Sophia has been working hard on building strength and improving proprioception due to nerve damage from birth. For that extra bit of support, we’ve introduced the amazing carpal orthosis by WIMBA .

We’ll keep you updated as Sophia continues to get comfortable with her new brace!

🎥 Meet Albert, our brave hero who suffered from an FCE (Fibrocartilaginous Embolism), a sudden spinal cord injury that can cause paralysis or weakness in dogs. 🐾

An FCE occurs when a piece of fibrocartilage blocks blood flow to the spinal cord. Symptoms can come on suddenly, like paralysis or weakness, often in the rear limbs. Diagnosis usually involves clinical signs and MRI scans.

While there's no specific cure for FCE, supportive care and rehabilitation, such as physical therapy and controlled exercise, are key to recovery. 🏋️‍♂️

Albert's journey reminds us of the importance of swift veterinary care and the power of rehabilitation. With proper care, many dogs can regain mobility and enjoy a good quality of life. 🌟

Let's cheer on Albert and all the amazing pets who overcome these challenges every day! 🐶💪

🐾 Discover the Power of TENS Therapy for Your Pet's Pain Relief! 🐾

🔌 TENS, short for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, is more than just a treatment—it's a game-changer in pet care! Harnessing the gentle power of electrical currents, TENS targets your pet's nerves, offering safe, non-invasive pain management and accelerated healing.

✨ How Does TENS Work? ✨
Through a dual-action approach, TENS stimulates sensory nerves to trigger the body's natural pain relief mechanisms:

💚 Pain Gate Theory: By blocking pain signals in the spinal cord, TENS overrides discomfort, reducing pain perception.
💚 Opioid Mechanism: With lower-frequency stimulation, TENS activates the body's own opioid system, releasing endorphins like enkephalin for holistic pain relief.

🌟 Benefits for Your Furry Friend 🌟
- Pain Relief & Management: Ideal for post-surgery, injury recovery, and chronic conditions like arthritis.
- Non-Invasive: Say goodbye to side effects—TENS offers a gentle alternative.
- Muscle Relaxation: Promotes flexibility and mobility, easing muscle spasms for happier, healthier pets.
- Accelerated Healing: Boosts natural healing processes for speedier recovery.
- Complementary Therapy: Pair with massage, hydrotherapy, and more to enhance results and improve your pet's quality of life.

Ready to give your pet the care they deserve? 🐶💖 Contact us to explore the transformative benefits of TENS therapy today!

Massage is one of the many modalities we as veterinary physiotherapists to help improve your pup's quality of life! Here are some of the benefits of canine massage therapy:

❤️Reduces stress and promotes relaxation - as with their human counterparts massage helps dogs relax by reducing muscle tension and promotes a sense of calmness, This can be especially beneficial for anxious or stressed dogs.
🩷Pain relief - because of the effects massage has on the connective tissue it can help reduce muscle pain and soft tissue discomfort that could be due secondary to injury or conditions like osteoarthritis.
🧡Improve circulation and lymphatic flow - the manual pressure of massage creates pressure in the blood and lymphatic vessels which help to stimulate the flow of blood and lymph through the body. Some techniques also cause localized dilation of the vessels due to the heat created. This dilation then causes an increase in the flow rate. And with the relaxation of muscles the circulation is no longer impeded and can allow for better blood flow.
💛Improve flexibility and movement - by addressing muscle tightness/spasm, breaking down adhesions between soft tissue (either due to chronic disuse of in the case of scar tissue), postural awareness and muscle length massage can improve your dog's range of motion and in the case with older dogs improve their desire to move and exercise.
💚Supports the immune system - by reducing stress, reducing pain, improving blood and lymph flow and improving mobility massage and aid in supporting the immune system for you dog.

30/10/2023

🐶 What is hip dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia (HD) is a genetic condition that affects the development of the hip joint causing laxity. The abnormality is caused by the loosening of the surrounding soft tissue (ligaments and joint capsule) which then in turn causes instability. This instability and the abnormal forces going though the joint then affects the shape of the developing ‘ball and socket’ joint of the hip either causing the ‘socket’ part to be flat or the ‘ball’ part to be malformed. The hips are normal at birth until the soft tissue starts to loosen which could happen at 4 to 12 months of age. All dogs with HD will develop secondary Osteoarthritis (OA) sometime in their life.

🐶 What causes HD?

Hip dysplasia (HD) is a genetic condition and is predominantly hereditary. Dogs that are most affected are medium to large and giant breed dogs but some breeds of smaller dogs such as Pugs and French Bulldogs can also be susceptible to HD. While HD is a genetic condition there are environmental factors that can exacerbate the condition in dogs with a predisposition causing clinical problems. Environmental factors such as:

🐕 Improper weight - If your puppy has a genetic predisposition for HD extra weight can increase the risk of the condition developing. Amount of damage will be dependant on the amount of force so the heavier the puppy the more force will be going the hip joints

🐩 Nutrition - Improper nutrition can affect the growth rate of puppies. Feeding a nutritionally balanced diet that is tailored to their needs is essential as rapid growth can affect puppies that have a genetic predisposition for hip dysplasia. This is especially true for large and giant breed puppies.

🐕 Too much or too little exercise - Puppies that do not get enough exercise will not develop the necessary muscles to help with the stability of the hips joints. Too much exercise, especially the wrong type of exercise, will put them at higher risk of developing hip dysplasia.

🐶 Signs of hip dysplasia?

🐶 Stiffness especially when getting up or after exercise
🐶 Exercise intolerance
🐶 Difficulty getting up, sitting down or lying down
🐶 Difficulty going up the stairs or getting in the car
🐶 Stiff or waddling walk and ‘bunny-hopping’ when running
🐶 Reduced range of the hips
🐶 Protective of the hip region during grooming or brushing
🐶 Loss of muscle mass in their hind legs

Some dogs may not show advert signs of pain and discomfort at home but clinically affected dogs are often painful during examination by the veterinarian.

🐶 How does physiotherapy help?

The main aim of treating hip dysplasia, through physiotherapy, is to build and strengthen the muscle groups that are responsible for maintaining stability of the hip joints. In the road to improving stability and strength other facets also need to be addressed such as:
🔹 Pain in the hip joints due to developing osteoarthritis well as compensatory pain
🔹 Range of motion of the hip joints, seeing as they start to lose range due to not using the the joint to its fullest extent in a attempt to avoid pain and discomfort
🔹 Core strength to help with any compensatory postural changes

By addressing pain and range of motion we make it easier to build and maintain muscle mass. Pain plays a massive factor when it comes to movement because pain causes us to avoid moving in certain ways. By addressing the pain, and the reduced range of motion, it makes it easier to build muscle as well as maintain it.
