When the fox is is the area we have to keep the yard on lock down. No free ranging. Which also means we have to grow some specialty treats for our birds (including our disabled big girl chicken Nora). This is organic rye

Some different feathers from our chickens and guineas. 1st is a tail feather from our mixed rooster. Next is a guinea fowl feather followed by an old english game hen feather then an Ayam Cermani feather. The last two are a mature serama and a week old seramas feather. LOOK at the tiny size of that baby feather. Gave me inspiration for this post when I found it.

LOVE the colors mother nature chose when she made birds.

It's been a while since we had an introduction.

Meet Norma. This angel was born to a new mama that didn't want to be a mama. She was left to die (sometimes the instict just isn't there). I found her at 630am that morning frozen solid. Literally. Cold to the touch, legs straight and body firm solid. Eyes closed and it seemed death at definetely occured. Couldn't feel a pulse and there was zero movement. Walking to bury baby with baby in my hand I felt the tiniest pulse. Still, baby looked "gone" - 100%. I immediately got into my car and cranked the heat. Held her in a fist with the hot air blowing on my hand so as to not burn her.

I was late for work by this time so Norma came with to my office. En route, her pulse strengthened. It took approx 2 hours before she could stand and longer than that before she ate (a colleague had cooked egg for brunch- thank heavens!). By noon, Norma was eating, drinking, walking (running) and chirping up a storm.

This was 6 months ago.

Today, Norma is one of our smartest chickens (who ever would have thought! After what I thought would cause some degree of brain damage??) She is a wee bit cranky (even though she was hand-held so much- *a first for us* all of our hand held birds are pet friendly)

And by the grace of God she is healthy as can be and oh so gorgeous!

AND.. she doesn't like the rest of flock much. She also doesn't get bullied. Just happily independent.

SERAMA CHECKLIST:

🐓 Lives for 7+ years if taken care of with love;
🐔 Weighing under 19oz if purebred;
🌈 Comes in many different color combinations included black, white, caramel, brown, exchequer etc.;
🥚 Laying 4-5 eggs per week less the times they stop laying to naturally rest;
🥚 Eggs are usually white to a darker cream;
🐣 Extremely good with children and each other;
🐔can be a broody breed for sure. They are the BEST- most protective and absolutely instinctive mamas EVER. A lot like a silkie mama but not as snuggly...

Have been raising these beautiful and oh so sweet birds for a long time and it always amazes me how amazing they are as mothers the -SECOND- time around. The first time mamas are sub-par at best compared to when they become second time mamas.

One practice round (with the help of a sister wife or two or sometimes a naturally occurring adoption from mama to another mama) and the 1st time mama will be good for the next go.

We believe in allowing our sweethearts to be broody.

If the eggs are fertilized we often get a 100% hatch rate under a broody hen - even shipped eggs when we bring in new genetics:)

Too adorable. Our son made this little nest box for fun. Turns out everyone loves it.

We have 2 Silkie hens who reside with our seramas. What a blessing they are. They help care for every baby and every adolescent. They are better than an incubator and live to be mommies.

NOTE: we don't allow our birds to be broody back to back, they also very rarely want to be. Too much to enjoy; the great outdoors and the fresh produce they get every day!

Today we lost a baby. A three (3) week old angel. Our broody mama made the choice not to have her babe under her in the night.

We keep the serama coop above 10 degrees at all times but it just wasn't enough:(

No matter how long one raises chickens, loss still hurts. Or maybe just me.

Today my little sister gives birth to her 1st baby. (A human baby)

Death happens. So does life.

What a day.

Made these pretty bags for the coops today to deter any mice. We have mouse proof buildings EXCEPT they can access via the chicken doors. Our birds free range so the doors are always open except at night and when it's too cold.

🚫The secret "mouse-be-gone" ingredients are as follows:
🪄Star Anise;
🪄Cloves or ground clove powder;
🪄Chilli powder or flakes; and
🪄Cinnamon.

I just use a spoonful of each. The first two ingredients are the most powerful so can put in extra. The overall scent is quite nice to walk into when in the coop:)

I hang a bag near the chicken doors and away from any hidden mouse traps. Also works for garages etc.

Side note: contrary to popular belief guinea hens are not always good 🐁 control
