Protect your furry friends from the dangers of foxtail grass 🌾 This plant can pose serious risks to dogs due to its sharp seeds that easily lodge in their ears, eyes, nose, and paws. These seeds can cause infections, abscesses, and severe discomfort for your beloved pet. Be vigilant during walks or outdoor playtime to prevent any potential harm. Check your dog thoroughly after being outdoors in areas where foxtails are present, especially during warmer months when they dry out and become more hazardous. Your pup’s safety is top priority - stay informed and take measures to keep them safe from this common but risky plant. 🐾🚫
Keeping Cats cool during summer weather 🐈
While cats generally tolerate the heat better than us, they do suffer on hot days. Here are a few ways to make your feline companion more comfortable - both before and during a heatwave.
Keep Your Cat Well Groomed
A tangle-free coat will help keep your cat cool, so brush your cat often over the summer months.
Stroke Your Cat With a Damp Washcloth
On hot days, gently stroking your cat with a damp washcloth or paper towel can help them cool down. And we all know that every cat loves a good pat.
Use a Small Box Fan
To create a cool breeze for your cat, place a small box fan on the floor near an air conditioner or open window. For extra cooling power, place a frozen water bottle in front of the fan.
Make a ‘Cool Water Bottle’ For Your Cat
To transform your cat’s favourite lounging spot to a chilled oasis, fill a drink bottle with cold water and leave it in the freezer overnight. In the morning, wrap the bottle in a towel and place it in position, ready for a relaxing cat-nap.
Some Final Heat Safety Tips
Pay attention to your cat's feet as they have sweat glands on their paws. If your cat is leaving wet paw prints, it’s a sign of sweating, so you’ll need to replenish her fluids.
Always check sheds and garages before shutting doors. Cats can find their way into all sorts of hidey holes, particularly if they’re looking for a shady spot to cool down in.
Watch for symptoms of heatstroke. These include excessive panting, lethargy, drooling, fever, vomiting, collapse or unconsciousness. If you’re worried about your cat, call your vet immediately.
Heat stroke is a term commonly used for hyperthermia or elevated body temperature. The most common cause of heat stroke leaving a dog in a car with inadequate ventilation. The dog's body temperature in this situation can elevate very rapidly, often within minutes. It is important to remember that dogs cannot control their body temperature by sweating as human, their primary way of regulating their body temperature is by panting.
Dogs suffering from heatstroke can have elevated breathing rates, dry or sticky gums, abnormal gum color, bruising in the gums, may appear lethargic or disoriented, and can have seizures.
Heat stroke is an emergency. Safe, controlled reduction of body temperature is a priority. Cool water ( NOT COLD) may be poured over the head, stomach, armpits and feet, or cool cloths may be applied to these areas. If using cool wet cloths, these should be continually replaced, or they will start to retain heat. A continuous flow of air across the dog will help increase evaporative heat loss until treatment is received at your veterinary hospital.
Remember to stay safe and keep your pets cool in this hot summer weather!
In a continued effort to provide our team with measures to ensure our clients receive the best possible care, we will be closed today from 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm for a training seminar.

When birds fly and perch in the wild, they use their toenails to grip onto a variety of surfaces, both smooth and rough. Domesticated birds, however, do not have access to this wide range of different perching surfaces, and so their nails are not exposed to the same textures.
By keeping up with regular nail trims for your pet bird, you can decrease the risk that they may catch their toenails on items, furniture, or clothing. Your bird will not risk hurting themselves, and you will not risk damage to your home at the same time.

With the first long weekend of summer approaching, comes fireworks in many places in the province. For animals, fireworks are terrifying-and could be fatal. Many dogs and cats flee in fear from their deafening blasts. Animals becomes confused and panicked. Frightened animals may flee their homes trying to escape the startling and confusing sounds.
Prepare your home and animal companions before the event:
- Play some soothing background music, or turn on the TV.
- Close the curtains or blinds.
- Make sure that all of your animals are wearing collars with current identification tags and ideally, microchipped.
- If you know your pet is scared by fireworks, ask your veterinarian for help. There are medications and techniques that might help alleviate your pet's fear and anxiety.
If your does become lost, contact your local animal control, and check social media for found pets.
We hope you have a safe and fun start to summer, enjoy the Long Weekend!

