Brain toys are often mentioned when talking about life enrichment for our dog.
Enriching for their daily routine is extremely important and there are many simple and easy methods to help stimulate them. Brain toys help mentally stimulate your dog and alleviate boredom during the day when you are working or unable to entertain them.
It encourages them to use their minds creatively to figure out how to retrieve the treat from the toy. Brain toys can also be very effectively employed at mealtimes by replacing the dog’s food bowl.
Here are some ideas for making your own simple and inexpensive brain toys.
A plastic water or cold drink bottle with the labels removed and the cap securely fastened can be effectively used as an inexpensive brain toy. Simply cut a hole about the size of a R5 coin in the side of the bottle and fill with their dog pellets or treats and let them role the bottle around on the ground, they will be rewarded by the food falling out through the hole in the bottle.
A muffin baking tray is also a cheap and effective toy that can be used with treats or as a food bowl. Place a treat or portion of the dog’s meal in the recesses of the muffin try and place a tennis ball over each recess, then allow the dog to figure out how to retrieve the food.
The “blanket sausage” is another effective and fun way for the dog to feed. Lay a small blanket or towel flat on the ground. Sprinkle a line of dog food down one side and then roll the edge of the blanket over the food. Continue doing this until you have a rolled up “sausage” of blanket and dog food. Give it to the dog and let him figure out how to access the food.
A lick mat or snuffle mat available from most quality pet stores is another very good form of brain toy. Both are very easy to make using your own imagination.
Always check when making your own brain toys that there are no small pieces that can be swallowed or sharp edges that can be harmful to the dog.
