🚨 Exciting Changes for Tail Feathers! 🚨

We’ve got some big updates to share with you all!

🌟 New Location: We’ve moved from Brisbane to beautiful Toowoomba. This change marks a fresh start for us, and we can’t wait to grow our Tail Feathers community here.

🌟 New Focus: As we’ve left the land needed for poultry, we’re no longer doing anything poultry-related. However, we will continue handraising a few parrots. Due to moving during the breeding season, we don’t expect any babies this year—but stay tuned for updates!

🌟 Rebranding: We’re in the process of changing our name from Tail Feathers Brisbane to simply Tail Feathers. Along with this, our website is temporarily down while we make updates to reflect our new direction.

🌟 A Busy Season: With both of us being school teachers, juggling a term 4 move, and raising three kids, it’s a hectic time! We’ll be a bit quiet for a while but promise to keep you in the loop as things settle down.

📣Very Limited Opportunity - Once gone they are gone.

This is the last time we will have waterfowl for sale as we are preparing for our next big adventure as a family.

We would love to see our beautiful birds go to homes where they will be loved and cherished as much as we have. They will provide someone with a brilliant foundation for any breeding program and are great birds to show (especially for kids to get involved with).

Please secure via the website and select pick up at checkout. There is no “postage” for these birds. If you need to arrange transport with a third party we highly recommend Niels Transport. All birds must be collected at the end of the month.

We will not be in a position to fill egg orders this season. So if you would like to fast track the grow out and sexing phase then now is your chance.

❓What’s the difference between BSO (Blue Silver Orange) and Blue Dark?

When choosing fertile eggs or birds labeled as Blue Dark, it’s important to know the difference. BSO stands for Blue Silver Orange (or shouldered, depending on who you ask). The key difference is the orange color. If Blue Dark birds haven’t been bred as true Blue Dark, they are actually BSO. While BSO birds are beautiful, this matters if you’re planning a breeding program or trying to avoid overpaying.

BSO birds are created by crossing blue or splash partridges with dark birds. This color can appear in just one generation, unlike Blue Dark, which requires many generations of selective breeding to remove the orange coloring. In males, the orange is especially obvious. A true Blue Dark rooster will have only a small amount of orange, red, or yellow on their shoulders, while a BSO rooster will have much more.

So, be cautious when “Blue Dark” birds are bred with splash or blue partridge birds—their offspring are BSO, not true Blue Dark.

Our BSO pen includes top-quality BSO roosters and hens. These breeding pens produce BSO birds, as well as DSO (Dark Silver Orange) and SSO (Splash Silver Orange).

Our passion project is developing a line of Blue Dark Brahma. A genuine blue dark line … some BSO (Blue Silver Orange) birds are confused (genuinely and not so genuinely) as blue darks as they are very similar looking but genetically they are different. If not understood then or sold incorrectly can be detrimental to a breeding program. The lighter pullet is a genuine blue dark hen. She is a first generation- she has good overall type but the penciling needs some work. To improve this we are bring in a pullet growing dark rooster who will hopefully improve the mossy penciling she currently has. Once we are happy with them we will be able to establish a strong line with beautiful crispy plumage and good strong large birds. It will take several generations to get there. This year we are hoping to breed more first generation blue darks with different birds to what was used the year before. We are using a BSO boy with minimal red in his shoulders and some crispy dark girls. Our boy is on the smaller side to what we used last year so selecting girls with a crispy white base and size has been key. Another great show done and dusted for the season. The Caboolture District Poultry show has always been a well run show and this was no exception 🌸 🖤Our Cayuga were the stars ✨ and awarded with; champion Cayuga, champion heavy water fowl, champion waterfowl and reserve bird of show. 💛The buff Orpington were awarded with champion Orpington and reserve champion waterfowl. 🤍Conrad’s Sebrights were awarded champion Sebright 💜The Brahmas won; BSO; champion BSO, first cockerel, first pullet Splash partridge; champion splash, first and second pullet, Dark; first pullet Blue Partridge; first and second pullet, first cockerel, second and third hen Gold partridge; second pullet, 3rd hen 💙D’Anvers; champion D’Anver, first hen, pullet and cockerel Pups 🐶 🐶 enjoyed a day out too 🌸

Birds make fantastic companions, whether that be a friendly chirp and flutter to share the afternoon with or a conversation and a laugh at the end of the day. At Tail Feathers we have specifically selected species for the family home. Our birds are raised in our home in preparation for yours.

Tail Feathers Brisbane has selected species that can be kept in the modern home, in suburbia. The Cayuga, Toulouse and Sebastopol have been selected considering their size, purpose, temperament lower food consumption, inability to fly and egg laying abilities.

Maybe you're looking for a companion bird but living in an apartment or just prefer a quieter feathered roommate, check out our budgies and cockatiels... want something more unique (maybe outgrown the budgie), then the Princess Parrot, Lorikeet, Alexandrine or Galah is exactly that.
