Always get your horses teeth checked. This is why horses must have dentals done yearly to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

SUBCHONDRAL BONE CYST LESIONS 🦴
The surgical team at the EHPC recently performed a cutting-edge procedure on the lovely "Jager."
Jager presented with a subchondral bone cyst-like lesion (“bone cyst”) on the medial proximal radius of the right forelimb. Under general anaesthesia, Jager had a bioactive and bioresorbable bone fixation device (absorbable screw implant) placed into the lesion to stimulate its healing. The intervention was successfully conducted under full fluoroscopy (aka image amplification) guidance. This surgery is another alternative offered by the EHPC to treat “bone cysts”. The more commonly proposed treatment is the placement of an orthopaedic stainless steel screw across the lesion. In some instances, like in the case of Jager, this option is not practical and the newly published (Ravanetti et al, Equine Veterinary Journal 2022;54:97-105) absorbable screw technique was the best alternative for him. Thanks to their international network and direct communication with the author of this new technique, the team at Roseworthy were able to propose this solution to Jager’s owner and have the implants and associated instruments shipped from Italy. One of the major advantages of the absorbable implant is that it doesn’t require removal as is sometimes necessary with the metallic screw.
A third possibility to treat “bone cysts” available at the EHPC, is a true bone and cartilage graft where a cylinder of bone and associated cartilage are harvested from a healthy joint and transplanted inside the “cyst” of the injured joint. This technique is called "mosaic arthroplasty" - see more on this technique in our recent post.
With a wide range of options to treat “bone cysts” of all sizes and locations, the EHPC is the South Australian platform for the management of this performance limiting articular condition.
Jager has returned home to continue his recovery until his re-check appointments after 12 weeks of gradual rehabilitation. 🐴
