A great food source, excellent for teeth and changes their environment into a fun centre.

ok I would of liked this to be a far more detailed or visual post, however, ideas come and then they go - p**f disappear - cardboard boxes, with a hole cut out for access to a hidy or house, are something that we can quickly utilise to create something to place in our guineas environment for something new, different and interesting, for them to investigate and then eventually throw out - now not only can we give our guineas something new and interesting but here is something we can suggest to our children to keep them occupied and excited about ..........
We have the cardboard box - mix up a paste of half a cup of flour to a cup of water in a bowl to make a glue and with a brush get the kids to coat the box in this paste - next they can cover with hay or chaff to the box, let dry and then place in the cage - adds a difference to an ordinary box and the guineas will be excited to pick the hay off and investigate, our children will be excited as they have created something on their own guineas will love - another great stimulation activity. How exciting!

Guinea Pigs have a highly developed sense of smell. Their whiskers around their nose, eyes and ears are also very sensitive.
This is another photo sent to me of how this awesome mum in another area of her guineas cage, has used a simple hairclip to hang parsley - it is great for guineas to have to use one of their senses to smell and sniff out various foods placed around their cage and in this case also have to use their hind legs to reach up to be able to devour the whole bunch. Parsley is full of vitamins and minerals and I have yet to meet a guinea who doesn't love this awesome herb.

This beautiful guinea gave her wonderful family a terrific surprise one morning with the delivery of 3 fat, healthy baby girls, they believed that their very much loved 2 guinea pigs were both females. Dad has been seperated and now has a new male companion - this excellent Mum will be with her babies forever 🙂 in a new big C&C cage.
It is my privilege to be able to share this video, showing this magnificent Mum with her babies, loving and using one of their many burrowing bags from - Gold Coast Guinea Pigs - you too can purchase Burrowing Bags for $10 each to give your guineas a cosy, warm, dark, secure, spacious place to have their naps and hide out in. Reversible and machine washable.

Can Guinea Pigs eat Iceberg Lettuce?
The answer to this question is yes as long as it is part of a balanced diet, it does have a high water content - not only is it refreshing in our hot summers, guinea pigs love it. Remember, when feeding vegetables and fruit - balance and variety is key.

A little bit of History
Those of us who have guinea pigs appreciate their amazing characters and the fact that they bring us all alot of joy. They are very interesting and make fantastic family pets. Interestingly, the domestic variety is not found naturally in the wild but have descended from a closely related species found in South America. This species lives on grassy plains in small herds and make their homes in the burrows of others. They come out at dusk and dawn to avoid predators. They were first domesticated and eaten 😪 by Andean tribes. They were also worshipped and can be found featured in statues dating back 2500 years ago.

An awesome guinea pig Mum, sent me this photo, of one of the ways she is motivating, giving her young guinea pigs exercise and how she offers food in different ways to give her very much loved piggies an exciting variety of food delivery to help relieve boredom. This is a very simple idea, but very stimulating physically and mentally. As you can see they certainly rose to the challenge.
I will be posting another great idea in a day or so, that this wonderful Mum has shared - stay tuned ......

Did you know? Guinea pigs eat their own poo! 💩 Just like rabbits and chinchillas.

Once your guinea pigs consume their food, their body separates this in to two different types of fibre, digestible and indigestible fibre.

The indigestible fibre is responsible for keeping the gut moving and stimulating appetite as it passes through their body to form a dropping.

The digestible fibre is sent to the caecum (which is bigger version of our appendix), which is where all the nutrients are extracted and passed through as a sticky/soft dropping (caecotroph) and this is meant to be eaten by your small furry to absorb even more nutrients. - Gross I know! But very beneficial!

Often, the sticky dropping can be mistaken for diarrhoea which is not the case. Diarrhoea occurs when all the droppings are of that sort. Seek the advice of your vet if you are unsure!

I hope everyone is keeping dry and safe in this horrible weather. As any projects are restricted to indoors at present, yesterday I made a house that was easily put together with C&C grids and zip ties - as you can see there is a space underneath and a higher up level, most adult guineas would be able to access the second level without a ramp. I have cut out a piece of corflute 34.5cm X 34.5cm to place on the top level. This design could even be incorporated into a corner of your C&C setup. In the next couple of days I will be updating this with a comfy absorbent pad, curtains and some hanging decorations - there are plenty of options to make this interesting.
