When a saddle no longer fits, several problems can arise. One of the most common ones I see is muscle atrophy.

When a saddle is too tight, this causes continuous and localised pressure on the back muscles. The back muscles become damaged and start to waste away. Your horse is also in pain. A well fitted saddle will not only give these muscles a chance to develop but will also no longer cause pain to your horse.

“Something just doesn’t feel right with my horse”

One of the most common things I hear during a saddle fitting appointment is “Something just isn’t right when I ride”. Like us, your horse will change shape with changes in work load and will fluctuate in weight with the seasons. Getting your saddle fitted or refitted is the first step.

I conduct a thorough assessment of your horse and you to help fit you both. And yes, fitting you ridden is part of the appointment.

If you’re anything like me, I always research the equine professional I book to care for my horses. Whether it be the farrier, dentist or bodyworker. So, I wanted to save you the trouble about researching my background in horse care.

Like any other diligent horse care professional, I’m always filling any spare minute I have with study. I may be a little obsessed with equine anatomy, the process of how the horse thinks and equine biomechanics. Everything from lectures and research, world leading expert webinars, leading equine professional clinics or educational dissections.

My reason for seeking a profession in Saddle Fitting, is that my saddles didn’t fit. I couldn’t tell you exactly what was wrong at the time, I had that “gut feeling” it was the saddle. My horse wasn’t happy and my riding suffered. Hours of lessons wasted, insisting to the riding instructor that something was wrong with the saddle. And being told my horse was just “difficult”, when all she was trying to tell me is that the saddle hurt! The final straw was the beginning of year long journey to rehabilitate my sweet Riding Pony’s back after poor saddle fit. I promised her, never again. And here we are.

I have trained with Australia’s leading Saddle Fit expert, 3 months of intensive initial training just to begin. Add to that, training with the Society of Master Saddlers over a 3 year period. I additionally undertake further training with Paula Jeffery at every opportunity and have a huge support network of highly skilled saddle fitters to collaborate with. I also have travel overseas to further my Saddle Fit training later this year. And that’s just Saddle Fitting!

I’m currently studying an International Diploma of Equine Osteopathy. This course, what can I say, I’m obsessed. Learning about every inch of our equine partners in depth, the brilliance of equine biomechanics and rehabilitation is amazing. I also attend every educational dissection I can to gain a deeper understanding of equine anatomy.

I hope this helps you gain a little insight into me, my training and experience. The learning never stops. When I fit you and your horse, I too have been that person who’s saddle didn’t fit. I want the best for my horses, I want the best for yours too.

Why is it so important to have your saddle health checked?

In every fitting, I conduct a saddle health check. When I checked this beautiful clients saddle, I suspected a cracked tree. She was kind enough to donate the saddle to be stripped down. When I first took the panels off, the underside of the rails appeared to be intact. However, once I had stripped the seat off, we saw the cracks. Definitely time to retire this saddle.
