โ ๏ธ High temperatures across our region this week and little relief overnight means our ๐น๐ถ๐๐๐น๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐๐ could be in ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ด ๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ.
We've already seen and admitted a number of patients with ๐ฅต Heat stress / exhaustion,๐ง Dehydration and other heat related issues.

๏ธ place extra water bowls (not easily tipped over)
โ
๏ธ access to shade at ALL times
โ
๏ธ circulating air
โ
๏ธ fresh food / spritz foliage with water
โ๏ธ DO NOT rely on shade alone (a hutch or aviary can still overheat animals in the shade!!)
If you think your pet may have become a bit overheated or just seems a bit 'off', please contact for urgent advice!

With all the rain and flooding around our Far North region, this is a reminder to ensure your pets have safe, warm and dry ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐น๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐น๐น ๐๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ๐.
- Check your outdoor hutches and coops for flooding
- Provide extra shelter for aviary birds
- Relocate patio cages to protect from wind and rain
- Monitor enclosures for increased ant and pest activity
Also, the sudden cool temperatures and wet weather can also ๐จ๐ช๐ฅ๐ง๐๐จ๐จ ๐ก๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ก๐ ๐๐ข๐ข๐ช๐ฃ๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ข๐จ and cause some pets to become unwell very easily.
๐๐๐๐ฃ๐จ ๐ค๐ ๐๐ก๐ก๐ฃ๐๐จ๐จ can be hard to identify so here are some hints:
- fluffed up on perch or floor of cage
- "empty" or scant droppings
- quiet mentation
- decreased appetite
- wet nares/nostrils
- sneezing/sniffling

Glider update:
Since their public debut last week, our glider babies are still continuing to develop more day by day. Now an impressive 12 grams (yes, believe it or not, thatโs impressive), their eyes are opening, theyโre becoming more adventurous and guzzling over 1 mL of milk each feed!
Isnโt this little guy just adorable!
In the wild, echidnas have a sole diet of ants and termites. They use their long sticky tongues to reach into termite mounds and ant nests, the tongue is so sticky that the insects get stuck. The echidna then pulls its tongue back in and consumes the insects that have become stuck.
While in hospital, we try to replicate the diet as best as possible ensuring they receive the right vitamins and nutrients. Echidnas love a mix of an insect supplement and a high protein supplement, but are usually rather elusive about eating. This little one though couldnโt get into the bowl quick enough!
You may notice that this echidna doesnโt appear to have as many spines as โnormalโ. This is a very young echidna, likely an offspring from the most recent breeding season. As it gets older it will not only get larger but will also develop a lot more spines over its back.
Isnโt this gorgeous little Papuan Frogmouth the cutest...it even sounds just like a frog in a drain pipe donโt you think?!
Often mistaken for being owls...or tree branches, these peculiar looking (and sounding) birds are more closely related to nightjars and are primarily insectivorous. Unfortunately, theyโre often brought in to care with traumatic injuries following motor vehicle incidents sustained whilst out feeding after dark.
This young Papuan seems to be one of the lucky ones!
๐ท Weโll post some more photos soon...
Taking in the fresh air of freedom...seems pretty happy!
Have you ever seen a snake drinking water? Although it is widely known that snakes will often sit and soak in their water bowls, not everyone knows that they drink the water also.
As the days will slowly start to heat up, donโt forget to provide ALL your pets with fresh, clean water daily.
