NO POWER!?! Apologies to those who are trying to get through to us at the moment. We were impacted by the bad storms that have been happening in Melbourne and are still operating without power and proper phone reception (and we don't have an ETA for normalcy to return). All the birds are fine, but obviously we are inundated with requests for help for lost/found birds. As you can probably appreciate, without working refrigerators, feeding fresh food is challenging and we're working harder than normal just to keep up.
Messages are slow to come through but we're doing our best to respond. Please be patient!

See if you can guess what this is before reading further.

I’ll give some clues. It’s mostly made of cotton fibres with a bit of silverbeet in there. It’s a bit smelly so you don’t want to lean in too close. And it was removed by an avian vet.

If you guessed crop impaction, you’re correct. I know these posts go up often, but we hope to save as many lives as we can by education. It is so common for us to point out cotton hazards and the families tell us their bird doesn’t chew the rope, happy hut, blanket….but if they ever catch them, they will remove the item. I can tell you from experience, people never notice. The bird only has to take in a few fibres a day to slowly build a mass in the crop. The cotton fibres are not digestible so they just sit in the crop slowly amassing. The bird that this came out of, had been taking in fibres from a warm blanket covering the cage at night. There was absolutely no indication anywhere on the blanket that he had been chewing. No one ever caught him in the act. This bird was lucky that the mass was detected and could be removed. Often birds with a crop impaction will get sick from an infection in the crop due to the impaction or they will die of starvation as nothing can get through to the stomach.

Please don’t take risks and “remove when you see it becoming a problem”! You likely won’t see it coming and it’s not worth the risk. Avoid cotton products around your birds.

Vomiting or regurgitation?!

We often have people questioning whether their bird is vomiting or regurgitating. In the pictures below is an easy sign. If you find your bird with its head covered in a mucus like this cockatiel, you know your bird has been vomiting whether you caught him in the act or not. Vomiting is projectile. They often swirl their head and neck around and food or mucus comes flying out, often getting lots of it on their head. Vomiting is always a cause for concern and a vet appointment should be booked urgently. There are many reasons birds vomit and you should consult with an avian vet on the possible causes. A few of the many possibilities are ingesting something toxic, metal toxicity, crop impaction, crop infection, liver/kidney disease, megabac (AGY), and other possible diseases.

Regurgitation is generally a gentle placement of seed or food on to a loved item or person. This will not result in mucus covering the head.

WARNING!!!! URGENT!!!! Parts of Melbourne are being affected by toxic smoke due to a large factory fire in Derrimut. Smoke is never good for birds but this is a particularly large chemical fire that is significantly dangerous. Please take steps to protect your birds by bringing them inside if possible. If you have birds that are in outdoor aviaries, consider shielding those aviaries with wet sheets/blankets or even use a misting system to help trap smoke particles. See the attached article for more air quality tips.

A planned burn in the Dandenongs, Victoria, Australia. It doesn’t look it to the untrained eye, but this actually a controlled fire. Firefighters do these burns to reduce fuel load to reduce the risk of serious bushfire. The smoke blankets numerous suburbs when they do this. Occasionally something...

Help Needed! Hoping to try to find someone working that way or on the end of their holiday who can help transport this urgent case.

Transport has been sorted, thank you to everyone who has contacted us! We'll be putting up a post tomorrow about this budgie's journey.

---

Transport Needed!

We're looking for anyone who happens to be in the Warrnambool area, who can transport this little budgie to us before Friday. They need to see an avian vet, and the sooner, the better.

The plan is for them to be seen by an avian vet, and then go into temporary care until we reopen our doors for intakes.

If anyone can assist, please send us a direct message!

Please read and be aware.

Often in rescue we need a little pick me up as it can be a roller coaster of emotions. Today, we had these little rays of sunshine come visit from Works for Birds. You can’t help but smile watching them waddle through the grass, nibbling, and wagging their cute little tails.

Why does Kiwi’s New Life Bird Rescue not have a catalog???

We at the rescue feel very strongly that a picture never does a bird justice. Each bird has their own unique interests and personality. We can describe to you what their personality is like with us, but it may vary in different environments and with different people. We want people to come in with an open mind and spend time talking to different birds. Sometimes a shy bird may take a liking to a person or family and out of the blue start cooing, flirting, talking, or stepping up when they have never displayed those behaviour before. There are also lots of shy birds that if given the chance to bond with you over time, will be the best bird you could ever imagine. TikTok, fb, and Instagram cute birds don’t emphasise enough that the behaviours you see and like, are behaviours that developed over time through forming strong bonds. The bonds were not instant. The creators of those videos spent time earning their trust and building those bonds. With lots of out of cage time, healthy diet, and positive interactions and training you too can build a strong bond with your bird.

If you are interested in giving a bird a home, consider adoption. Send us a pm to set up a time to come in and meet the birds.
