Peaches gets to come on a road trip to TAFE today, to be a guinea pig 😉 for some health assessments in the Cert III animal care services class.

Peaches was our first pet guinea pig (besides as children) before starting the rescue. Still going strong, just over 5 years old 🩷

Very happy to announce that the ceiling is no longer leaking and everything is somewhat back to normal! 😅

Although a very inconvenient and expensive 💵 problem to have, it did give us an opportunity to do a thorough clean (walls, floors, backs of cages) of the pig room and also a bit of a reshuffle of cages. 😊

Thank you to everyone who offered to take pigs 🫶🏼

🚨UPDATE🚨

Please bare with us over the coming days if we are absent, and if we take a little longer to respond.

Unfortunately we have some plumbing issues which have led to a leak in our ceiling, in the pig room (the main bathroom is right above it).

We have had to evacuate all of the pigs into our dining room for the time being. We are having a plumber come out first thing in the morning, and hopefully 🤞🏻 it will be all fixed up tomorrow.

But as you can imagine we are very stressed and this has all been very unexpected.

For the time being, we are closed to boarders, and product sales will have to go on hold too.

We are hanging tight for now, however if by any chance the problem cannot be fixed tomorrow - we are doing a preemptive call out for foster carers. Even if you only have capacity to take on 1 or 2 pigs, please reach out to us. 🙏🏻

Thank you ###

Rest in peace Hagrid 💔🌈

To say this is a complete shock is an understatement.

When I did the nightly feed of the piggies last night, everyone seemed a-okay, but when I went in to check on the pigs today, Hagrid was already gone. ☹️

Upon inspecting him, there were no obvious external signs of what could have been the cause. Being a satin approaching 3-4 years old, we suspect something may have been going on internally that we were unaware of due to there being no obvious symptoms.

A very sad and unexpected day for the rescue.

Hay everybody! 🌾

We firstly want to apologise to everybody who has reached out to us asking for hay, and for the delay in stock this time round. With being on and off sick for a while and also starting back at TAFE, among other life things, it’s been a bit hectic!

We are however officially restocked! 🐹

We have both Rhodes & Barley hay available.
The rhodes is a little sun damaged/faded this time so we have decided to discount the large bags for this particular batch.

💰 Prices as follows:
- Rhodes regular bag $5
- Rhodes large bag $10
- Barley regular bag $5
- Barley large bag $12

🐹 Call for donations 🐹

The rescue is in need of restocking for some much used medical items. We have put together an amazon order with the things we need, totalling $175.

We were wondering if anyone might be able to help us cover some of the cost.

A brief description of the items & why we need them:
• Wound gel & gauze - used for wound care such as bumblefoot, ruptured cysts
• Various syringes - for drawing out medication and critical care feeds
• Sharps container - for proper disposal of used sharps such as needles
• Syptic powder - to stop bleeding in case of trimming the quick during a nail trim

Donations can be made via bank transfer using the following details:
Name: Rudy’s Rodent Refuge
BSB: 484799
Account number: 607836040

OR

Amazon gift card (these can also be purchased via afterpay)

If you are in a position to make a donation - any amount is greatly appreciated!

Thank you all so much! Some rescue updates coming soon 💖

🐹💗 SPONSOR A PIGGY 💗🐹

Although we are a newer rescue, we do have a number of pigs here who are either permanent residents due to age/medical issues, or are awaiting veterinary attention. This means we have a number of pigs who are considered “not fit to adopt,” meaning the refuge is their home.

As you would know, vet costs do add up quickly, so we are looking for sponsors to help ease these costs a bit! We are asking for $5/week to sponsor a piggy. This can be arranged as either a weekly or fortnightly payment of $10.

Here’s a little bit about some of the piggies needing sponsorship:

Hagrid: Hagrid is a low displaying satin/satin carrier. At the moment, Hagrid is on vitamin C supplementation. We are currently saving for x-rays so that we can investigate if there are any signs of osteodystrophy.

