Gingy went home today. This morning we went past the vet, who gave Gingy a quick once over & checked his temp as well. He's lost 1kg over the last week (now 5.3kg). our vet felt Gingy had recovered enough, so had his 3-in-1 vaccination as well as his rabies vaccination.

He was then returned to campus & walked about sniffing everything, before coming back for his kitty milk & butt scratches. He seemed very happy to be "home".

A big thank you to Derek Clover from Hayfields Veterinary Hospital for all your efforts & care in pulling Gingy through this ordeal!

Also a big thank you to all those who donated towards his vet bill (& those BackaBuddy donors as well) - we are pleased to say that his vet bill has been fully settled 🥳

Gingy update: Gingy is back to his usual self today, so we'll be taking him for his rabies vaccination tomorrow & then he'll return to the workplace. We feel that if we keep him closed inside in a strange place any longer, he may begin to stress again

We have prepared posters to alert people that he is being fed kibble by a dedicated group of individuals & he is not to be fed wet food (be it cat or human). This will reduce the risk of any future poisoning (& also he's not too keen on wet food, which means it often may stand & in the heat, increasing bacterial growth)

The 3 little newborns from Monday (aka the pretzels) are doing OK. Well, 2 are picking up weight nicely, but the littlest one is struggling a bit. He/she had an upset tummy for a couple of days but has come right, so hoping it'll now start putting on weight too 🙏🏻

Seems like all the gingers are having a tough time at the moment!

On Wednesday Helga contacted us regarding this heavily pregnant mommy, whose owner had passed away & mommy is very confused by the whole situation.

She's semi-feral, so is touchable although not able to be picked up & cuddled. At the moment she sits and looks at us with her big eyes, hisses if we attempt to touch her directly, but loves a back scratch with a plastic hand on a stick.

A chap in a nearby flat has been feeding her & managed to get her for us, so we gave him the option of naming her - he decided on Shelia 💜. Sheila is eating & drinking well & although still learning to trust us, is not stressed & quite content.

Finally time for some other updates (not that Gingy isn't important, but he's now stabilised)...

Late last Sunday afternoon we uplifted heavily pregnant "Honey" & she came into our care. She has just exploded since her arrival - see 2nd pic (& tiring easily since today, so we think the kittens are not far off).

Her & her brother, Bear (also uplifted as they were a bonded pair; but we've been told he's not the father thankfully) were being fed by a family since their owners moved & abandoned them behind 😫. The people that were feeding them could not afford to keep them any longer unfortunately.

If Gingy wants to be a babycat & drink Royal Canin SA babycat milk for his recovery... then that's what he'll get 🥳

The licking of his lips showed he really enjoyed that!!

14/09/2024

Then we thought let's try him on some Royal Canin SA babycat milk... and wow that was a hit! If he has ulcers in his mouth from the toxins, then likely has in his throat too.. so the warm milk is probably quite soothing!

Gingy seems a little better this morning. He has still not eaten 😕. As unimpressed as he was we syringed him some Hills AD so we could give him his antibiotic tablet. Giving him his tablet was quite the task... but eventually on about the 5th try we got it down!

We tried him on some strong smelling pilchard cat food, showed some interest but wouldn't eat any either 😕

13th September update on Gingy:

He ate a little overnight & is passing urine & the bowels are also starting to work, but unfortunately he has lost body mass. His body temperature maintained overnight without a heating pad. Gingy had his drip removed, so that will make him feel a whole lot better as well.

At this point the benefits of being in hospital is negated by the stress of being there. As a semi-feral cat, where the world is his home, stress from the confinement is kicking in (which may well be contributing to his not eating, but we reluctant to give him an appetite stimulant as his kidneys & liver are still under strain to rid his body of the toxins).

So, he is being discharged late this afternoon & will spend the weekend (at least) with Suzanne in a secure room. Hopefully the freedom of a bit more space will relax him enough to start eating. We will continue to give him the Hill’s Pet Nutrition a/d tin food for his recovery, but we also have lots of other options to try entice him. He was previously a "kibble" boy, but due to an ulcer on the roof of his mouth & tongue, kibble hurts too much to eat at the moment.

So, whilst it sounds positive news for Gingy, we are not yet out of the woods nor at the end of the road. Please continue to keep him in your prayers & consider contributing to his vet bill (details below); if you are unable to contribute, please share this post &/or the BackaBuddy campaign far & wide - https://www.backabuddy.co.za/campaign/community-cat-gingy-poisoned-fighting-to-survive

Gingy was looking a little better when we visited him this evening and had even eaten a little bit of wet food by himself during the afternoon. He is still staying at the vet & will only be discharged once eating properly & his bowel system is working properly.

Here's hoping he continues to improve 🤞🏻🙏🏻

12th September update on Gingy:

He is definitely feeling much better as he tried to jump out the cage over the kennel hand's shoulder this morning, which is a good sign as it shows he has had enough of being confined! They had to change his drip as he had a lot of subcutaneous bruising, so Gingy was not very impressed about that.

