HAPPY VET NURSE DAY 💖

09/10/2024

As stated by the Australian Veterinary Association:

'Veterinary nurses, under the direction, supervision and responsibility of veterinarians, provide nursing care to sick animals, and communicate with, and educate owners on the health care of their animals. The veterinary nurse also provides support to the veterinarian with technical work, surgical and peri-operative procedures, medical procedures, diagnostic testing and critical care. The veterinary profession benefits greatly when working as a team with appropriately educated and trained veterinary nurses.

The Australian Veterinary Nurses and Technicians (AVNAT) Voluntary Registration Scheme was set up by the VNCA. By creating the AVNAT Registration Scheme, the VNCA has established a self-regulation program, which will set standards for the professional practice of veterinary nurses across Australia. This will complement the Accredited Veterinary Nurse Scheme (AVN) which was set up with the support of the National Industry Advisory Group for Veterinary Nursing and the AVA, to recognise excellence in Veterinary Nursing.Veterinary nurses are an integral part of modern veterinary practice. The registration, quality training, and continuing professional development of veterinary nurses are essential components of practice.'

This week has been about creating more awareness for the important work nurses do across their diverse roles, and will be celebrated tomorrow with the annual appreciation day.

❤️ Meet our fabulous Junior Nurse Paige! ❤️

Paige is our newest member of Nepean mobile vet and is always happy to crack a joke with you. She joined the team in December 2023 working as a casual employee. She is still currently completing her certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing and has done volunteering at a number of clinics. Paige loves all animals and is very easily distracted by cows. She loves to learn and is excited at all the opportunities that NMV is bringing her. Paige is a mum of 1 psychotic kelpie x cattle dog who keeps her on her feet 24/7. When she isn’t working at the vets she is either at her other job waitressing, or out exploring and adventuring somewhere. Paige loves camping, motorbike riding, reading, and working on her car.

Favourite animals: Cows, Quokka’s, and dogs.
One thing I love about my job: Doggy cuddles and seeing pus sq**rt out from a cyst or abscess + learning new things about livestock animals.
Something you wouldn’t know about me: In my free time when I’m not at the vets I’m working on my car, riding motorbikes or camping. I’ve also worked at a cafe for 11 years.

💜 Meet our vibrant Senior Nurse Megan!! 💜

With her bright hair and a wicked sense of humor, she’s always ready with a dad joke and loves snapping selfies with any pet willing to pose. Megan joined our team casually in late 2020 and took on a permanent role in late 2021.

She completed her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in 2011, is a Registered Vet Nurse, and has recently become one of the industry's newest Accredited Vet Nurses. Her experience spans three small animal clinics, fostering for a local rescue group, volunteering at a Wildlife Park, and even spending time at the Adelaide Zoo during her Certificate IV studies.

At Nepean Mobile Vet, Megan has developed a passion for large animals (especially goats) and continues to care for a diverse range of species. At home, she’s a busy mum to two young children, two cats, a greyhound (who is basically a giant cat), two guinea pigs, and an Electus Parrot. When she’s not working or managing her bustling household, Megan enjoys reading, building Lego, anything Disney, walking her greyhounds, gym, and catching up over coffee.

Favourite animals: Capybara, Pygmy Marmosets and Bin Chickens!
One thing I love about my job: a decent goat or cow abscess
Something you wouldn't know about me: I took a short break from Vet Nursing a few years ago and was a successful Body Piercer, and I have 10 tattoos!

WHAT IS A VETERINARY NURSE?

A veterinary nurse is a trained professional who assists veterinarians in providing care to animals. Their roles often include:

Patient Care: Monitoring the health of animals, administering medications, and providing basic nursing care.
Assisting in Procedures: Helping with surgeries, dental cleanings, and diagnostic tests.
Client Education: Informing pet owners about animal care, nutrition, and preventive health measures.
Laboratory Work: Conducting tests, analyzing samples, and maintaining laboratory equipment.
Administrative Duties: Managing appointments, handling medical records, and sometimes managing inventory.

Veterinary nurses play a vital role in the animal healthcare industry and often have a deep compassion for animals and their well-being.

In Australia, veterinary nurses often start with a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, which provides foundational knowledge and skills. After that, they can pursue a Diploma of Veterinary Nursing to specialize in areas like anaesthesia, emergency and critical care, or behaviour.

Joining the Veterinary Nurse Council of Australia (VNCA) as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) is a great way to enhance their credentials and professional standing. Additionally, they can seek Accreditation, which recognizes their advanced skills and commitment to ongoing professional development. This pathway allows veterinary nurses to deepen their expertise and provide even better care for animals.

✨️ Patient Spotlight ✨️

Today we had the pleasure of meeting Finn, he is an almost 10 year old St Bernard! We were called out to assist his owner with managing his arthritis. According to his owner, Finn was always a very anti-social dog at a young age, and now he can't get enough cuddles. He's a very loved part of his family, and we can definitely see why.

