take two to three steps forward before feeding. This is to prevent teaching a sequence like: โ€œI pull ahead, I come back, I eat.โ€ We want them to learn that walking alongside you on a loose leash makes treats happen, not pulling.

8. Gradually take more steps between each treat. You can talk to your dog to help keep her attention on you.

9. When the dog walks well on a loose leash, give this kind of walk a name. It could be โ€œheel,โ€ โ€œwith me,โ€ โ€œletโ€™s walk,โ€ or another word/phrase of your choice.

10. Release your dog (โ€œall done,โ€ โ€œokay,โ€ โ€œthatโ€™ll do,โ€ etc.) when they no longer need to walk in โ€œheelโ€ position.

If you have a busy schedule, our dog walkers can help get your dog the regular exercise they need.

Get in touch with us today to discuss your options.

Classic games like โ€˜fetchโ€™ are lots of fun for you and your dog, but exercise isnโ€™t just about running around. Mental exercise is important too, as it can help fight boredom and teach your dog great new skills.

Here are 5 of the more common brain games for dogs.

1. Treasure hunt
This is a great brain game to test your dogโ€™s thinking skills! Hide pieces of your dogโ€™s favourite treat around the house (or if itโ€™s nice outside, the garden) and let them hunt for a tasty reward. Your dog will have to use their nose to scent out the prize.

2. Brain training toys
A really simple brain game for dogs involves hiding treats inside a special toy. There are many toys you can buy for this purpose โ€“ just put some of your dogโ€™s favourite treat inside, and watch them try to release it.

3. Learn a trick or two
Teaching your dog a trick or two is a great way to spend quality time with them and get their brain working. Teach them to recognise objects, fetch your slippers or roll over on command.

4. Three cups
This game is great for encouraging your dog to pay attention to you. All you need is three cups and a treat, such as a piece of treat.

Before starting the dog brain game, make sure each of the cups smells like treat; a good way to do this is to simply wipe the treat around the inside rim of each cup. Then, with your dog watching you, place the treat under one of the upturned cups, and place the other upturned cups next to it.

5. Advanced brain game for dogs - independent thinking
This advanced dog brain game encourages independent thinking as your dog is rewarded for trying new โ€˜tricksโ€™ that they have come up with themselves. This is a great way to encourage their inventiveness.

If you didnโ€™t already know, we have our own dog walkers to walk your dog, so you donโ€™t have to!
