"In the meadow so bright, donkeys roam,
Their hooves tapping to a joyful tone.
Their hearts full of love, their spirits light,
They wish humans Christmas blessings, day and night.
May your days be merry, filled with cheer,
And may the Christmas season bring you joy, my dear"

It is going to be a very hot day๐Ÿ’ง
Water access is vital for horses and donkeys.
We, as many other animals, need water regularly, and we need plenty of time to drink.
Do not rush us ๐Ÿ’ฆ
The short-term effects of not drinking enough water can lead to lethargy, weight loss, and poor health.
Pssssst. Do not forget to join us on 16 December for the The Big Walk for Wilbur

This is where I live ๐Ÿก
"The Viking practice of covering a building or roof in greenery has found its place again in modern architecture.

Itโ€™s part of biophilic design and the construction was termed sod or turf roofs.

There is an example right on our doorstep at the Grass Roof restaurant in Gqeberha โ€” the โ€œforeignโ€ sight of which was a source of great fascination and attracted many when it was established years ago.

And now there is a newly planted roof over the changing rooms at its running/walking track on the Heron Road, Lovemore Park, property.

This time they are not roofed with grass, but rather tough indigenous groundcovers Plectranthus neochilus (common spur flower), Carpobrotus edulis (sour fig) and nasturtiums (Tropaelum).

As spring and summer approach, the roof will sparkle with flowers instead of lawn.

Biophilic design offers a way to create a link between people and nature in building and interior design.

It feeds our intrinsic love of nature and also promotes cognitive function, physical health and psychological wellbeing.

The practical advantages of a grass roof are weighing down the building so it does not blow away, allowing it to meld with its natural environment, sometimes for the purpose of camouflage and insulation โ€” keeping the building cool in summer and warm in winter.

These roofs absorb water, create a habitat for wildlife, decrease the stress of people around the roof, help lower the urban temperature, and promote energy conservation as the building will not require heating or cooling. This also means there will be fewer gas emissions from this process.

The plants on the roof produce oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the air.

As water evaporates from the plantsโ€™ leaves, a natural process occurs which cools the air.

Fire retardation is another advantage โ€” the turf roof provides protection for your home.

Benefits of roof gardens in the city, particularly, are that they reduce pollution. Plants and greenery in general help reduce the levels of artificial pollutants.

They serve to filter them as well as remove high levels of poisonous gasses from exhaust fumes and other harmful gasses from the atmosphere.

Plants in general improve the environment and also foster wildlife.

If the conditions are right, they can become entire little ecosystems of insects, plants and other friendly wildlife.

It is more costly to install grass on a roof, but it is said to increase the lifespan of the roof by providing it with protection against the elements.

In the city, a grass roof acts as an effective sound insulator, allowing buildingsโ€™ inhabitants to be undisturbed by traffic and other city noises.

It is an ideal means for soundproofing homes in crowded areas too.

Mike and Nicky Charlewoodโ€™s motivation for creating another โ€œliving roofโ€ recently was to disguise the ugliness of the shipping container from which the structure was built, making it more aesthetically pleasing and avoid it being visually intrusive in the countryside around them.

Construction having begun two years ago made for timing that prompted friends to ask Mike teasingly whether he was building himself a bunker.

The container was originally installed for conversion into a boardroom. Subsequently it has been repurposed as ablution facilities for those walking/running the trail which has been thoughtfully carved out in the countryside below the Grass Roof restaurant.

โ€œShipping containers tend to become unbearably hot inside during summer,โ€ Mike says. โ€œThe green covering serves to keep the interior temperatures reasonable.โ€™โ€™

Mike offered guidelines on constructing the structure โ€” which measures 32m.ยฒ

โ€ข Create a gum pole framework.

โ€ข Cover it with IBR galvanised metal sheeting.

โ€ข The sheeting is usually used with the corrugations running downward, but should be used with the lines running across in a roof garden application. The โ€œvalleysโ€ hold the soil in place. The profile of the sheeting allows the soil, water and plants to be contained.

โ€ข Treat the sheets with bitumen paint. (This is an ABE product).

โ€ข Containers are wont to rust on the roof โ€” so it is important to coat the roof with this sealant if a container is the structure beneath.

โ€ข Begin planting by making a mixture of light soil โ€” a combination of soil and compost.

โ€ข Cover the area to be planted with โ€œchicken wireโ€ or wire mesh with a profile of about 100mm to allow you to plant through the holes in it. It also provides support for the plants, preventing them from slipping down the roof.

โ€ข The gradient of this roof is 40ยฐ, which also promotes water running off it.

A problem in the beginning was that plants at the top of the construction began sliding off. For this reason, they suggest it was best to start planting the roof from the bottom.

โ€œThe hardest part was getting the planting to settleโ€. It was necessary to keep topping it up with soil.

A novel feature was introduced by planting thorn trees to poke through the โ€œwindowsโ€ in the design. As the trees mature, they will provide dappled shade.

Two years after planting began, the Charlewoods have not had to maintain the planting.

During the summer, a weekly borehole watering sustains the roof planting."
