Let's put some rumours to rest

WE ARE NOT ALL SICK WITH COVID -19

One part time staff member tested positive after their shift, so we are shutting down as a precaution to PROTECT THE PUBLIC as well as ourselves.

At the time of this posting NO OTHER STAFF MEMBERS ARE SHOWING SYMPTOMS, we are testing in a timely fashion, and we plan to be back Monday morning. Risk to the public has been and continues to be minimal since we have been doing (and will continue to do) outdoor curbside service while wearing masks, and the person who tested positive did not interact with any clients.

TO OUR VALUED CLIENTS REGARDING
STAGE 3 OPENING:

As much as we would love to see our clients back in the clinic, we will be continuing with curbside care (where we retrieve pets from clients outside the clinic) and will re-evaluate in the fall.

Lack of space, as well as the number of staff we have working at any given time, makes it difficult to maintain social distancing and can add stress to the team while they work to provide the best patient care during very busy days.

Thank you for your understanding in these very challenging times.

Because of the recent announcement of a lockdown on December 26th, we have received several calls with questions. I hope this answers some of them.

We will be closed from noon on December 24th until 8:30 AM January 4th. This has nothing to do with the lockdown. Staff are simply exhausted from nine months of coping with COVID and need the break.

Curbside pick-up and return of pets will continue through the winter months. Appointments, surgery and dentistry will continue as we catch up from the backlog of the summer and fall. Essentially our services will continue uninterrupted unless we receive other direction from our governing body.

We cannot do non-essential services such as nail trims.

Please bring a cell phone with you to each appointment and call the hospital when you arrive. A staff member and/or a veterinarian will speak to you and someone will come to your vehicle to collect your pet. If you do not have a cell phone, please knock on our door.

Once the appointment is finished, a staff member will bring your pet and a transaction machine to your vehicle.

Please wear a face mask when speaking in person to the staff, even if you remain in your car. A new strain of COVID-19 that is easier to catch has been identified in the U.K. and there is no reason to suppose it isn't already here. We use face masks to protect you from any infection we may unknowingly have. Please return the favour.

Use a debit or credit card to reduce contact transfer of possible virus. If you absolutely must use cash, no change will be given and a credit for the remaining balance will remain on your account.

Hang in there. COVID vaccines are here and relief is in sight. Meanwhile, continue safe distancing, enjoy the holidays, and stay healthy.

Hello Everyone!

We are happy to announce we are returning to our regular closing time of 5:30 PM Monday through Friday, but will be closed from 12:00-1:00 for lunch. As usual, we will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Unfortunately the building will remain closed to the public since there is not enough space to maintain proper social distancing particularly in the exam rooms. Please have patience while we all work through the COVID experience together.

I realize people are stressed and impatient with the COVID situation. We all are. However, being VERBALLY AGGRESSIVE and VERBALLY ABUSIVE to my staff is NOT acceptable on any level at any time. Make no mistake - this is ADULT BULLYING. It has increased markedly in the past few weeks and will not be tolerated.

It has become a daily occurrence that one of my staff is in tears because of a bullying client. I have since instructed my staff to hang up on anyone who treats them that way. If you are a bully, then we don't need you as a client.

I strongly suspect other veterinary facilities feel the same way, so I doubt you will get service elsewhere using the same attitude.

For all businesses COVID has resulted in staff losses, slow response times, delays in service, and extended appointment times. We are trying to help as many pets and people with the resources we have available. Safety protocols slow down service, but they are in place to protect YOU as well as my staff. If one of us gets sick with COVID-19, we are shut down for a minimum of two weeks and nobody gets seen. If someone must take stress leave, our service will basically be cut in half. Hiring more staff is not an easy undertaking, because most people don't want the extra risk of exposure in a workplace at this time. My staff are to be admired and applauded for the risks they take as essential workers for the past 16 weeks, interacting 2900 times with people, each and every one a personal danger to themselves. They do it for the love of your pets, despite the risks. Don't abuse them.

Unfortunately, despite the announcement by the Premier that restrictions for businesses will be loosened, for our hospital (and most veterinary hospitals) it does not mean that spay/neuter services are immediately available, nor does it mean that clients will be allowed access inside the building. We are working to be back to full services as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, enjoy the single defiant red tulip, Central Park, New York, 2019.

UPDATE ON COVID PROCEDURES March 24

OPENING:
Following the government announcement on closure of essential services, veterinary facilities will remain open as an essential service. Those services required for animal and human health or are time sensitive, such as rabies vaccinations, heartworm, flea and tick medications, puppy/kitten vaccines and emergency services will continue to be available.

That being said, non-essential veterinary services will be deferred, such as wellness exams, dental cleanings, nail trims etc. Call us if you are uncertain.

PROTOCOLS:
To allow us to provide services for as long as possible under the current circumstances, we are minimizing the number of people entering the building.

When you arrive for an appointment or to pick up supplies, please CALL US FIRST from your car in the parking lot. If you do not have a cell phone, knock on our door and we will temporarily provide you with a wireless device. We will pick up your pet from your vehicle, and deliver foods and medications to your vehicle as well. Payment will be by card transaction only. No cash will be accepted.

Thank you all for your ongoing support and patience. We'll get through it.

Here's an update on our COVID-19 situation to date. Sorry its such a "long" post. Resources are being stretched in an attempt to comply with containment principles and maintain social distancing while providing services as close to normal as possible.

1) Firstly, and as expressed in our previous post, when you call for an appointment you will be asked questions about your travel history and your current respiratory health. Please answer these as honestly as you can, as our health and the health of other clients depends on it. If one of the staff contracts the virus, we will have no choice but to temporarily shut down.

2) When you arrive, you will find the front door locked. Please call ahead of your appointment, call us from the parking lot, or knock on our door. We have found there can be too many people in our reception area to maintain proper social distancing, so we are limiting numbers in the area. This should not slow down services. Front lawn exams may be necessary in certain situations, and sometimes we may examine your pet inside the facility while we keep in communication with you in your vehicle.

3) Out telemedicine ability is being expanded. Call us for advice, and for appropriate problems we may ask you to send us videos or photos. Don't forget to include a ruler or a coin (tails up) for scale when taking photos, and pay attention to the focus. Call us for the appropriate address to send the data.

4) This morning we received notice from our suppliers that there has been such a huge demand that they are both limiting orders and not accepting any new orders until noon on Friday March 20th. This will allow them to catch up on orders and restock. As time goes on, these delays will likely decrease as the panic buying of resources decreases, but in the short term, further delays are possible.

Thanks everyone for your help and understanding.

Recently, several people have requested large amounts of supplies to tide them over during the anticipated COVID-19 situation. Most of this gathering behaviour is not necessary, as there is no reason to suppose food and drug manufacturers will be closing down. Consequently, we will be limiting orders to reasonable quantities to allow the resources to be shared so all can benefit.

As you know, the new coronavirus is impacting all our lives, and our profession is now affected as well.

As of today, Monday March 16th, when you call we will be asking a series of questions to best determine how to serve you best while protecting our staff and other members of our community.

Depending on your travel history, exposure, and symptoms, we may ask you to remain in your car while we examine your pet, or have one of your friends bring your pet to us. During this time, we can communicate with you by phone while your pet is being attended. Pick-up of foods and medications may be done in a similar fashion.

Non-essential vaccinations will be postponed. Please call us for information about your pet.

As things change, we will keep you informed on this page.