🦠🐾 Important Update: Rabies Alert 🐾🦠
Dear Pet Parents,
Recently, our community has seen multiple positive rabies cases. As your trusted veterinary clinic, we want to ensure you have all the information you need to protect your beloved pets and family.
What is Rabies?
Rabies is a deadly virus that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans. It’s most commonly transmitted through the bite of an infected animal.
Why Vaccination is Crucial:
Life-Saving Protection: Rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms appear. The good news is that the virus is 100% preventable with appropriate vaccination 💉
Community Safety: Vaccinating your animals helps prevent the spread of rabies in our community, protecting other animals and people.
Legal Requirement: In many areas, rabies vaccination is required by law for pets.
Vaccinate Your Animals: Ensure your animals are up-to-date with their rabies vaccinations. If you’re unsure, call us to check their vaccination status.
Approved rabies vaccines are available for cats, dogs, ferrets, horses, cattle and sheep.
Has your pet had a skunk encounter? 🦨💨 If there is any concern your pet may have been bitten by a wild animal, do not delay in bringing them in for evaluation. A booster vaccination may be required. In Manitoba, skunks are the most common carrier but ANY mammal, including people, can become infected.
Our Commitment:
We are dedicated to keeping your animals healthy and safe. Please call us at 204-444-3615 to schedule an appointment or to ask any questions you may have.
Let’s work together to keep our animals and community safe from rabies!

Tick Awareness ‼️ Tick questing refers to the behaviour exhibited by ticks when they actively seek out hosts. Ticks do not jump or fly, instead they wait on tips of grasses, shrubs, or leaf litters, extending their front legs in a questing position. When a host brushes past, the tick grabs onto it, attaches itself, and begins feeding on its blood. Enjoy our best tick questing impressions, and if you have not started your pets tick prevention yet, it’s not too late. Give us a call today!

A day in the life of Gerty and Gotem 🐾 Gerty and Gotem are our wonderful clinic cats, and a super important part of our team. A typical day starts with breakfast, of course the most important meal of the day. After breakfast, Gotem usually makes himself at home on the heat mat, which is for our surgery patients, and he may or may not move when our patients need it. It’s a very important job keeping our patients warm. Gerty will snuggle in on Teclas desk, to supervise her and make sure she is staying on task 😉 Lunch time is a favourite time, if you don’t eat fast you are very likely to lose a bite or two of your lunch to Gerty and Gotem. I food is safe. 3pm is their mid day snack time, and they will let us know if we are late by pacing and yelling. They enjoy their canned food on their lick mats 😋 usually it is time to nap again, until around 5pm when it’s time for the treat game. Gerty is an absolute star at it and loves to gallop across the treatment room floor chasing and catching treats. We hope you enjoy watching their day! 🐱

Show us your best smile, like Tucker! 😃 Canine Periodontal disease is one of the most common and serious pet health problems, affecting approximately 80% of dogs by the age of 3. At-home prevention is as important as regular teeth cleaning by veterinarians. Unless you provide teeth cleaning for your dog at home, periodontal disease will progress regardless of the care provided by your veterinarian. The key to management of gum disease in dogs is prevention! As long as the surfaces of the teeth are cleaned frequently, the gums will stay healthy. There are several home care options to choose from and anything you can do to help prevent plaque and tartar buildup will be beneficial. Brushing your dogs teeth at home is the single most effective way to keep gums healthy and plaque controlled. Chew treats can also be helpful in the prevention of plaque and tartar accumulation. It is not recommended that dogs chew on dried natural bones, as they are often associated with broken teeth and damaged gums. From now until the end of February we are offering discounts on dental cleanings, give us a call to schedule your pets dental check up today! (204) 444-3615
