Happy Sunday! I wanted to take a moment to welcome my new clients and page followers. For those of you new to my page or business, I thought I would share a little about myself and what I do. I graduated from Murdoch University in 2002 with a degree in Veterinary Medicine and Surgery. I spent my first few years here in WA working in equine practice. I then travelled to the UK and became a partner in a well respected Veterinary hospital (Catley Cross Veterinary Clinic). I enjoyed all aspects of general equine practice but developed a greater interest in equine dentistry and surgery. This is an often overlooked area and the advances that have been made and are continuing to be made in this field are exciting and rewarding. The positive impact of correct dentistry on our equine friends cannot be underestimated. While in the UK, I had the opportunity to further study equine dentistry and attended advanced courses in Europe. In 2015, being far from family with a young daughter, we decided to make the move home. This was the start of Pegasus Veterinary Equine Dentistry. It has been almost 10 years now and my business has gone from strength to strength. A huge thank you to my clients, many of whom I am lucky enough to call friends. I am dedicated and passionate about equine dentistry and welfare. From routine exams to advanced surgery. Thankyou to Harradine & Associates for the referral of this interesting case. This poor young pony had an abscess burst on his face (yellow arrow), X-rays determined that the cause of the abscess was a dental infection originating from the tooth root. You can see that the infection has eaten a pathway through the jaw bone (red circle) and the root to the front of the tooth has died (blue arrow and last photo in the series) He was given a sedation by intravenous drip, intravenous pain relief and a nerve block placed (to numb the jaw). After a little wiggling (well alot and on my knees!) the offending tooth was removed.

Can you think why this tooth is so large given how small he is?

WHY USE A VET DENTIST?

This horse presented with a history of having difficulty eating and foul smelling breath, a likely tooth problem?

Most often this is the case however on exam, this horse had a deep puncture wound to the underside of the tongue containing rotten feed.

With the right skills, medications, and equipment, these problems can be solved straight away by a qualified veterinary surgeon. Under sedation and with pain relief, the wound was cleaned, debrided (dead/damage tissue removed), and sutured closed.
