Stu went to Shahzada track clearing on the weekend He came home so happy to see all the Shazada supporters and enthusiasts back in the MacDonald Valley .They are achieving great results with the tracks and campsite in readiness for Shahzada in August.
Here in Wagga we finally had some rain after a prolonged dry period , yay.
On Sunday Anne went to ride our our new 20 km loop with Sharyn and Angie for SMZ champs at Tumarumba July 27th .
We also did some more checks at our super venue at the racecourse for SMZ champs.
This ride will be perfect for those training for Shahzada a month later

Garonne Park Trinket left today to start her new life up on the north coast. She has a lovely new owner that she immediately bonded to and they live beside a state forest and will be doing beach rides .

Garonne Park Trinket is a registered part Arab mare, AHSA PF30604
14.2 &1/2hh, 6 yrs, dark chestnut mare with roaning fleck.
Her Dam Garonne Park Tiara AERA 24704 , was our beautiful pinto mare who was highly successful for our whole family in endurance and showing and a super child’s mount. Her sire Karabil Great Expectations had a pedigree full of champions.
Started under saddle by Stuart and then ridden by Anne ( mature rider with dodgy knee ) hence very good to mount ,she has had extensive exposure . She is exceptionally good for bush riding no matter what obstacle you encounter she will lead the way through, under, over ,down or up. Works on the farm with machinery , dogs , cattle and sheep. She has a bold attitude.Trinket has been ridden alone and in groups and has no soundness issues.
She has completed 40 km x 1 and 80 km x 2, both were VGIH and she was exceptionally easy to vet. She is currently fit . We have always thought she would be a good Shahzada horse and has been taught the basics of tailing , she is strong and has carried me up some very steep hills on narrow difficult tracks in the mountains.
Easy to handle no fuss horse who loves eating and camps well in electric or steel yards , taught to hobble, travels well in SL float or truck . She is a quiet well behaved mare and has been prepared to take on the next chapter in her life with a new rider . Ideally suited to a smaller rider who is looking for a capable safe horse.

Sarah has started her own page Grit Equine , she will be providing training opportunities for a limited number of horses.
First time running her own business.
First time she started a horse under saddle she was a child mentored by her father.
Her first job was at Waratah thoroughbreds where Luke Geddes not only mentored her in starting horses under saddle but everything from foaling down to track riding and high level health and stable management.
All the coaches in various disciplines have taught her so much but it is the very broad variety of horses she has had the privilege of training that are the a big influence on what a talented rider and trainer she is growing into.

21/04/2024

Sarah has started her own page for all her equine services. If anyone wants to follow along or reach out. She has very limited spots currently but we highly recommend her.

Thankyou GP Elmo and GP Turbo and our super strapping team, Stuart Sarah and Kurt. Braden and I had a great successful Quilty. Braden was 1st International rider on GP Turbo and this was Turbo’s first 160 km ride we are very proud of him. As always I had a wonderful ride on GP Elmo
It’s a big effort travelling all the way to QLD into such a warmer climate But when you get there and catchup with friends and Sterlings Crossing is such a lovely facility it is certainly worth the effort . Congratulations to the winners and placegetters and all successful riders

Sultan the Pit Pony
Caerphilly, Wales

There is huge sculpture built as a tribute to the pit ponies of Wales you might never have noticed. Sultan the pit pony is made from thousands of tons of waste material left behind when Penallta Colliery closed in the 1990s.

At 200 metres from hoof to muzzle, a galloping pony frozen in time is an imposing monument to the industry which drove Britain through the industrial revolution and put Wales at the centre of world shipping and trade.

Sultan the Pit Pony sits on the site of the Penallta Colliery, which is now a country park popular with dog walkers and families, a few miles north of Caerphilly. Its magnificent mane, hooves and slender body are shaped from the tons of waste coal shale rock that was left on the site when the colliery closed in 1991.

