๐Ÿ’ฏ Symmetry matters ๐Ÿ’ฏ

Sloppy sits show up a lot in clinical practice. Some of the reasons include puppyhood, joint health issues or after orthopaedic surgery when range of motion is reduced so the following info doesnโ€™t apply.

But in a normal musculoskeletal system, a dog should be able to sit & maintain correct form when asked.

Using this as an observational tool gives you an opportunity to check how your dogs rear legs are moving. Then in their own time they can relax & sit how they like ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿถ

Bad habits sometimes creep in & over time create a muscular system that is asymmetrical. This causes a shift in the skeletal system leading to the asymmetrical loading on joints, ligaments, tendons etc. This increases the likelihood of injury โŒ๐Ÿ˜ต

If you want to improve your dogs sit and get them working their rear legs more evenly, find a narrow platform & practice your sit cue. Aim for 5-10 reps at a time.

As Barley demonstrates in this video, the narrow base of support encourages more correct placement of her rear legs.

When the skeletal and muscular system work together harmoniously, joints are moved correctly within their plane of movement reducing the risk of injury in the future ๐Ÿ’›โœŒ๐Ÿผ

Dogs are pros at hiding pain ๐Ÿฅน

Let this statement settle into your bones!!!

You wouldnโ€™t believe how common it is to hear owners report that their dog isnโ€™t in pain because they do not hear them vocalise with a yelp.

Letโ€™s be on the front foot with this & pay attention to the subtle signs.

Our dogs are always communicating with us via their movement, body language & behaviour.

So letโ€™s listen & learn ๐Ÿค—

๐Ÿ‘€ Physio eyes ๐Ÿ‘€

Have you ever heard the expression โ€˜Once you see it, you canโ€™t unsee itโ€™?

Working in rehab, our eyes are trained not only to see dysfunction but also the effect a problem in one area causes in others.

It is not possible to diagnose and grade a luxating patella by sight alone. We need to passively examine the knee & perform gait assessments too.

But can you see the poor sit & secondary postural adjustments that are happening here?

Dogs have to compensate for pain just like we do ๐Ÿคฏ

Let me know your thoughts on this ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅTop Tip ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Donโ€™t wait until your dog is older or injured to get them used to a ramp.

Seniors usually have impaired balance & co-existing issues which can make inclines tricky unless they have practiced them before.

Practicing on a ramp when younger can be fun & really gets those hind leg muscles fired up. This is a great little conditioning exercise for dogs at home.

A huge thank you to Caylin & Flower ๐Ÿ˜‡ forever part of our TDWC family who kindly donated this ramp to the centre ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

๐Ÿ“š Read your dog ๐Ÿ“š

This is important & can be applied to a variety of settings such as vets & groomers.

Our dogs are unique & are always communicating with us. Some dogs are outgoing, others less so.

So pay attention & make adjustments if necessary.

I often give breaks to new dogs during consults so as not to cause overwhelm.

Has your dog ever been overwhelmed?

๐Ÿ’กCheck your dog ๐Ÿ’ก

Here's a tip which explains one of the ways you can assess & monitor your dogs weight at home ๐Ÿก ๐Ÿพ

Let's all get more familiar with our dog's ideal & ask your vet for guidance if you're unsure about your pets waistline as some dogs will naturally have more skin than others.

Leaner dogs live longer- Fact ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผ

There is scientific evidence to back this up so let's use that to our advantage as we care for our dogs ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’›

โš ๏ธโš ๏ธ Non slip โš ๏ธโš ๏ธ

Folks, I take histories from many owners & a common thing we discuss is home flooring.

Those beautiful polished floorboards/concrete/tiles can make life tricky for senior dogs.

Frequent slips, trips & falls can cause unnecessary pain ๐Ÿ˜–

Rugs, runners & yoga mats make a big difference with less reliance on pain meds and non steroidal anti-inflammatories for flare ups.

Simple ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

๐Ÿ˜ญ Sad realisation ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Every day when Iโ€™m out & about I canโ€™t help but notice the types of gear people have on their dogs. And Iโ€™m sad to say there are lots of poorly designed harnesses affecting comfort & quality of movement.

