Little Litha was carried to us in a box this evening by a very caring little boy. He has been well cared for despite his owner’s circumstances and is already sterilised and vaccinated. Tonight he is fighting for his life after having been poisoned. Thank you to every client that refuses their change, adds a little extra to their bills or deposits into our rescue fund if able. It means that we can continue to take these cases every day.

Your cat’s mouth
Symptoms of a painful mouth:
🐈 bad breath
🐈⬛ begging for food and then not eating
🐈 flinching or crying out while eating
🐈⬛ drooling or discharge around mouth or on front paws
🐈 clumped coat and dead hair from not grooming
Older cats often suffer from periodontal disease causing bacterial infections, loose and rotten teeth and exposed roots. Older kitties should have their dental health checked regularly. Chronic dental infections can cause life threatening disease in the rest of the body.
Cats of all ages, especially those that are immune compromised ie due to diseases such as FIV or cats that have suffered from snuffles, often present with immune related gum disease and stomatitis( pictured below). This incredibly painful condition can be a chronic problem needing lifelong management.
Like us, cats can get severe cavities in their teeth that can cause pain and tooth fractures.
Treatment includes antibiotics, anti inflammatory medications, special dental diets, regular cleaning and polishing under sedation and extraction of diseased teeth. In the case of chronic gum disease or stomatitis , the best treatment is to remove all the cats teeth as early as possible. Although this sounds drastic, it saves the cat from a lifetime of pain and steroid treatments.

We estimate that this beautiful boy is about 3/4 years old. He has an ongoing chronic condition (a**l gland fistulas) so he will need a diligent and loving home, if interested we will discuss all in detail, so you are informed. We would offer ongoing treatment at a reduced cost for all treatment done with the clinic for him. He is very sweet but nervous so will need kindness to come out of his shell.

The SDMBD syndrome… small dog mauled by big dog. This damage can so easily be underestimated and not receive the necessary treatment immediately. This little dog was still standing and wagging her tail, had NO broken skin, but a broken rib, big tear through the muscles between the ribs, pneumothorax and extensive severe bruising of the whole thorax. The skin is thin and very flexible so just stretches around the big dog’s relatively blunt teeth while they do a huge amount of damage. On a fluffy little dog there would have been no ‘flail chest’ visible, no hint of the lung damage until the air in the chest and under the skin caused the lungs to collapse. Always get small dogs checked after an incident with a big dog, rather a false alarm than death a few hours later.
Happy Ending story:
Our two special three legged dogs went to their furever home today. They were smiling and bouncing around with joy as they left the clinic!
As most of our lovely clients know, we have had some changes in the Blue Bush Team.
We welcome Dr Zenobia Rasool as our full day vet and Dr Helizna Swart as our half day vet. They are a valuable addition to our team!
We are still working at a high capacity and appreciate understanding when we must refer when at capacity- our focus is to provide excellent care to patients in our care and we cannot do this if over capacity for consults and/or in patient care.
Thank you to all our clients that understand and that treat us with kindness, it helps us provide a happier environment for pet care :)

Happy 20th Blue Bush Animal Clinic anniversary Melanie Mulock-Bentley. Much love and gratitude to my other pair of hands, one of my best friends, unending loyalty to Blue Bush and the mainstay of our CoSanc shelter and welfare organisation. It is NOT easy to keep going day after day, year after year in either veterinary or animal welfare, Mel is one of those special people who has what it takes.

We have a mommy with three kittens that we really want to find a fosterer for. The kittens are about 6 weeks old so need to be with mommy for another 3 weeks before we can start looking for permanent homes. They are healthy and happy bundles of joy.

What is better than a new four-legged fur friend? a three-legged bundle of joy!
We have two amazing three-legged dogs looking for a second chance and an amazing new family. They have both adapted so well and are full of love. They are bomb proof with other dogs but have not been cat tested as yet. They are not a pair so can be homed separately but do get on well so would be happy to go together.
Tiger (brown and white mix breed) is around 4/5 years old. Bobby (Malinois cross) is around 1 years old. Both sterilised.

Bran is looking for a forever home. He was a stray that was brought in from Kya Sands but never claimed. He is just such a Lekker dog. Approximately 3 year old neutered male. He loves playing with humans and other dogs. Is very alert and protective. Not cat friendly.