From ground level, the giant pony looks like an unremarkable set of small hills that you might walk right over without knowing what is right under your feet. However, with the recent growth in the use of drones, the true scale of the great sculpture is much easier to see, having remained difficult to view in its entirety since it was created in the 1990s. Designed by Welsh sculptor Mike Petts, it took three years to complete the earthworks between 1996 and 1999.

Sultan was designed to serve a dual purpose. As well as a path for walkers trailing along Sultan's spine, a seating area in its giant nostril and a bench in its ear, the imposing mass of the sculpture acts as a wind break to protect the Parc Penallta events area adjacent to it. Giant hoof prints are scattered around the field above Sultan's head. In rainy periods, these fill with water and become pools to attract wildlife to the park.

Sultan's body is covered in grass, but the black coal shale it is made of is exposed at points to give definition to the hooves, tail, mane and eyes.

The name Sultan comes from one of the last pit ponies in Wales.
When the sculptor of the Penallta pony designed the earthwork, the now-retired Sultan was still alive and a well-loved reminder of the lost coal industry. The sculpture was soon christened Sultan by people locally.

In total, 60,000 tons of coal shale rock were used to bring Sultan to life and be enjoyed by the descendants of the miners who hauled the coal out of the earth at Penallta to power steam engines in trains and ships. Great earth mounds made from millions of tons of waste material dragged out of the mines by men and ponies became massive slag heaps in the valleys of Wales and still dot the landscape to this day. Many have been incorporated into the scenery or planted with trees to keep them stable and less of a mark on the lush green hillsides of the valleys. They are a lasting reminder of the long-closed deep mines of Wales and the people and animals who worked in them.

The Penallta pony sculpture is perhaps the most imaginative use of a slag heap in Wales and is the largest earth sculpture in the UK. It is a fitting tribute to the thousands of hardy ponies that pulled millions of tons of black gold out of the bowels of the earth in the hot and dangerous work of coal mining in Wales during the 19th and 20th centuries. Pit ponies were used into the 1990's.

Coal mining was the driving force of the Welsh economy for decades, with thousands of miners working the country's deep coal mines until the last one closed in 2008. The industry left its mark on the cultural as well as geographical fabric of Wales, with over a million people in Wales working in coal in the 1920's. Today, the figure stands at just 5,000.

Sultan the Pit Pony will at least keep the memory of the pit ponies of Wales, and the miners who led them, alive, as an impressive and lasting tribute to their sacrifice.

Charlie is well known as Sarah's long term cherished all-rounder who tries everything. They also came away with High Point Champion overall. Very proud of our little brumby 🌟

Everyone seems so busy nowadays and we are the same with breaking in young horses and general farm work However the invitation to join Berwick Endurance Stud for a training ride at Mt Lawson was a great fun and relaxing day It was very humid and we welcomed the light rain for the last part of our ride We certainly got a surprise when a couple of hours later that rain turned into a record amount for Albury and areas along the Hume weir including our farm at Wymah . By 8am Monday we had 111 ml and it was still teeming down so back to Wagga we came and we had 90 ml here ! Definitely above our average summer .

Well it wasn’t the end to the endurance season we had planned but we are so lucky that the farm is not affected by floods .
One positive when it’s so wet is Stu spends more time doing his saddlery and 2 new saddles are about to be delivered and new orders started .One new order is a packsaddle on a new tree he hasn’t used before so that will interesting
Young horse training has been slowed down but as the weather improves they will be prepared for sale
Here is a collection of photos of some of our recent activities

Our thoughts are with everyone combating the floods , amazing stories of people and animal rescues So much respect for everyone helping others in the floods.
Wet days allows Stu to spend time in his beloved saddlery shed though lately he hasn’t had much time to make saddles
He has been doing some repairs for people including replacing a broken tree in Luke Geddes saddle , damage not caused by an Arab thankfully Then Brian Swan s packhorse ripped his saddlebags
So now we have just been to Ballarat for a family reunion and stopped off at Lefflers in Melbourne so Stu has his supplies up for more saddlery work
