Roosters play a valuable role in our Ark chicken family!
Here are some fun facts!

- For Roosters, Looks Matter
How a person looks often helps guide humans as they find a mate and it’s the same with chickens. An outward appearance of health and vigor provides a glimpse into the future indicating the ability to provide strong offspring.

Hens tend to favour roosters with a large red comb with tall points. Evenly formed wattles and long spurs are also must-haves. Long, shiny, and colourful hackle and saddle feathers are used as a rooster puffs up and displays for a hen.

- Roosters Equal Protection
A rooster can be the ticket to safety for your hens. A rooster wants to live on through his offspring and you don’t have offspring if you don’t have a group of hens that are safe. A good rooster will take this duty seriously and keep an eye out at all times for trouble.

It’s not unusual to observe a rooster busily pecking while tilting an eye up to the sky or scanning the perimeter. If he spots something, a rooster warns the flock with a series of low noises. This tells the rest to stay close to him and remain vigilant. If the danger doesn’t pass, he will quickly sound the alarm by squawking loudly and gathering his flock in a safe area to hold them there until the danger passes. If needed, a rooster will attack a predator to keep it away.

- Roosters Will Keep Order Among the Hens
A rooster is fully aware of the pecking order established in his flock and he will help to keep hen squabbling to a minimum. If there is no rooster in a flock, a dominant hen will usually take this role.

It's officially dry season to our region and in Australia that means, high fire dangers, dry creeks and moving wildlife.

To help them out, fill containers of water in safe places, with rocks in for our smaller creatures, be aware when driving and contact a wildlife carer if you find an animal in distress or injured.

During these next few months we will be providing feed, water and sanctuary for our local wildlife, if you would like to help we appreciate donations to help us give them what they need.

The weather is changing and things are warming up! ☀️☀️

Spare a thought for our wildlife and leave out some water, but don't forget to put a couple of rocks or a brick in it for the smaller critters to be able to climb out.

-Environment: people prefer to have these conversations in a private space with enough time to share what they want to say.

Happy National Bilby Day!!! ❤️❤️

These little cuties are such precious part of our ecosystem, so due to their decline they deserve a day of recognition!

National Bilby Day was officially launched in 2005 and the celebrations are held on the second Sunday of September.

Bilbies, or rabbit-bandicoots, are desert-dwelling marsupial omnivores; they are members of the order Peramelemorphia. At the time of European colonisation of Australia, there were two species. The lesser bilby became extinct in the 1950s; the greater bilby survives but remains endangered. It is currently listed as a vulnerable species.
