Today would have been our 9th gotcha day with sweet Libby. We didn’t quite make it, she gained her wings earlier this year.

She was our first rescue dog and we never looked back. Many fosters and even a palliative pup have have called our place home. Libby sparked in all of us a passion for rescue!! Simply because someone took the time to save her many other lives have been saved.

Thank you Libby for the amazing years we spent together. Most of all for giving me the honour of being your human!!! Until we meet again sweet girl!! ❤️🌈

in honour of our adopted dogs past and present i have been working on a "dogs of shed" calendar in an effort to raise money for Carters Forever Rescue & Sanctuary. we adopted both julius and billie from carter's. since the end of last year and all throughout this year i have been taking photos (amateur photos) of dogs to create the calendar. the essence of the calendar is happy dogs that have found happy homes. my goal is to help brenda at carter's. she runs a small rescue and relies on donations and volunteers to support her operations. because the heart of this project is not to be summed up in a quick post i have written more about it on my website.

today with the help of this beautiful deaf dogo argentino, ella (), i am announcing and launching the pre-sales of the "dogs of shed" 2024 calendar. visit our website www.shedpotterybyjohann.com to read the full story and to secure your copy. $25 (pick up and shipping worldwide).

this photo is an outtake. more details and previews will follow in the coming weeks as the project continues to unfold.

thank you for helping us make a difference.

Our reality 😔
Two gals who needed assistance Momma to Mia *we are still unsure of the puppies' HW status and Odis formally Crystal we've committed to helping get WELL.
I truly hate this part of rescue the most, continually fundraising. It takes time away from the dogs and the work we do daily at the Ruff Start New Beginnings Rescue Retreat visitors

With shelters and rescues LITERALLY bursting at the seams we can only exist with your help.
We currently have an additional 1400$ on our rescue credit card but my hope is that with our attendance at the Colborne trash to treasure yard sale and our comedy night, that balance will be covered.
Alas, we still are in need of a whopping 4K for Momma to Mia and Odis.
We have collected 505$ to date. 140$ fudge fundraiser and 365$ in empties.

Our kennel IS FULL of adoptable dogs, however, each needs a very specific home. That's our mission to help those who might not get a chance elsewhere.
We understand 100% that times are tough for everyone and we're grateful for every PENNY donated.

2$ adds up quickly, if you have an extra 2$ to give it can make a difference, a Ruff Start Dog gets another chance at a New Beginning.

If you have empties I'm HAPPY to fetch them.
We'll do whatever it takes to support the dogs in our care.
To make ANY donation or to sponsor a dog we are [email protected] both etransfer/PayPal welcome and appreciated.
Cheques welcome too, as always made to Ruff Start New Beginnings Rescue 527 Chapman Rd Colborne, On K0K1S0

Thanks, friends 💓
Thanks, Sherri for the thermometer of HOPE *One of her favorite things is to MOVE that needle UP! 😊

This post is crucial for people to read / share. The amount of animals being euthanized by shelter, some rescues, and vets due to overcrowding / no funding / no adopters / human failure (moving/sudden allergies/no training/new relationship or baby, accidental litter, medical issues...) is a true crisis. This is happening ALL over Ontario, every single week, right here in the GTA. We see the posts and numbers that the general public does not.

This was written by Denise from Mattie's Place:

🔴 STOP purchasing dogs off sell sites. There is no support in place to help you when the dog turns out to be a very different dog than what was described.

🔴 STOP buying dogs from backyard breeders. Actually, just stop buying dogs. We need to bring breeding to a very slow trickle in Canada right now. We have ZERO capacity for the dogs already alive in our Country fighting for their very existence.

🔴 STOP "rescuing" dogs from "bad situations" that you can't keep yourself. Rescues & shelters are full. If you rescue a dog, you are responsible for that dog. Don't think a rescue or shelter is going to bail you out of the "rescue" you decided to take on.

[ VAL UPDATE ]

Val joined Mattie's Place May 20th, just moments away from euthanasia. You can catch up on her story in the below links if you're not familiar.

She has undergone surgery once and had medicated bandage changes twice weekly since arrival at Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital - TVEH under the care of the incredible Dr. Joudrey.

Last week, Val decided she was going to jump in the swimming pool, and unfortunately, she got her wound infected after so much diligence by her foster family for the previous 5 weeks.

It was a sad setback. She was put back on antibiotics and bandaged again with her medicated pack on the wound.

Yesterday, Val's bandaging came unravelled and her medicated pack that is supposed to be on her wound wasn't there. She was rushed back to TVEH as we just couldn't risk any further setbacks with her wound and the surgeon she needed to see was leaving in only a few hours.

Well, it turned out to be the best visit yet!

Val's wound, that started out the entire size of her rib cage, is now down to the size of 2 toonies. The infection from last week cleared up and Val is officially naked now - - no more bandages, just a surgical suit and daily medicated flushes.

We are hoping, beyond hope, that it continues to heal, which it should, and we're officially done with this tragic injury. 🤞🤞🤞

HUGE immense gratitude to everyone that contributed towards all of Val's medical care. It's been an expensive journey under the surgical and twice weekly care of specialized surgeons, but it gave her the absolute best opportunity to have this horrendous wound healed in the quickest amount of time and skilled eyes to pivot as needed to stay ahead of any problems.

TRIPLE HUGE thanks to her foster family. My gosh. I couldn't have done this without them. From welcoming her into their home, to the incredible care they have given her and sacrifices they have made (like driving 4 hours yesterday from the cottage to get her back into TVEH). Jordan and Alexis, I appreciate you both so very much. For so very much. Thank you a million times over.

“Dogs wear muzzles because they bite.”

No ✋❌

Just because a dog is wearing a muzzle, does not mean that they bite. Many dog guardians utilise muzzles as a preventative measure to keep their dogs and others safe.

Here are many reasons someone may opt to muzzle their dog:

Scavenging
To protect wildlife
Prevent grabbing or mouthing people or dogs
Medical management such as for wound licking or jaw surgery

These are just a few! However, there are many people who choose to muzzle their dogs due to the extra consideration other people and dog guardians give them - often preventing bites by simply sending a clear signal to others that space is needed.

Consider this: Waiting for a dog to bite before introducing a muzzle… is sometimes too late, dogs shouldn’t have to bite in order to ‘qualify’ for a muzzle!

Introducing a muzzle BEFORE a dog bites is the responsible thing to do, there’s so much judgement when muzzling a dog that ‘hasn’t even bitten’ and that’s contributing to the number of dogs that have successfully bitten - if a muzzle was introduced earlier we might have been able to avoid a bite, potentially saving a life!

Our Family Manners programs try our best to focus on what you are really looking for with your canine companions.
We want warm friendly greetings with less jumping, walking without the leash tight and focus on you at times when you need it, because the walk is for both of you right?
Recalls from a distracted state, minor stays as needed to stay out of the kitchen or allow you to get something done without them investigating everything thing, crate training, barking and more. Level one will give you the foundations, level 2 we do more implementation, increase duration and add distractions.
Not sure if it's for you? Reach out today!
The June 23rd class has 2 spots remaining!
