Yes this. π simple rule when out in public with your dog. 1. Keep it under effective control and on leash at all times, especially if you do not have effective recall. 2. Regardless of the breed you own and its size, keep your dog away from strange dogs period unless you ask permission of other owner. Always give space to other people's animals and be respectful.
πΎ An important tip when you have a multidog household. It is so important to keep a strict structure and routine especially around feeding times. All my dogs have been raised to be able to eat their meals around each other with no issues, reason there are no issues is because I run an extremely tight ship when it comes to ensuring everyone's space is respected, especially during feeding time. I will not EVER allow any of my dogs to stare at each other or get curiously close to each other while they are eating. When they are in the same vicinity they can walk by each other without issues and everyone leaves each other alone. None of my dogs feel they need to guard their food around each other as they know the rules and respect the rules and they know I wont allow this to happen. This is done under strict supervision. If they cannot be supervised I will responsibly feed them in separate rooms or crates where they can eat without possibly trying anything cheeky when Im not there. They are animals and animals can be unpredictable when an owner is not present. In a multidog household it's Important to condition dogs to eating together as well as separate, as this eating together in a communal space under supervision helps desensitize and prevent unwanted resource guarding issues down the line. Everything must be controlled without risk to you or your dogs. Dont just throw dogs in an environment without structure and without understanding their temperaments, even if they seem sweet or nice. So much can change when there are high value resources around so make sure you do things carefully and safely and slowly and customize according to the types of dogs and temperaments in your packπΎ

πΎπΆMr Jack the mini doxie learning how to walk well on lead. Start setting rules early with your pups to create good habits later. Even if your pup or dog weighs nothing, concentration and impulse control is still super important. Dont let your dog get away with unwanted behaviour you wouldn't tolerate if it was a large breed. Good manners, good etiquette and respect for rules should apply no matter what size or breed. ππΎ

Rocket doing a sit step away with distraction. Dog parks are not ideal environments for puppies and dogs to socialise, however you can certainly use them in desensitization, distraction training without putting your dog inside at risk. You can stay on the outside of the fence and have your dog observe the other dogs inside, still ensuring you keep a good distance and you can utilize this as a form of distraction and desensitization training safely.

Place training has so many benefits. Little Rocket knows this very well. πThis is a great way to teach impulse control training with your dog or puppy. It teaches them not to just roam around at will and get up to mischief.
If you cannot supervise your puppy/new dog often then id strongly advise place training or crate training as a great way to teach some boundaries and independence. You can also utilise an enclosed puppy pen also.
Place training can be applied anywhere in your home or even when visiting others. Place training typically requires a matt of some sort or carpet square that you can place your dog or pup on anywhere at anytime.
Keep in mind this is different to doing a formal drop command. The difference is when a dog or pup is put in a "place" command they are allowed to move around on that particular spot or bed. This is why i use things like a matt or carpet square or canvas bed where if the dog has to get comfortable or stand up its ok, as long as they do not step one paw off that spot. I call these dogs "lava dogs". π
In a formal drop it involves the dog being in a drop anywhere you wish and the dog cannot crawl, stand, sit or get up in anyway unless told to free. Drop is a lot more formal and has its benefits as well and should still be encouraged in your puppy's/dogs routine.
Applying something like the place command to still teach your dog/puppy impulse control whilst still permitting a little bit more leniency is a great starting point. Both options require a "free" to release from the command. π€πΎπΎ

A good example of controlled, supervised socialization in early stages of puppy hood. No playing is needed, just happy dogs co existing. This is so important to process when socialising puppies, so please dont force interactions with strange dogs on or off lead. Playing with other dogs is ok if dogs have gotten to know each other over a period of time, are stable and understand canine etiquette and also know how to respect each others space when needed. I only use older mentor dogs like my own pack, or trusted clients that know how to communicate and not be pushy, overly excitable or disrespectful with other dogs and will also listen to their owners when told to end interactions. Please don't force your puppies to play or meet strangers. That is not appropriate socialization. Set up your puppy for success not stress.

Supervised socialization with proper canine etiquette is key. Here we have many different breeds of different ages and energy levels hanging out. All trained and under effective control by responsible owners. when you have proper foundations in place with training and your dogs understand how to communicate with good etiquette you get a much happier, safe and respectful environment where everyone's happy. Notice Otto the golden retriever approaching Rook the tamaskan (who can be quite nervous) and Flick the black gsd communicating with her body language to Otto to back off and give Rook space. See how well Otto listened to the cue from her and just distanced himself. This language can only be taught through training and cooperation from both dog and owner. Canine etiquette does not mean dog parks and free for all play with strange dogs. Etiquette does not get taught properly without proper guidance. ππ #canineetiquette #goodtraining #dogsrespectingeachother #packdynamic #frenchie #frenchiesofinstagram #goldenretrieversofinstagram #akitasofinstagram #tamaskansofinstagram #germanshepherdsofinstagram #caucasianshepherdsofinstagram #balanceddogtraining #dogtraining #dogtrainer #dogclients #welltraineddogs #goodmanners
Working on recall today with Rocket man. Its always ideal to teach recall on a leash then build up to a long line. As Rocket is very good with this command I felt confident he would come when called so I took that risk and he nailed it. If you are not sure your puppy will come dont use a formal recall, try using an informal recall instead. This was me taking a risk but I was confident he would come which still made the exercise effective.ππ #recalltraining #formalrecall #bichonfrise #rocketship #goodboy #pupstagram #puppiesofinstagram #bichonfrisesofinstagram #bichonsofinstagram #dogstagram #instapuppies #puppies #puppy #dogs #melbournedogtraining #dogtrainer #happydog #dogtraining #puppydevelopmentprogram #puppytraining #puppyenviro #bichonpuppy

Creating positive experiences for your new puppy is so important especially during those very critical developmental periods. Specifically from 8 weeks to 16 weeks. Every new experience and new environment must have a positive effect on your puppies confidence and nature. You want your pup to grow up bullet proof to the world and know how to handle changes and challenges in life with a quick recovery. Please dont wait till 16 weeks to start this process. Start from 8 weeks but avoid places like dog parks or parks with off lead dogs during those times. Try booking pup into a professional daycare facility run by professional trainer or trainers to ensure good manners and behaviours are taught. πΎπΎ

πΎπΎSo important while socialising puppies to new environments and new experiences that everything is done safely and pup has a positive experience.
Taking a pup out and forcing it to suck up new experiences while its in a flighty, nervous state of mind without working on changing its mindset and going slow is not proper socialisation.
Make sure you are focusing on your pups mindset and dont push it beyond its limits to handle new pressures. You want to ensure it recovers well from new experiences that it might be fearful or nervous about initially. πΎ
Please be patient πΆππΎ