Fred: Fred is a low displaying satin/satin carrier. At the moment, Fred is on vitamin C supplementation. We are currently saving for x-rays so that we can investigate if there are any signs of osteodystrophy.

George: George is a satin. Like his brothers, he is on vitamin C supplementation. We are currently saving for x-rays so that we can investigate if there are any signs of osteodystrophy.

Wombat: Wombat is a permanent resident due to his ripe old age of 8 1/2. Wombat has arthritis in his hind legs and requires ongoing pain management as well as vitamin C supplementation and monthly cartrophen injections.

Manny: Manny is a permanent resident due to his ripe old age of approx 7. Manny has arthritis in his hind legs and requires ongoing pain management as well as vitamin C supplementation and monthly cartrophen injections.

Evie: Evie is a satin; she came to us with two cysts, one has healed with draining and medication, however the other is still persisting. It is non cancerous and not bothering her for now, however will eventually need surgical removal. She is also on vitamin C supplementation, and we would like to do some x-rays to investigate whether she is showing any signs of osteodystrophy also.

Esther: Esther is one of our senior girls approximately 6 years old. We had her spayed due to having cystic ovaries. She has arthritis and like the senior boys is on pain medication, vitamin C supplementation and monthly cartrophen injections.

Mabel: Mabel is a young girl approx 2 years old. She appears to be a satin, however her main issue is a hernia on her abdomen which needs removal. Though this is not an emergency, we would like to remove this as soon as possible to make her a bit more comfy. She is also on pain management and Vitamin C due to some barbering.

Agnes: Agnes came to us with severe bumblefoot, which has healed for the most part however she does have little spouts of it here and there which we are managing with pain relief and foot soaks. She had to have one digit removed which she is doing great without. She is also approx 6 years old and showing early signs of arthritis, likely going to start injections soon but she is managing with pain relief for now.

As well as these permanent residents, we have a number of boys that require desexing, as well as girls needing to be investigated for cystic ovaries (which, if found will require cystic spay).

If you are interested in sponsoring a piggy for us, please reach out via DM. We can send you photos of the piggies needing sponsorship 🩷

We also accept once off donations as we know sponsoring is not feasible for everybody.

We mean it when we say every little bit does help. Whether it’s food, vet care, or new cages, every dollar goes a long way. 🤞🏻

Leo has been with us for a while, as we had tried him with several other boys and they did not get along.

Mikey was one of the pigs we caught as part of the Jindalee strays/dumping case with another rescue. He is doing wonderfully and is in great health.

We have finally found Leo his match with Mikey. These two get along beautifully, always popcorning through big piles of hay. They have been housed together for a few months now and their bond is strong.

Leo loves cuddles, Mikey is okay with being held but is a little more shy and will need regular gentle handling for him to get used to you.

Unfortunately, Bubbles & Squint didn’t work out in their adopted home, so a little while back they were returned to us. They are once again looking for their forever home. These girls are roughly 3 years old now.

They are bonded sisters and have always been together. They have previously been in a trio, so would likely take to some extra friends if they were the right match.

Bubbles is bossy, and does appreciate cuddles.
Squint is a bit more shy and submissive. She will nibble at your fingers a little at first, but after a week or two she tends to settle down nicely.

Would suit a family with older kids, who will be gentle with them.

Adoption fee $70.

Been pretty under the weather for the last few weeks; battling sickness and an ankle injury.

Quite honestly haven’t had a whole lot of energy for posting.

I am on the mend now, so hoping to get back into the swing of things soon 😅

All of the pigs are going well.

Yesterday, Esther had her revisit with our vet after her desexing surgery.

Our vet is very happy with how she’s healing post-op, our goal now is to get some more weight onto her.

She has also been started on cartrophen injections to manage her arthritis. Onwards and upwards from here, go Esther!! 🩷