Pictured is our amazing junior Nurse Paige having a good ol snuggle 🥰

🪱 Livestock owners, beware! 🪱

With the unexpected onset of warmer weather, we've seen a few cases of suspected intestinal parasite infestations, Barber's Pole is on the prowl!
Heavy worm burdens can cause anaemia (white membranes), ill-thrift and often sudden death in sheep, goats and alpacas.
Effective parasitic management requires regular faecal egg counts (about every 3 months) and where possible, paddock rotation to control pasture contamination.

Its time for some worm-counting fun and paddock-rotating adventures - your sheep 🐑 goat 🐐 and alpaca tummies will thank you! 😄

Euthanasia is never easy. It takes its toll on everyone, including all of our team. Today we said goodbye to one of our own. Mischief certainly lived up to her name, and will be sorely missed around the office. Fly high across that rainbow bridge little one.

✨️ Patient Spotlight ✨️

Meet Mathilde...

Mathilde is a 2yo Newfoundland and is the biggest bundle of floof you'll ever meet!
We had the pleasure of visiting Mathilde recently for her yearly vaccinations and check up, but to also catch up after she had to have an eye removed. Sadly, Mathilde was diagnosed with primary Glaucoma by an Eye Specialist and her best option was surgical removal.

We are pleased to say though that she has done amazing in her recovery with the help of her dedicated and loving hoomans, and her teeny tiny BFF Walter (if you look closely, you'll see his teeny tiny little face under that big gorgeous head). Mathilde's mum told us that Walter didn't leave her side during her recovery after surgery.

We think they're the cutest pair 🥰

17/07/2024

As some of you may already be aware, on July 1st the Office of Local Government made significant changes to the PetRegistry website and how microchipped litters will now be entered into the database.

The previous P1A Permanent Identification Form and C3A Change of Owner/ Details Form are no longer accepted as these have been changed also. These can be found on the PetRegistry website https://www.petregistry.olg.nsw.gov.au/registration-and-permit-fees/forms

It is now required that ALL pet dogs and cats are to be registered on the NSW PetRegistry website after the animal is microchipped, and 12 weeks from DOB or on the day of ownership transfer.

This has caused some teething issues for us as the OLG made the changes but didn't make anyone aware of them, so bear with us whilst we are learning these new changes and how best to continue our streamlined litter appointments.

For anyone who is booking in for a litter to be microchipped, it would significantly aid us if you could create a litter profile PRIOR to your appointment with us in order to make the appointment go quicker and easier for all.

You can create a litter here --> https://www.petregistry.olg.nsw.gov.au/breeders/create-a-litter-profile

As always, thanks for your patience and continued support.

Yes, we offer nail trims 😹

Yesterday, Dr Derek and Nurse Megan had the pleasure of accompanying Dr Rob Zammit on a visit to Zambi Wildlife Retreat for a nail trim... on a Lion!!

Our gorgeous patient was 21yr old Jaya, and just like elderly domestic cats, her nails (or should we say claws) were becoming a little overgrown and unable to shed properly so she needed an expert pedicure 💅

Nurse Megan had fun checking out her giant toe beans 🐾 and keeping a souvenir, whilst Dr Derek was all for the hands on physical examination.

Did you know?
Lions have the loudest roar of all big cats with it being heard up to 8 kilometres away! 🦁

What do I do if I find a stray Animal? Different situations require different types of help.
* Stray dog(not sick/injured).Call your local council for pick up or get the dog scanned for a microchip.
* Stray dog (sick/injured). Call the RSPCA or Animal Welfare League for assistance. A vet hospital can render first aid, pain relief or humane euthanasia if necessary, but the dog will still be transported to RSPCA or AWL for further treatment. Legally a vet hospital can only go so far with treatment without an owners permission.
*Stray cat (not sick/injured). Currently, all cats are free to roam and councils are not obliged to take them in. Any welfare agency, vet clinic or private identifiers can scan for a microchip. If no owner can be found, then its best to put the cat back approx where you found it. More than likely will be owned by a neighbour.
*Stray cat (sick/injured). Same as stray dog sick/injured.
*Stray kittens/dumped. Please reach out to recue groups or pages for help. They are also swamped with animals and will help if they can. There are very many reputable groups.
*Rossmore Vets is a separate entity to the 3 Council Animal Shelters to the rear of the hospital. If you have any enquiries regarding, rehoming, lost dogs, or impounded dogs, please contact your local council, NOT Rossmore Vets.
* We love to support many approved welfare groups here at our hospital to help Stray animals and support their carers in doing their important work.
However, we will not tolerate our staff being abused in relation to these matters.

Sharing post from another Vet...

✨️ PLEASE READ✨️
Working with any animal presents its own set of potential dangers, ranging from minor scratches to more severe injuries like shown in this post from another Vet. Unfortunately this poor guy sustained a head injury working with a cow! We hope he's feeling better soon.

This is why we always ask livestock owners to ensure that they have the appropriate crush facilities in place for when we visit their properties, it is to ensure everybody's safety including that of the animal. All crush facilities should be in appropriate working order, so if you haven't checked yours in awhile, now might be a good time to have a quick once over 👀 Animals can be unpredictable at times and it only takes a quick second for an injury to occur.

Our staff have the right to refuse a visit if there is not appropriate facilities available when working with large animals.
