We had a wonderful day of lessons yesterday. Everyone has show season on their minds and was working so hard! Pushing themselves as well as their horses! Those difficult rides are the ones that really make you LOVE riding horses and those difficult horses are the ones that make you a better rider! So here's to the horses that have made us! Here is a picture of mine from 1994/95. Candyman was a little pony with a huge personality and required LOTS of hard work. He dumped me off in more show rings than I can even recall but I loved him dearly! Post a picture of a horse that made you a better rider!

Horses....I talk about horses a lot. I think about horses even more. I plan my days around horses and I sleep at night thinking about them. I see a lot of post on facebook about horses because lets be honest, almost everyone I have on facebook is connected to horses. I am equally so lucky to have my job be ....horses..... in that I get the absolute pleasure of sharing my love and passion with adults and young people teaching riding lessons. There are so many reasons that riding horses and working with horses is good thing for you. The physical aspect of it is obvious to anyone who has ever been on a horse. the emotional aspects are less obvious but just as important. The sense of accomplishment and understand of something outside of yourself builds such wonderful confidante, empowerment and responsibility. These are things that I feel, kids today REALLY need. No computer game or phone can make you a better rider. Only hard work can. That is powerful. I love that I get to show people that. There are a few things though that have no place in horses and horse back riding. Lets take a moment to talk about things I have no room for in my riding program. One that I remind the older riders more often then younger riders is "baggage". When you walk past the doors at the barn you have to drop all your "baggage" from the day. The focus must be on your horse! You must be in the moment and be able to listen and connect with that horse. They are highly sensitive and they don't need your stress. So along with your "baggage" I have no room for Anger or temper. These are what kill a connection. They rip apart weeks if not years of work. Never try to school your horse out of temper or anger. Never force a fight on to your horse. They will fight back and you WILL lose. You might think you have won but trust me, you have not. If you are rough with your horse he will find a way to show you how powerful he is. respect him! Don't misunderstand this with being weak and allowing a horse to take advantage. But know how to TAKE and GIVE. The horse is like a big pop bottle. You shake and shake building that pressure and if you never release some well one day, when you least expect it....BOOM.... This leads me into another thing I have no room for and that's ego. I often will have riders who come in with huge ego and feel that when I ask them to do something they know better and will ignore and repeat their bad habits because they think they are getting results. Forcing a headset with their hands or rushing a movement that the horse simply does not have the understanding or muscle to produce. When ego is is the way of your learning process you will never reach the skill set you desire! No one is above hard work. Try to remember with someone who has been working with horses for many more years then you...well it's always worth your time to listen and see if you can take from what they are saying. Common and basic respect for both the spot the life style and most of all THE HORSE is so important. I am very lucky to have all my horses and I don't forget that. The hard work and the long days are often marked with so much happiness. They make the moments that a young girl has swept the entire barn without being asked THAT much more sweet. The moment a child asks if they can clean stalls, fill buckets or groom a muddy horse even more joyous. We must remember that what we do with our horse today with be with both you and your horse forever. Every little thing IS that big when you remember to RESPECT that horse.....each time you climb on your horses back you put your life in his hands. In return when you walk into the center and climb off his back at the end of the ride all he asks for in return is Love (and food haha) Horses are amazing, and horses are what I do, and for that I am forever thankful! So, thank you to the horses and all my clients for making my dreams come true!

THIS...This says it all.....

A horse becomes a mirror image of the riders position (posture) habits. And a well-educated riding instructor see's it and wants to help change it but is more often than not meet with resistance. You see most riders think that because they have years of experience riding or have had a few lessons the current problems they are having with their horse must be about the horse.