He's maintained his body temperature, which is great... but still not eating. He will be syringe fed food every few hours this morning. It is vital he eats (barring the obvious reasons) as otherwise his body will begin to breakdown fat & the byproduct of which is ketones which will then cause kidney issues.

We have also created a Backabuddy Campaign for his anticipated vet bills - please share on your WhatsApp statuses / groups etc

***LONG READ *** Community cat Gingy poisoned & fighting to survive

Upon arrival to the feeding spot yesterday morning Suzanne could tell that Gingy was very lethargic and just not himself. Being the foody he normally is, that he could not even be enticed for food, let alone the butt scratches we could tell something was up. Upon trying to convince him to climb into his bed, did we only realise how severe the situation was as he staggered like a drunkard that had had a heavy night out on the town! He needed to get to the vet… and fast!

Suzanne bundled him up in one of his blankets & climbed into a colleague’s car, who drove us straight to our vet. This in itself was risky, as being a semi-feral cat that we had never been able to pick up & who would nip you when he’d had enough love. However, he was quite subdued & even purred on the way there!

We were quickly seen to at the vet, who confirmed that it appeared as if he had been poisoned! He was immediately put on a drip, given activated charcoal & intralipids to reverse the toxicity. However shortly afterwards he crashed & an xray was done and they found fluid on his lungs. He was given cortisone and a diuretic and the fluid on his lungs had diminished. They did basic bloodwork & his kidney enzymes all came back normal. He improved as the day progressed & even ate half a bowl of food. Gingy was kept overnight at the vet on his drip & heater pad & all being well would be discharged the next day.

Unfortunately, this morning did not bring good news. Gingy’s temperature had dropped to 33 (cats run on same temperature range as humans) & his blood sugars were elevated. He had also vomited overnight. Our vet indicated that this is starting to look more like a malicious poisoning with ethylene glycol (antifreeze). More bloods were done & kidney & liver enzymes all came back normal. Treatment is continuing the same, in the hope that it is just taking time to work the toxicity out of his system. At this point Gingy’s odds of survival are 50/50 & is still obviously at the vet.

We are hoping that Gingy fights & pulls through, but at the same time we have a mounting vet bill for hospitalisation & treatment of an “unowned” cat. As difficult as it is to ask for help, we know we can’t do this alone.

Please consider donating to Gingy's vet bill of R4499.50 for yesterday alone) - his life counts too! He couldn’t be left to die because someone was cruel and vile. Don’t let this be his end please!

Donations can be made into our vet account (please WhatsApp PoP to 082 478 5860):

We are happy to report that the 4 newborns uplifted yesterday survived the night.

09/09/2024

This morning we were contacted by Mike who lives on a farm in Camperdown. Yesterday afternoon he spotted 6 newborn kittens in his workshop, so he left them undisturbed hoping the mommy would come back. This morning he went to check on them & mommy still had not returned, so he gave them a bit of water & reached out to us. By this time 2 had already passed away 💔💔. This is what happens when you don't sterilise, we get left with newborns fighting for their lives in this kind of weather 🥶😭

After asking everyone we could think of in that area (as he had no transport), our fosters Janet & Michelle decided the babies could not be left any longer & they drove all the way from Wartburg to uplift the babies (if anyone would like to contribute towards some petrol money that would be appreciated - bank details in the comments). You both are awesome 🌟🌟

The kittens are very small (65-72g, somewhat smaller than normal newborns) & were severely dehydrated. They are drinking well & are drinking just under 1ml per feed. Janet is feeding them every hour at present to boost their hydration levels. Please keep these littlies in your thoughts & prayers (as well as the 2 babies who never made it 🌈🌈 ), as well as Janet who has a long night ahead of her with these littlies.

But... that's not the end of the story. Mike started feeding 4/5 kittens & as didn't have funds to sterilise, he now sits with a major cat problem. As he's without transport, he could not even take any to the SPCA to try & reduce his numbers. He has over 20 cats & 6 of the females are ready to pop we've been told 🙈🙈🙈. There are also some ferals around. Sadly the property owner does not want the cats there, his sister from the US who is coming to visit is highly allergic, his dogs can only go outside supervised when he's there & feeding all the cats is no longer affordable. Once we receive the details of how many etc, we will see how we are able to help him.

Another 2 pre-spring arrivals 🌻🌷... these are sisters to last night's little hissy missy, but these 2 are very calm. This afternoon Andrea messaged us that the little tabby/white had girl fallen off the verandah roof & had a slight bleeding on her nose (she still sounds a bit nasal, so maybe a bit of inflammation). Then when her daughter arrived home they spotted a 3rd kitten on the roof. Mommy was around, so they left it be. A short while later they checked & she too had fallen off the verandah roof 😔, yet mommy had disappeared.

They are starting a regular feeding schedule (as advised by Pmb Feral Cats TSR), so that mommy can be trapped & sterilised.
