Focusing on emotional regulation and trauma through horsemanship.

29/12/2023

The time has arrived for me to acknowledge my humanity and recognise that I won't be able to engage in horsemanship activities as I used to. Following my accident in July, where I severely injured my wrist in a farm accident resulting in the shattering of my wrist joint and breaking both bones, it's become evident that my dream of introducing 4 Aces Equine into the horsemanship world won't come to fruition, I will be able to ride and potter around at low level events on my beautiful equine partners so if you see me out and about please feel free to pop up and say Hi. As I say when the universe shows you a door go through it you never know where you may end up, I've gained a new perspective due to this unfortunate incident, leading me alongside my supportive husband and dear friend, to embark on a different and equally fulfilling path.
We've chosen to focus on aiding at-risk kids and teenagers, providing as safe and relaxing environment to offer equine therapy, farm-assisted learning, and short-term respite. This change has granted me the opportunity to utilise my expertise to offer these young individuals a window into the shared emotional experiences of anxiety, depression, and the yearning for acceptance that all living beings, including ourselves often encounter.
In light of this newfound direction, I'll be concluding operations at 4 Aces Equine and dedicating my time and efforts to KKarinya Farm - Vic If you're interested in continuing to follow my journey, I invite you to join me. However, if not, I sincerely wish you a wonderful and fulfilling future with your equine partner. XX I thank you for all your support and following over the past 5 years but 4 Aces Equine will be closed down as of the 31/1/2024 Remember enjoy the ride, its suppose to be fun, Relax and Just breathe. Forever grateful Amanda

Amanda from 4 Aces Equine & Karinya Farm - Vic has been very lucky enough to be selected to be apart of the Raise Foundation’s youth mentoring program. We think youth mental health is important and love that Raise has taken steps to help support the young people of our community.

It isn’t cool anymore 😑⁣

Let’s let the sparkly-eyed wonder toward this die off:⁣

“Training” horses at a rapid pace ⚡️ you know, like starting a c**t to ride in a couple hours, then standing on his back to crack a bullwhip.⁣

There’s this sense of wonder, amazement and respect toward trainers who can get things done FAST…⁣

Meanwhile, the horse is showing every sign of stress (even while doing the desired behavior), like triangulation of the eye, head held high, tension in the body, flared nostrils, snorting, standing frozen, or eyes glazed over.⁣

Sure, the trainer is loping him around dragging a tarp today…⁣

But that doesn’t mean this will be safe or possible in a week.⁣

Because right now?⁣

That horse doesn’t feel safe. He isn’t accepting and relaxed… ⁣

***He’s in a freeze response*** waiting to explode when the moment is right—usually when a less experienced person handles him (or, with extended forceful training, he may shut down long-term, those eyes remaining lifeless and dull).⁣

❌ Don’t be fooled by quick, flashy training⁣

✅ Do understand both the obvious and subtle signs of distress (otherwise known as calming signals)⁣

Speed isn’t impressive. What’s admirable to us is:⁣

🌱 Being *thorough* rather than fast⁣

🌱 Staying below the fear threshold⁣

🌱 The horse feeling relaxed and enthusiastic throughout the session⁣

🌱 Training results last long-term, rather than producing flashy yet fleeting outcomes⁣

🌱 The horse is excited to train again the next day⁣

Training fast (i.e. using force and flooding) is a skill, to be sure… but, we believe it’s less of a skill than training ethically, which requires keen observational skills, enormous amounts of education, empathy, patience, and compassion, at the very least.⁣

Ethical trainers make it look like they just have an “easy” horse. The session won’t have you on the edge of your seat; it’ll be gradual. Peaceful. Relaxed.⁣

And the horse will happily participate ♥️ with an unguarded presence, excitement for what’s next, and a sparkle in his eye ✨⁣

Which do you prefer?⁣

Before a herd paddock you would never put Frankie near another horse he would kick and strike. Now after finding his inner peace in his heard he can now be in a group paddock and ridden next to his herd horses. I love a happy ending. You may ask what we did, I can tell you nothing we put him in a herd paddock with many other horses and let them be horses. They don’t need our help to find their feet, they need us to leave them alone and just let them be. XA ps the pile was knocked down by human not horse 🤣

Rebel and I attended the John Saint Ryan clinic last month and all I can say what an amazing experience it was. Not only did we meet some great horse people but we got to actually meet John Saint Ryan and get some really great tips and some pretty funny jokes!! Did you know we have the same dna as a lettuce??? Well there you go we are all just a bunch of lettuce on top of horses, so stop taking it so seriously it’s supposed to be fun 🤣, you can download Johns audio book on audible which I have listened to many times. Have a great day all and remember to Relax and Just Breathe x

Love that my horses choose to be with me ❤️ building a solid foundation on trust and understanding is better than force and fear.

Had a ripper couple of rides yesterday on Matilda and Daz as a pair and Harry and Apollo. We are very lucky our herds can be ridden safely and happily together no matter the mix. Love a good herd environment that helps our horse mental health and makes them feel confident and comfortable with riding together or even alone.

Yesterday was our first EVER English show. Rebel and I having a crack at jumping and dressage and all I can say is this horse leaves me feeling like a teen again. He is the most beautiful, giving and genuine horse I have ever known. I can’t believe how lucky I am to have him in my herd. When we think of unicorns we think bombproof, quiet and unemotional. Not me I’m looking for that connection the feel and the knowing that you both have each others back and you could fly together, Well my Rebel can be spicy and has an opinion, he is always trying and I love that. Who wouldn’t love a horse that try’s everything and has the ability to keep their cool 90% of the time just so their human can pop over some poles and dance around an arena. A big appreciation post to all those spicy unicorns keep doing you.❤️🦄🌶️
