As the girls are happily putting up the tree and Christmas decorations, I thought it might be a good time to give all of our a "life on the ranch" update.
After a slow start to the year while I recovered from multiple surgeries, more recently things have been progressing really well and each day we get a little closer to our goal of living a self sufficient, self reliant lifestyle.
The dogs are all doing well. Although we all miss El dearly, her absence has left the rest of the pack in a noticeably quieter and calmer state. We are eager to breed both Koko and Batty but I still haven't resolved our ongoing registration predicament and need to source a suitable stud.
The sheep are doing great. We are praying that our young stud rams have been able to service our stunning flock of ewes and the wethers continue to fatten up nicely, won't be to much longer before they start making their trips to the freezer. Thanks to our irrigation licences we still have some ok feed on the ground but the sheep are also helping us prepare the expansion of the garden beds atm while also getting to munch on some premium local hay.
On the gardens, things have still been a bit hit and miss even with the addition of the new sprinkler system. Some things, like the taro, cassava, kumera, berry vines, potatoes and sunflowers are going great guns, while the tomatoes, strawberries, rhubarb and cucumbers seem to be a losing battle with pests and diseases, but it's all part of the learning process. The corn seems like it's going to be a dud too so I will probably attempt to turn it into winter silage for the sheep.
The orchard is a similar story to the gardens, with some trees growing like crazy and already producing fruit, while others are still struggling to overcome the rough start they had to life last summer, but none have died so that's a plus.
We have recently finished a few other projects too, such as the new sheep stables, a large scale worm farm, a duckweed garden and upgrades to Cluckingham Palace. The chickens have become an unexpected but much loved addition to our daily routines, along with the quails, so we have eggs coming out the w***o, which has created many opportunities to share our blessings with friends, neighbours and our church congregation which we are very thankful for.
Finally (that I can think of for now lol) I just did a beekeepers course and we now have our second (first captive colony) beehive to help with pollination and provide us with honey! I will be transferring them into their permant hive on Thursday, then once they are settled and established I will finally attempt to move our resident wild colony out of the wall and into a hive too!
That's all for now, it's been a busy year and that trend will only continue come 2024! Thanks for taking the time to read all of this and feel free to ask any questions!
Cheers from the Buckshot Ranch family!

Breaks our hearts to announce that we have said goodbye to our beautiful girl El.
She had been very sick with kidney failure and was going to be pts on Monday, but she went peacefully and very serendipitously today instead.
She was a fiercely protective and fiercely loving dog. A Boerboel through and through.
El-Alamein, born on ANZAC Day, passed on Rememberance Day. Our first pup we kept from our first litter, we will always remember you!

Another beautiful day on the ranch.

Poor Alfie has been doing it pretty tough, couped up in his enclosure for weeks while all our bi***es cycle through their heats, so he was very happy to stretch his legs and have a good run/play with a dried up Sonja today during a break in the weather.

This is why the Boerboel exist.

Well as if 9 dogs isnt already enough to look after, meet number 10 😭😑😭😑😭
Technically Hector belongs to our next door neighbours but between him being very lonely (his only other friend is a goat), some crappy fences and an owner who doesnt care, he pretty much lives in our yard everyday! He is a pretty cool pup and most of ours our chill with him so we dont mind that much, especially considering he is going to be a big boy when hes grown, but it does get pretty annoying at times. We have been waiting a couple of months now for our fences to be replaced due to all the rain but even then, without the neighbour taking this more seriously we could be in for some rough times once Hector is sexually mature and our girls are in heat.
*Sorry for the video, no idea why its sideways.

⚑BIG CHANGES COMING SOON!⚑

Apologies to all our followers for how quiet our social media has been for a while but thats because things definitely have not been quiet here in real life!
Between works on the property, our growing girls and all the dogs (plus the crappy weather) We have been absolutely flat out this year but its all been working towards our master plan for Buckshot Ranch so its incredibly rewarding to finally see all that hard yakka starting to pay off!
Its still too early to announce, but yesterday we took an important first step in the next part of the Buckshot journey and if all goes to plan on friday then we will have some massive announcements to make very soon so STAY TUNED!!!
Exciting times ahead at Buckshot RanchπŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘§πŸ•?

Kristy has worked out a pretty clever way of playing fetch with Alfie while overcoming the need to get it from him and throw the slobery ball 🀣🀣🀣

Batty is looking better every day, around 10 months, slowly growing out of the ugly lanky stage.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and wishing you all a very happy and prosperous new year! We've had a busy time and I needed to take a break from FB for a bit but everything is doing well here at Buckshot. The weather has been pretty full on for the last few weeks so Kenya and the kids are certainly enjoying the break from flooding storms or scorching hot days and making the most of this nice change. Heres hoping youve had better run so far this summer and our thoughts go to those who've been effected by the floods.

Im honestly not sure why because I can hardly fault this girl, but after a deal falling through and way to many tire kickers than I want to acknowledge, we still have this beautiful pup with us. She is 10 weeks, has had her second shots, is ready to go asap and I know she would love a new family to share christmas with!

Was nice to be able to have a real pup handover and goodbye again after so long! Ms J was a real standout so we are very happy that she will only be a stones throw away at the Dreamtime Boerboels crew and we can watch her develop. Hope she has settled in ok Brenden and Teegan and thanks again for Red.

Week 6 update. What a big day for the pups! This morning they went on their first big adventure to see the vets and get microchipped and their first needles! They handled it great and the Vets were very happy with their development. All 7 are noticeably growing more every day, both in size and personality.

5 week update! All the pups are doing great and are developing really well! They are smashing down meat and kibble and only have a few comfort feeds left with Kenya before they are fully weaned. Their little personalities are also starting to shine through and we definitely have a nice mix of characters within the litter. Ive posted a video of all the girls for those that have been enquiring, please feel free to PM us if you have any questions, cheers.

Unbelievably relieved to have these two boneheads home and back to their usuall crazy selves! Its pretty amazing to see Koko so normal now considering 24hrs ago I was holding her almost lifeless body in my arms as I said my goodbyes. Yesterday was a very full on and emotional experience but we are all just happy that everyone is ok now and I will look back at this as another learning experience on our breeding journey.
Also must give a huge shoutout and thanks to all the staff at Leeton Veterinary Hospital for their amazing emergency response and care in saving our girls!

Koko and Prancer have both just been bitten by a brown snake. We got them to the vet very quickly and theyve had antivenom so please cross your fingers they both pull through, although Koko is not in a good way. FML 😭

Has been a busy week keeping up with these little crackers. They hit 4 weeks old and have had their first tastes of solid mush and are venturing outside now as well. All growing and developing nicely, I will post some pics of the girls below. Feel free to PM us if you have any questions.
