We are a friendly staff that is committed to matching our adorable adoptables with loving forever homes. We get to know the animals in our care by spending time with them everyday, and we love keeping in touch with our adopters. HBCP is contracted by Halifax Regional Municipality to provide shelter for dogs that are in violation of the HRM by-law A-700 and critically injured cats that have been pi

cked up by Animal Services. Along with providing a safe environment, our dedicated, professional animal care staff offer tender loving care and have the animals treated by a veterinarian as needed. Animals that are not claimed within 72 business hours are assessed for adoption to determine which type of home environment would be most suitable for them.

Please note that this page will be closed as of April 30th 2020.. As most of our followers know we will be closing our doors as of April 30th at 12 noon. The staff would like to thank all of our supporters, adopters, volunteers over these wonderful 10 years. We have enjoyed serving HRM, we loved seeing the reuniting of pet owners with their lost dog or cat that has come into our care. It has been a joy to adopt all the animals from the birds to the dogs to their new homes. We will miss you all. Shanda, Chris, Allison, Hannah, Samantha, Melissa, Hope, and Dr. Minty

Dear Friends:
It is with great sadness we need to announce that our doors will be closing as of April 30th.
All of us at Homeward Bound City Pound have loved serving HRM for the last 10 years. Each and every day has been a pleasure caring for, reuniting, or adopting out, all the dogs running at large in HRM. We want to thank the public for all your support and wonderful memories that has made our mission so joyful. Thank you to our volunteers and the community that helped enrich the animal's lives during their stay with us. Your help was so appreciated.
We would like to congratulate the SPCA who have been granted the contract for the next 5 years.
Sincerely,
from all the staff:
Shanda, Hope, Chris, Allison, Samantha, Hannah, Melissa, Dr. Minty, Derek and Raelee
Just a note that we will still be adopting out dogs and cats til April 30th. Please check our website citypound.ca

We have received a number of requests recently surrounding fostering and volunteering, particularly in light of COVID-19.

We wanted to assure all of our followers that we are a fully staffed, contracted shelter that does not rely on volunteer power to operate. While we greatly appreciate all of our volunteers and the work they do, we are keeping foot traffic to a minimum to keep our staff healthy, and thus do not need any volunteers at the moment. Since we are fully staffed, we do not require foster homes for any of our animals at any time.

If we all do our part and practice social distancing, we will be back to accepting volunteers before you know it! Stay safe everyone!

Thanks,
Staff of HBCP

Good afternoon everyone,

Due to the recent events surrounding COVID-19, we will be limiting access to Homeward Bound City Pound for our staff's health and safety. We will remain open for our regular hours (8am-8pm) to service you for license purchases & renewals, dog redemptions, and wildlife drop-offs. We are asking that no volunteers or students assist us at this time. However, if you have any questions regarding our services or our animals up for adoption, please phone (902) 407-7283 and press 1. Our website is always up to date with our adoptable animals and moving forward, we will set up appointments for meet and greets.

Thank you for your understanding,
Staff of HBCP

Yeti is feelin' lucky! We'd like to give a special shout-out to Sky's Pet Grooming for taking on the task of cleaning up some very messy tangles on this adorable abominable (snow)man. He sure feels like a new pup in his soft peach fuzz, complete with a cheeky heart! 💚

At Homeward Bound, we recognize that shelter life can be very boring and/or stressful for the dogs (and cats!) in our care. One step that we take to minimize this is our regular enrichment program. Around lunch time, each dog is served with a special enrichment or puzzle toy, typically stuffed with a spoonful of wet food or peanut butter and a few pieces of kibble or treats. These toys require a little bit of thinking or work to obtain the reward, which engages our dogs' minds and helps to keep them off of the stressful aspects of the environment.

As you can see here, we customize each enrichment item based on the dog's capacity and interest in these toys -- dogs who have just arrived and don't quite grasp the idea or are too stressed to work for their treats may receive a simple bowl smeared with peanut butter and treats, for example, while dogs who like a challenge may receive a Kong or a harder puzzle toy.

Single cat seeking single human!

If you're looking for a hunk o' love (and some ginger attitude), Jaggro is ready to commit! This sweet boy loves naps in the sunshine and long walks to the treat cupboard.

His better half should be cat-savvy, as he has some quirks and can love a little too hard (read: love bites are his thing). Four-legged roommates and tiny humans need not apply, as Jaggro demands all the love for himself.

Come in during adoption hours from 12pm-4pm daily to meet your new valentine!

Thank you for supporting this wonderful organization and the work they do!

Happy Monday! We hope everyone has had a wonderful start to the week. We've received a recent increase of inquiries regarding found pets that are picked up running at large by HRM Animal Services. We'd like to take a moment to clarify our role as the contracted shelter for HRM :)

Due to our contract and the 3 business day hold period, we are unable to release information on any found pets that are in the custody of Animal Services. Any inquiries on the status of a pet that may be in the care of animal control should go through the HRM call centre at 311 or 1.800.835.6428 (toll free in NS).

If you believe your pet has been picked up by Animal Services, the next step in arranging the redemption of your pet is to phone 311 ext. 5.

For more information regarding lost and found pets, you can visit https://www.halifax.ca/home-property/animal-services

Any pets that remain unclaimed after the 72 hour hold are transferred to the custody of HBCP. They undergo a thorough vetting process, which includes behavioural assessments and veterinary care, before they are posted for adoption.

***The length of this process varies with each individual animal, and is dependent on many factors such as the treatment of underlying conditions or recovery from surgeries.***

All current adoptables (like our ginger guy Jaggro, pictured here!) can be viewed at our website at www.citypound.ca.

We always love hearing from the new families of our adoptees! Two of our most recent families sent along some wonderful photos and messages about their newest additions and we would like to share them with you.

From Monkey (formerly Rocky)'s new owners, along with the first photo:
"We are thoroughly thankful that this little bundle of Monkey love and joy is now a member of our family. He is home forever."

And, a wonderful photo of TJ loving his new life.

The staff of HBCP want to thank every family who has adopted from us in the past -- we are so grateful for those who open their homes and hearts to the animals we love so much ❤️

Kenzie and Gunther are hoping that Santa brings them homes of their very own for Christmas ❤️ But while they wait for that special day, they wanted to give you 5 tips to keep the furry members of your household happy & safe this holiday season!

1. Keep them busy! The holidays are noisy, unusual times for your pets -- give them a quiet corner with a Kong or puzzle toy so they can unwind... this will also help keep counter surfers away from the table.

2. Skip the tinsel & other sparkly, stringy decorations if you have cats! Kenzie says that it looks just delectable and she couldn't help her herself, but we know that consuming things like this can lead to dangerous consequences & emergency vet trips.

3. Avoid having toxic plants in your home, or keep them out of reach if you do! Though poinsettias, holly, and mistletoe are beautiful, they can really make your furry friend sick.

4. Keep the leftovers for yourself! A sudden change in diet or an overindulgence can leave your pet feeling icky, especially when it comes to fatty foods. Cooked bones can turn in to dangerous splinters and cause intestinal perforations -- it's best to just pass on people food.

5. Don't invite Fido or Fluffy to the party! More often than not, your pets would prefer to be out of the chaos during holiday parties. Make sure they have a safe place to escape to if the house gets too noisy or stressful. As a bonus, keeping them tucked away will prevent them from getting in to alcohol, chocolates, or other foods that could make them ill.
