πŸ”₯ It's too hot for pets to be left in cars! πŸ”₯

A few of our staff and their families have reported pets being left in hot cars this week.

It's 34C (93F) outside which means within 10 mins, it's already 43C inside the car. Even with the windows down, it is too hot to be left in a vehicle.

If you can't take your pet inside with you at your destination, leave them at home.

Did you know cats need prevention too?

Even indoor cats can become infested with fleas, or end up with a tick on them! Humans and pets who go outside can carry pesky bugs inside, where they can get to indoor cats.

β˜€οΈ It's getting warm out there, which means it gets warm in your car! It only takes 6 minutes to reach dangerous temperatures in a vehicle.

Keep these points in mind when you are travelling with your pet:

1. Never leave animals unattended in a vehicle. Parked cars can quickly reach deadly temperatures, even on relatively mild days with the car parked in the shade and the windows open. If you can’t take your animal with you when you leave your car, leave them at home where they are safe.

2. Knowing who to call. To report an animal left unattended in a vehicle, call Provincial Animal Welfare Services at 1-833-9Animal, or your local police. If you see an animal in immediate danger, call 911.

3. Plan ahead! Driving or travelling with your animal? Make β€œcool” decisions by running any errands before you leave, or after you arrive at your destination, making only pet-friendly stops, and opting for drive-thru meal options. Never risk your animal’s safety by leaving them unattended in a vehicle, even if it’s just for a few minutes! If something unexpected were to delay you from returning to your vehicle, such as a long lineup or a medical emergency, it could cost your furry friend their life.

Heat warnings and high temperatures can lead to medical emergencies for our pets. Kathy Taylor is a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in OVC's Intensive Care Unit. Today Kathy shares her top tips for keeping your dog cool on hot summer days:

β˜€οΈ Very early morning walks (consider their coat colour and how they feel in the sun). Sometimes a couple of slow, sniffy walks up and down the block will do on hot days.

β˜€οΈ Lots of cold water available - you can even add some ice if in your dog’s bowl if you are hanging out in the shade outside.

β˜€οΈ Some dogs are sun lovers but they may not always regulate themselves and move to shade when outdoors - monitoring their time in the sunlight is important.

β˜€οΈ Keep them brushed to keep their coats as light as possible and do not shave double-coated breeds - it insulates from the heat as well as the cold.

β˜€οΈ Freeze some treats like frozen celery. Ice cubes with dog-safe fruit or vegetable are a cooling treat.

β˜€οΈ There are lots of stores that are dog-friendly (a Google search will usually show this).

πŸŽ† Firework Safety πŸŽ†

It's the Victoria Day Long Weekend and there's bound to be fireworks flying!

Make sure your pets are comfortable and help them feel safe by following these helpful tips:
πŸŽ† Keep your pet inside with you
πŸŽ† If they have a "safe space" they like to hang out in, make sure they can easily access it
πŸŽ† Avoid the noise - play music or a movie to help distract them from the scary booming noises outside
πŸŽ† Keep their collars and ID on them in case they accidentally get out of the house. They might run if they are scared, and if they have proper ID on, they'll be reunited with you faster

If you have any questions about how to keep your pet safe and calm during fireworks, please contact your regular veterinary clinic.

Recently we shared that our very own veterinary receptionist Jenn partook in a Pet Compassion Program. As part of this program, Jenn has put together some information on a new service she will be offering - End of Life Pre-Planning Sessions.

Essentially what this means is, in a similar fashion to a human funeral home, Jenn will sit down with interested families to pre-plan their pet's end of life decisions.

These can be scheduled with families of healthy senior pets or those closer to their end of life journey.

The idea is to get thoughts down on paper and logged into their file for peace of mind for the owner, knowing decisions they've made were done so with a clear head, not in the midst of grief. It gives them time to ask questions, to alleviate fears, to look into special requests in regards to aftercare or memorial pieces, to discuss pre-sedation dose protocol where necessary, and to know that when the day comes, all they need to do is show up to love their pet, because the "business" side of things is already done.

They will also be welcome to place credits on their account towards end of life, though this is not required.

Anyone who books an appointment will be sent home with a grief package that includes a mix of helpful articles to navigate grief, as well as bucket list ideas, memorial ideas, and more.

The cost for these sessions is $25 plus tax, and can be booked with Jenn as an in-clinic appointment or over the phone.

If you have any questions or are interested in scheduling please reach out to Jenn for further assistance at: [email protected]

We look forward to providing this important service to our families.

At CK Vets, we understand that your fur babies are family, and we know how devastating it is to say goodbye.

In the spirit of celebrating the lives of your loved ones, we are implementing some new additions to our euthanasia appointments.

When you come into one of our comfort rooms, you may see a chalkboard in the room filled with messages of support from the team members who loved your pet right along with you.

There will be chocolate 'goodbye' kisses, because no dog should leave the world without tasting chocolate.

For any of the younger family (or any adult who wants to take part), we have washable paint to create a pawprint to take home with you, and a handprint to leave with your pet so you can each take a part of the other along the next step of your journey. We also have lipstick and q-tips so you can leave kisses all over our pets; a beautiful visual of "sending them away with love"

We hope these options will help to turn a devastating moment into a beautiful experience you can remember and cherish forever.
