The Crucial Role of Developing Club Helpers in Dog Sports

In the world of dog sports, the development of skilled helpers is a persistent challenge. Everyone seeks experienced and knowledgeable helpers, yet few are willing to offer their dogs for training purposes. This paradox often leaves clubs and individuals struggling to cultivate proficient helpers from within their ranks.

When I choose someone to develop as a helper, they receive my and the club full support. If they demonstrate the capability to work with my dog, they are more than capable of handling the club dogs under my supervision. Despite this, I often hear criticisms like, "He is no good," and find myself defending my choice of helper. The reality is, not every helper will seamlessly fit into the club or embrace the hobby sport mentality. However, when they do, the reward is unparalleled. Having the unwavering support of your own dedicated helper is invaluable.

Make no mistake, both as a club and as individuals, we utilize professional helpers who bring immense value to our training. Yet, the foundational work and meticulous development occur within the club 2-3 times per week, facilitated by club helpers.

Developing our own helpers is not only a practical necessity but also a strategic investment in the long-term success and sustainability of our training programs.

As we approach the final leg of our journey, we understand that this is not the end, but rather a fresh start. It signifies the beginning of our next chapter, where we aim to progress and evolve.

Our purpose was to absorb knowledge from the best, build connections, and expand our skills.

As we crossed the finish line, I am filled with gratitude. A huge thank you to my dear friend Ang Auger who always supports me and ensures that Cobra is in top shape. Juraj, who rearranged his family vacation for our competitions and never fails to provide encouragement and support. And to my Team back home, thank you for your unwavering support.

The experience of trialing in over 30-degree heat, alongside Czech’s best, and the extensive preparation we undertook, is truly priceless. Despite some costly mistakes, we gained a wealth of knowledge and identified areas for improvement in our training and preparation.

Cobra, my beloved companion, you are an extraordinary dog who never fails to impress. Your presence is noticed and admired wherever we go. Your effortless travel and companionship bring me immense joy. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with you.

After two days, we are still in the competition!

Today, Cobra faced two of the most skilled and famous helpers in Europe Marek Hytych and Jany Bohm. We made some costly mistakes and scored a 72 “a” in protection.

Learning never stops. Tomorrow is another day.
