🚨Heat wave warning ‼️ As we enter higher temperatures please ensure your pets are kept in mind. We want to ensure that all of your pets are kept safe, and help avoid any heat related emergencies as temperatures soar above 30 degrees. Keeping pets in cool/shaded areas while outside, avoid walking on pavement, ensure they have access to water at all times - and never leave your pet in the car. Common signs of heat stroke can include elevated respiratory rate, dry/sticky gums, abnormal gum colour ( it is good exercise to take a look at your dogs gum colour periodically to know what their normal colour is ), seizing, extreme lethargy. If any of these symptoms are displayed your pet should be seen immediately by a veterinarian. #kimberleybc #veterinarymedicine #veterinarycare #veterinaryclinic #keeppetscool #summer #vets #vettechlife #vettechsofinstagram

PORCUPINE QUILLS: When taking our pets out for a walk in nature there are multiple species of wildlife we need to be cautious about. Although we may not see them often, porcupines are a species that when our canine friends cross paths, the consequences can be alarming. It is important to keep your pets close by, and it is recommended to ensure your pet has excellent recall, so that if you do come across a porcupine, or any other wild species, keeping them close can mitigate any emergencies, and avoid a trip to the veterinarian. HEAT STROKE: It is extremely important during the warm summer months to keep a very close eye on our pets, and how they are coping with the heat. Dogs are unable to sweat like humans, therefore their tolerance of higher temperatures are lower, and can have extreme consequences. Knowing signs to watch for is extremely important. Eg. Red gums, excessive panting, sudden onset of lethargy, collapse. AND remember, never leave your pet in a vehicle. FERTILIZERS: Gardening season is upon us, and with this comes using products in the garden that we may not realize can be harmful to our pets. Even if they are not directly eating the fertilizer, they can still ingest the product by walking on where it has been used, and then licking their paws. Most fertilizers are pet friendly, however it is important to do some research and ensure the product you’re using isn’t harmful to our furry friends. For more information in regard to summer hazards for your pets, don’t hesitate to give us a call: 1-778-481-5288 #veterinaryclinic #keepyourpetssafe #vetmed #veterinarymedicine #summervibes #dogsofinstagram #veterinarycare #talktoyourvet
📣 Is your dog vaccinated for Leptospirosis? 💥❗️. What is Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis is a disease that can affect human and animals, including your pets. While for many years occurrence among pets was rare, the disease has been diagnosed more frequently in the past few years. This bacteria thrives in standing, or slow moving water and can also live in soil. Many different kinds of wild and domestic animals carry the bacterium. Dogs are usually infected by ingestion of infected urine or coming in contact with rodents. Transmission can occur from dog to dog via infected urine, bite wounds, or saliva. Transmission can also occur to humans. Dogs who are infected can develop acute kidney failure, liver failure, or hemorrhage. Antibiotics are reasonably effective against the acute stages of the disease, if caught early, but the disease can be fatal. We have traditionally not seen cases of Leptospirosis in our area. However, recent cases have been reported in the West Kootenay’s. For this reason, we are now recommending vaccination for leptospirosis for high risk patients. Who is high risk? Dogs who live an outdoor lifestyle, enjoy swimming and playing in water, are in frequent contact with other dogs (doggy daycare, boarding facilities, dog parks), and dogs who are travelling outside of our area. The Initial vaccine requires a booster in 3-4 weeks, plus an examination with the veterinarian if we haven’t seen the pet for this vaccine, and then an annual booster there after. Everyone say Hi to Sugar 🐈⬛🐈
She was seen today by Dr Cater as she wasn’t feeling 100%. The team gave her snuggles, and it seemed as though she was feeling a little better by this evening, and had even eaten a little bit of dinner tonight. We are all hoping she is on the road to recovery.
