Species Highlight : Quaker Parrots also know as a monk parakeets.

Quakers are an adorable addition to any family or flock they are small parrots who come in a variety of colour mutations. Their lifespan is approximately 20-30 years. They have a varied diet and can be extremely smart and interactive. This little South American bird is outlawed in some states due to how they flock and can decimate entire crops quickly but they are allowed here in Canada. Being super smart and potentially destructive chewers they need a lot of care, attention and enrichment. At only approximately 12" they do not require a huge footprint in your home and can get along with both smaller and larger parrots to fit into your family. Quakers are named as such due to their fun bouncy movements which can look like shaking/quaking. This movement is unique to this species of bird, and is absolutely adorable in the babies. Quakers are not excessively loud, but are also not considered quiet friends.

This is yesterday's mystery bird! She is a baby blue headed pionus parrot. She already has her forever family lined up, they are impatiently waiting for the day where she is weaned off of baby formula and ready to go home with them. She is just the sweetest baby and will make the best lifetime companion for her family.

Babies are not just for spring! Here at Ziggy's we have been busy hand raising a few different species of baby bird. By us taking the time to hand raise these little feathered friends we are then able to be sure they are tame, friendly and eating a nutritious diet before we send them home with you as a companion animal. Parent raised birds tend to be more "wild" and take far more time and effort on your part to become hand tame and friendly to members of your household. Stop in this weekend and meet with some of the baby birds we have to offer. They will stay with us until they are fully weaned off of formula and we are certain that they are eating a pelleted diet and also a varied one full of fruits and veggies. We do offer deposit, and payment plans on all of our birds, so if you think one of these sweet babies may be your next best friend let us know.

Whew, what an amazing weekend we just had. Lots of sunshine and summer temps! I took the long weekend and went to Long Point, Ontario for a mini vacation. I did many relaxing things that did not involve birds....JUST JOKING! I did some of the best bird watching of my life. Mom is living vicariously through my photos as she was here in the store. Cranes, herons, king fishers, flycatchers and bald eagles are just some of the species I was able to photograph. Not my "normal" exotic birds, but native ones, in the wild. There are so many walking trails, hiking paths and preserves with lookout points I did not know what to visit first. I recommend Long Point as a day trip or even a week of sun and birding for anyone interested in the many native species we have here in Ontario.

Ziggy's was invited to show some birds this at this years VBC at the Cross Roads Church in Ingersoll. Thank you to our lovely customer Lynn for the invite! I think we won over the children with some good show and tell. Lynn brought her conure Lincoln, I brought Dewey, Marley, Ruby and a lovely white cockatiel who were all very well behaved on and off harness! Dewey even waived at the crowd.
Lynn had some great facts all prepared and the children were so quiet and respectful.
Overall it was a fun Monday morning outing with some of our feathered friends.

Wow, what an interesting post Hagen Avicultural Research Institute - HARI made yesterday! Kelly and I are very intrigued. Has anyone used bentonite clay "milk" for their birds or themselves?? This is not a new idea, and has been mostly is used/studied in animals to help with heavy metal poisoning, digestion and the removal of toxins in a natural, safe and apparently effective way. Let us know in the comments if you have tried this remedy for your feathered friends!

Today is an overcast and boring day for Dewey. He has been enjoying the warm weather and all the new friends stopping by the store lately! He loves waving hi, and yelling HELLO! to everyone who passes by. Ziggy's has a few birds who are long time "residents" like Dewey. Some store birds like Ziggy and Merlin. Birds waiting to be rehomed, plus all of our friends ready for their forever homes in the bird room. Always something for everyone. If you are looking for a new feathered friend, just ask...you never know who might be available or stop in just to say hi back to Dewey.

Cages, cages, cages. That's all we have talked about this week. A new cage can be fun for us and scary for your feathered friend. There are some tips and trick to help the transition to a new space fun and enriching.
Set up the new cage beside their existing cage.
Move some favorite toys into it.
Use positive reinforcement training tips and treats to interact with the new cage.
Follow their lead, allow them to explore and figure out this is their new space.
Deep breath, it will all work out!
How to set up the cage is also a consideration. Birds need to be active and enriched. Take a read through this article to make sure you have the right plan for the new cage set up, so success is assured.
