๐พ๐ถPuppy Worms: What You Need to Know ๐พ๐ถ
๐ How often should you worm a puppy?
๐ถPuppies should be dewormed early on in their lives since they can be born with worms and their immune system is still developing. Typically, they should be treated at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 weeks of age. Once your pup reaches 12 weeks, you can continue treating them every three months with an effective all wormer for life. Also, don't forget to treat the mother dog during mating and before giving birth to prevent passing worms to the puppies.
๐ Types of Worms
Here are some common worms that puppies can get:
๐ซRoundworms: These thin, spaghetti-like parasites, about 12cm long, can cause a pot-bellied appearance. Symptoms may include weight loss, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, or mucus in the stool, and stunted growth.
๐ซHookworms: One of the most dangerous intestinal parasites, hookworms can be transmitted from mother to puppies before birth or through nursing. Look out for signs like extreme lethargy, anemia, poor appetite, and black, tar-like stools containing blood.
๐ซTapeworms: Puppies can get tapeworms by ingesting larvae from host animals like fleas or mice. Symptoms may not be obvious, but small rice-like segments can be found around the a**s or in the stool. Mature tapeworms can cause increased appetite without weight gain.
๐ซWhipworms: These worms find their way into the puppy's digestive tract, causing chronic bowel inflammation. You may notice mucus in the stool, weight loss, or diarrhea.
๐ซCoccidia: This organism can reside in a puppy's intestines, often ingested through raw or undercooked meat or rodents. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, weight loss, and loss of appetite.
๐ซHeartworms: Transmitted through mosquito bites, heartworms can cause heart or lung damage, coughing, lethargy, and fatigue. They can be detected through a blood test and are preventable with proper medication.
๐ซRingworm: Caused by a fungus that lives on the skin, ringworm is highly contagious and can be transmitted to humans. It appears as oval bare patches on your puppy's skin. Minimize contact with other dogs if you suspect ringworm and consult your vet for proper treatment.
๐ Symptoms of Intestinal Worms
Keep an eye out for these signs that your new furry family member may have puppy worms:
๐พ- Feeling weak and lethargic
๐พ- Experiencing diarrhea or vomiting
๐พ- Losing weight despite having a good appetite
๐พ- Having a swollen belly
If you notice any of these symptoms, collect a recent stool sample and schedule a visit with your vet to help diagnose the issue. Your vet will discuss treatment options if your puppy is found to have worms.