I believe if proactive owners know more, they will make better decisions. Thatโ€™s why we put so much effort into educating you on this topic ๐Ÿ’œ

So if you have a harness thatโ€™s similar in shape to the ones in this reel it might be time to consider a new wardrobe.

Stand back and look at your dog in their gear. Does their posture change when you put on their harness? ๐Ÿค”

Do they run from you when they see the harness in your hands? If so, they might be communicating with you ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ ๐Ÿพ

Find your dogโ€™s scapula by touch (weโ€™ve got reels on our grid showing the anatomy of this region) and then look where the straps of your harness sits. Do they restrict free movement of the shoulders and forelimbs? If so, itโ€™s not an ideal design.

I feel we need to keep the conversation going about correct fit as there is not much clear or correct advice around harness use.

Bottom line, ill fitting & poorly made harnesses cause pain & restrict movement in dogs ๐Ÿ˜ตโŒ

For those of you wondering, a properly fitted & well manufactured Y shaped harness allows for most comfort around a dog's shoulder. This goes for most regular shaped dogs ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿพ

However there can be a variety of reasons why they might or other types of gear may not suit every dog so ask a trusted professional for specific advice about your dogs situation โœŒ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜Ž

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ Helpful tip ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Caspian ๐Ÿ‘‘ came to see us & we found some stiff areas in his neck.

It's important to know that the muscles in this area are constantly working to support the head against gravity so they are prone to tension especially in an aging dog.

So taking time to release this area is really beneficial & a nice way to spend time with your best friend.

Start with a light pincer grip in front of your dogs shoulder. Then slowly work your way up towards the ear.

Keep your pressure light & ensure your dog is relaxed & enjoying the massage.

If they show any signs of discomfort, stop & ask your vet to check this area for pain on your next visit ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

๐Ÿ‘€ Inspect your harness ๐Ÿ‘€

Here's a little video of Pearl assessing Montys harness.

It turns out that his harness was not doing him any favours in terms of comfort and actually contributing to his sore neck because the neck strap was too tight โŒ ๐Ÿ˜–

It's important to check your dogs harness and ensure it does not restrict natural movement of the shoulders or push on any pressure points in their muscles.

We have a few posts on how to choose a correct harness for your dog- Be sure to check em out! Remember its not about brand- its about what fits your dogs specific shape and needs but for most regular shaped dogs- a well fitting Y shaped harness allows for good movement and comfort.

โ€ผ๏ธ Pain alert โ€ผ๏ธ

We know there is a common trend amongst this community- that everyone loves their pets & wants them to live long happy livesโ€ฆright?

And we are trying to raise awareness about the importance of well made, properly fitted gear in dogs. We are not anti-harness. But there is a lot of mis information out there regarding use & type.

Sadly in-spite of many ownerโ€™s best intentions, there are dogs wearing crap harnesses every day. And this has consequences for their long term health.

Phrases like โ€œno pullโ€ or โ€œvet approvedโ€ gives pet owners false & misguided hopes for products that actually cause pain โŒ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ

Although we have used different dogs in this reel, I wanted to show the consequences in anatomical terms of pressure from a poorly designed harness resulting in painful trigger points in the tricep muscle which is being dry needled in the second photo.

Food for thought ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ˜ต๐Ÿ˜–

โŒ Hip Dysplasia โŒ

This condition pops up frequently at the centre.

It's a deformity of the hip joint that occurs during growth which causes pain & impaired leg use.

In the early stages, it can be overlooked meaning that some dogs mask the signs of discomfort & owners arenโ€™t sure what to look for. Sadly, some of the milder signs even get missed at vet visits ๐Ÿ˜ข

Here's some symptoms you can stay vigilant for & if unsure, ask your vet to have a feel of your dogs hips at their next visit ๐Ÿฉบ

This is an oldie but a goodie!

It works the muscles that support the spine along with targeting the legs so itโ€™s a great all rounder ๐Ÿคฉ

Start with a low pole & get your dog to wrap the cones as tightly as possible.

Practice first at a walk and ensure there is no hopping or skipping movements.

Oldies best to stay slow & steady. Young ones can go over raised poles at a faster speed as long as they maintain good form & quality of movement ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

You can swap out the cones for any stable house hold objects you can find & use a broom ๐Ÿงน to step over.

If you're looking to treat your dog and invest in a decent set cones and poles, check out our amazon store in our linktree.
