G2 treadmill @70km/h
Sometimes it is still tempting for the founder of #horsegym to have a play with the latest toys in the workshop... The G2 treadmill (special edition) is definitely setting new technology (and safety!) boundaries on equine training equipment used for performance assessment.
Among other areas, this type of treadmill can be used to perform endoscopy on thoroughbred horses. The treadmill allows the user/vet to examine the upper airway of an equine athlete while it is exercising at high speed.
This type of dynamic evaluation is very useful in determining if the horse has an upper airway abnormality affecting performance. There are certain abnormalities of the upper airway that only become evident during high-intensity exercise and will not be seen during a resting endoscopic evaluation. The examination has to be tailored to the type of work and the level of fitness for each horse, mimicking the speed and distance that the horse typically works on the track. The endoscopic examination is recorded and evaluated in slow motion so that subtle abnormalities are identified.

Horse treadmills & animal welfare - humanity is paramount!
Even before recent events hit the media, the overall topic of animal welfare and safety is critical and accompanies us every day in what we do and want to achieve.
The management and improvement of the physical condition of thousands of horses over a 25+ year period is proof that our equine training equipment delivers results.
According to figures appearing in the Equine Veterinary Journal, treadmill equipment exercise is not a significant source of serious injury to horses.
Reporting on a study conducted in Australia, head researcher Samantha Franklin, B.V.Sc., concluded that, in general, treadmill exercise is considered effective and safe. After examining 2,305 records from 2,258 horses working on high-speed equine treadmills at nine locations in three countries, the study found an injury rate of 5.4%, which is what one would expect during average strenuous competition. Fewer than 1% of injuries were classified as serious.
The horses fault? Unsafe equipment?
Though most treadmill or water treadmill operation carries very little risk of injury, the most pivotal variable regarding safe operation is dependent on the operator.
"Using the variables" (speed, water-level, incline, time) correctly to adjust intensity of training is at the operator's discretion.
The right mix of professional instruction from the manufacturer, building up user experience (without taking shortcuts; appreciating the steep learning curve involved) and guidelines from vets are by all means more important than any technical safety feature on any training equipment.
We won't make the call that unforeseen circumstances or so called "freak-accidents" can be avoided altogether, but putting training equipment into the hands of an inexperienced individual or with ill intentions could potentially tarnish the immense benefits of our products, not to mention how others perceive sport & industry.

Horse Gym Hydrotherapy Equipment Filtration Technology
What makes a great equine water treadmill or spa?
Press βΆοΈ ... and off you go! Every day. 365 days a year. Hassle-free.
Whenever water and manure come together, pristine crystal clear (salt) water turns green and murky. You haven't been told you need to clean your filter regularly? You haven't been told you should have done an apprenticeship in plumbing? You haven't been told that your monthly expenses on filter consumables are more than a truck load of hay bales from WA? You should have asked!
Whether you own a fancy water treadmill with windows or just a plain stainless steel box, the shiny surface is quickly compromised when your filtration system is not up to standard.
Horse Gym's fully automated back flush filtration system allows you to focus on horses, not cleaning! Providing consistently high water quality as well as minimal manual involvement in the maintenance of the system. Having said that, if you hold a Certificate III in Plumbing that's totally fine!

Treadmill training vs bone structure development in young horses.
HOW IS THE BONE RESPONDING TO TREADMILL TRAINING?
In summary, most scientific studies looking at repsonses of bone to treadmill training are generally favourable. One study (Firth, 2006) reported that modelling of both the radial and third carpal bone occured in young Thoroughbreds undergoing treadmill exercise. In this study - which lasted 18 months - 2-year-olds which were galloped on the treadmill 3 times per week and reported that the third carpal bone of trained horses had a thicker cortical shell, a thickening of the trabeculaem resulting in an increasedbone mass and mineral density compared to the controls.
Whitton (1999) also reported that treadmill training resulted in modelling of the subchondral bones of the carpus. On the other hand, there was no significant effect on subchondral bone of the third and central tarsal bones.
Please contact us if you are interested in guidelines or treadmill programms in particular for young horses with their bone structure still under development.

T4 Speed Plus - Pre-training the whole year round.
Effective & safe. Pre-training with the T4 Speed Plus is not just a plan-B for winter. #horsetreadmills in general are ideal for controlled exercise. They have the advantage that the horse works in a straight line and without the weight of a rider on its back = less weight & stress.
This is a perfect combination as it has been shown that bone density usually decreases during the first few weeks of training. The same concept applies to the tendon. Therefore both tissues are very vulnerable to injury during the periods of early prep-work. Consequently the tready provides the ideal mechanism of being able to deliver the training stimulus needed to obtain the desired increases in fitness without the added stress of the jockey/rider on their back, thereby not putting additional stress on their bones and tendons. On top, #horsetreadmill exercise can be used to settle horses that have a tendency to pull and horses that are prone to back problems.
