Happy Easter Long Weekend!
We thought we’d kick start the weekend with part 1 of our Easter toxicity series 🫶🏻
Indulging in the weekends festivities is joyous for us humans, but can be toxic for our fur companions.
Flowers, coffee and hot cross buns are also a common gift to have over the weekend so it’s important to be extra cautious around our fur babies 🥰

🏅 Introducing R***r

🐾 R***r is a long term patient of both Vets on Balwyn and and is seen by Dr Kevin. In September 2023 R***r was diagnosed with T Cell Lymphoma after presenting lethargic to the clinic and displaying swollen lymph nodes which were particularly obvious in his submandibular region.

🏥 After consulting with the Veterinary Oncology Consultants, Dr Kevin started R***r on an 18 week chemotherapy protocol which included intravenous rounds of chemotherapy done in clinic as well as oral tablet chemotherapy to be given at home.

👏🏼 R***r tolerated chemotherapy incredibly well and we are pleased to say he had his last round of treatment today!

❤️‍🩹 He will now be closely monitored by his diligent owner and have regular check ups with Dr Kevin where routine bloodwork will be taken.

🎉 Today in clinic the nurses spoiled R***r with extra treats and lots of pats for his “chemo finito” party and sent him home with a fridge magnet for his pawrents

🫶🏻 Both teams at Vets on Parker and Vets on Balwyn wish R***r and his family all the best moving forward!

Did you know that some dogs need their a**l glands manually expressed every couple of months to prevent painful infections? Whilst the a**l glands of dogs usually empty naturally during defecation, some pets may require additional veterinary assistance to prevent overfilling of their a**l glands.

If your dog is scooting their bottom along the ground, licking at their back end, or releasing unpleasant “fishy” smells, it’s an excellent idea to scoot down to our clinic to have a vet assess the situation!

Should you be regularly clipping your dog’s nails? Most dogs require clipping their dew claws (thumbnails) every 6-8 weeks to prevent overgrowth. Additionally, older dogs or dogs that do not regularly run on pavement often need general nail clipping every few months. Keeping your pet’s nails short is essential to facilitate comfortable movement and grip on hard floors and prevent painful nail curling and overgrowth into the footpads.

If your cat is prone to vomiting up the odd hairball but seems otherwise well, you may be able to help reduce hairball episodes by:

- Regularly brushing them (at least twice weekly) to remove loose fur
- The regular administration of a safe, veterinary-approved, palatable laxative paste
- Increasing the moisture and/or fibre content of your cat’s diet to help any hair pass more easily through their gut.

We recommend a prompt check-up with our experienced veterinary team if your cat is vomiting regularly or showing any other symptoms of unwellness.

To check your cat for a flea infestation, search their fur for adult fleas or dark black specks of flea poo known as “flea dirt”. You can also assess them for flea-related skin irritation symptoms, such as overgrooming around their belly, lower back, and hindlegs, or red scabby skin lumps. Who are the four “friends” we don’t want your new pup to become closely acquainted with? Why, roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, and tapeworm, of course! Young pups can become infected with these intestinal worms through the placenta or via their mother’s milk. Infected puppies may show symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, bottom itchiness, or a failure to thrive. To protect your puppy against intestinal worms, consult our team about safe and thorough parasite control routines.

To help keep your cat “feline fine”, ensure you protect them against the effects of common infectious diseases by keeping their vaccinations up to date.

Depending on your cat’s particular lifestyle, they may require only the core F3 vaccination (against feline panleukopenia and two common causes of cat flu), or they may be recommended to also receive additional vaccinations (such as feline leukaemia virus and chlamydia).

These vaccines are administered in a series of three injections for kittens and then again every 1-3 years after that.

What do skin and ear allergies look like in cats? Like with dogs, you can recognise cat skin allergies by signs of hair loss, overgrooming, scabs, and frequent scratching. Ear infections often appear as head shaking, ear scratching and black discharge from the ear ca**ls. Causes of cat allergies vary, including fleas, environmental or food allergies. Call the clinic today if you suspect your cat might have allergies, as many effective treatments are available.

If your dog has previously had an ear infection, you might wonder whether you should clean their ears routinely to prevent future infections. Generally, the answer is no. Most dogs only need their ears cleaned regularly if your veterinarian recommends it. Some dogs may benefit from ear cleaning, such as those with anatomical changes to the ear causing issues with self-cleaning or drainage. However, this should still be under the guidance of your vet, as over-cleaning may predispose to infection.

🐾 Frankie Follow Up 🐾 Frankie came in for his post operative check up after a grass seed removal from his hind paw. At this visit we removed his bandage and gave lots of treats! With the bandage off he will have to rest for a few more days but after that it’s all fun and games for the sweet boy!

Our team is passionate about reducing waste and recycling whenever possible! ♻️ With all the consumables we go through on a daily basis e.g. syringe and needle wrappers, we even collect the soft plastics for recycling by our amazing @cityofboroondara council. ❤️🌏 It's hard not to be inspired by our resident C.R.O.
