🌞🐾 Keep Your Pets Cool in the Heatwave! 🐾🌞
As temperatures soar, it’s crucial to keep our furry friends safe from the summer heat. Here are some vet-approved tips to ensure your pets stay cool and hydrated:
Hydrate: Make sure fresh, clean water is always available. Add ice cubes to their bowl or use a pet water fountain to keep it cool.
Cool Retreats: Create shaded areas outdoors and cool spots indoors with fans or air-conditioning. Provide cooling mats or comfy bedding.
Avoid Peak Heat: Walk pets early in the morning or late in the evening. Hot pavements can burn their paws, so test the ground with your hand.
Cooling Measures: Use cool, wet towels or bandanas, freeze pet toys, or set up a shallow pool for them to splash in.
Never Leave Pets in Cars: Even with windows cracked, parked cars can become dangerously hot. Always leave pets at home when running errands.
Watch for Overheating: Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, and lethargy. If you suspect overheating, move your pet to a cool place, give water, and contact your vet immediately.
Follow these tips to help your pets enjoy a safe and cool summer! 🐕🐈💧
Meet Bella, a 22-month-old spayed female Maremma.🐶❤️
Bella is a beautiful guardian dog who needs more space to roam and do what she does best. She’s got a heart of gold and is incredibly sweet, making her the perfect addition to a farm or large property where she can truly thrive.
Bella is a wonderful companion who loves to protect and be part of the family. If you have space and are looking for a loyal and loving farm dog, Bella might just be the perfect match! Bella is good with other dogs if introduced slowly.
Interested in meeting Bella or learning more? Please reach out for more details.
And It’s changed again……. The process for taking dogs into the US is now much simpler. Just one form that you complete online. In addition to this form you will need proof of current rabies vaccine and microchip.
This link provides all the necessary information. We are breathing a big sigh of relief that these negotiations have had such success.
If you have any questions, please give us a call on 778 428 6401
There are four requirements for dogs that have ONLY been in countries that are dog-rabies free or lo
We are always getting compliments on how pretty the gardens around our building are looking, so we wanted to show you the work going on here this weekend.
As most of you know, Dr Parke does all of the planting and design himself, and you can see the results of his hard work when you see the garden in full bloom.
Our video is a time lapse from this weekend with Dr Parke and his friend Chris starting the setup and planting of the new borders along our pathway. Watch this space for the completed project!
Food for thought ….
The American Association of Feline Practitioners announced the release of the 2024 AAFP Intercat Tension Guidelines: Recognition, Prevention, and Management. The guidelines are designed to help veterinary teams better understand the social behavior between cats and help recognize, manage or prevent intercat tension.

NEW TRAVEL RULES HAVE BEEN AGREED
If you are travelling with your dog into the US after 1st August, you will need to book an appointment with your veterinarian prior to travel.
The vet needs to:
-confirm pet's details - Name, Breed, S*x, Date of Birth, colour/markings
- scan and verify your pet's microchip number and confirm the date it was implanted
- confirm details of Rabies vaccination including manufacturer, serial number, product expiry date, date vaccine administered, date next vaccine is due. If the pet hasn't received a Rabies vaccination before, this needs to be done at a minimum of 30 days prior to travel.
- confirm the pet is over 6 months of age
- provide copy of medical records, and ensure pet's details are consistent.
- provide a Rabies Vaccine Certificate for any rabies vaccine administered. If Rabies vaccine was administered by another veterinary practice you will need to obtain a copy of the certificate from them (signed by the Dr in blue ink) and bring this certificate to your appointment.
Once the vet has signed and stamped the form with the practice stamp, you need to keep this form along with the Rabies vaccine certificate, the copy of your pet's medical records for the previous 6 months and the copy of the CDC Import Form Receipt for inspection at the border.
This protocol applies for dogs that have been within Canada and not to have travelled to any of the high risk countries listed on the CDC website. The link below is for the Canadian government website that lists further information for export and for other pets.
At present the CDC website hasn't been updated with the final information but we will forward this to you all as soon as it becomes available. We do not know yet how far in advance of travel these forms need to be completed.

Update: The CFIA have confirmed they are in negotiations with CDC but are currently unable to endorse any travel documents for taking pets south of the border.
This article goes more in depth on the current situation facing travellers.
With just weeks before new US rules come into effect for Canadians travelling with dogs, there appears to be a roadblock.
We are very proud of our colleague Maddy Thran who has travelled to Wales as part of Canada’s U20 Women’s Rugby Team.
Canada’s U20 Women’s Rugby Team opened the inaugural Transatlantic Quad Series with a 23-10 win over the United States on Sunday in Ystrad Mynach, Wales.
The team will also play against England and Wales in Cardiff for the first-ever Women’s U20 Transatlantic Quad Series.
Maddy, from Courtenay plays for Comox Valley Rapids and also plays for UBC, while she is studying Arts.
URGENT UPDATE - TRAVEL TO THE US
We regret to inform you that, at present, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is unable to endorse the required paperwork for pets traveling to the United States. As a result, no pets will be able to travel to the US after August 1st until the CFIA and the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) reach an agreement on the process.
The CDC Dog Import Permit, which was initially scheduled to become available today (July 15th), is still not live on the CDC website. We believe this delay is due to ongoing negotiations with the CFIA.
We will keep you updated as we receive more information. In the meantime, if you were planning to travel to the US with your pet after August 1st, we recommend making alternative arrangements. While we hope for a resolution before the deadline, we want to be transparent that we are not overly optimistic at this time.
The CDC offers a tool called DogBot to help determine the applicable rules for your dog's travel based on the travel dates and origin. However, please note that this information may change in light of recent developments.
