Dr. Hook, Dr. Brendan and Dr. Dylan with assistance from RVT Ashley and Monika performed a pulp capping procedure (mini root canal) on a horse that broke it's incisor (front tooth) exposing the sensitive pulp cavity. This procedure should allow us to save the tooth and avoid a difficult and lengthy extraction. Thanks to for helping with with advice and supplies!

Meet Dracarys 🐾

We first saw Dracarys at the start of the year after his owner noticed he was lame on his left front leg. Dracarys was seen by Dr. Ray in March and he noticed a reluctance to use the left front leg and a decrease in range of motion of the shoulder joint. We took x-rays and noticed decreased joint space in the affected shoulder joint. Dr. Ray recommended at home massage and laser therapy.

Dracarys was started with 2 treatments in March, one being Cartrophen, and the other therapeutic laser treatments. We started the laser treatments 3 times a week for the first 10 treatments and then started decreasing to the lowest effective dose. His owner noticed an improvement after the first 5 treatments (within 2 weeks) and Dracarys was back to normal after 8 treatments. Now Dracarys gets his treatment when he needs it to ensure he is comfortable and able to keep up with his exciting life!

Check out these cuties coming to visit us at our Bashaw location! Kelia the toy poodle, Shyla the yorkie and Dexter the doxie all came in for their DHPP boosters. We even had the lovely Snuggles in for a pedicure! 🥳

CALANDER PHOTO CONTEST UPDATE

We have been trying really hard to have a successful first year of a calendar full of our clients pet photos! We have received lots of submissions, however the majority of them do not meet the 300 DPI resolution requirement. We are EXTENDING our submission deadline until the end of the month! We are especially looking for photos of farm animals but would also love to see some more photos of your small animals too.

We would like to introduce our newest veterinarian at Central Vet Clinic!

Dr. Jessica Adam graduated vet school from St. Georges University in the Carribean in 2023. She has been working in primarily small animal practice but is excited to come back to mixed animal practice!

She lives in Ponoka with her dog Fawn and in her spare time she likes to hike, camp & read. Please give a warm welcome to Dr. Jessica the next time you are at the clinic.

These beautiful Friesian horses were in for some routine dental work with Dr. Trevor. They also brought their emotional support pony with them... much to the pony's surprise, he had had to get a turn too!

**UPDATE - Owner has been found! **

FOUND

One of our staff found this pup on their way home from work today. She was found at the intersection of 50th Ave & 43rd St (bottom of chicken hill). She has been checked for a microchip & tattoo and has neither.

She is safe in a kennel at the clinic right now. If you know where she belongs, please message the page or call the clinic when we open at 8 am. If she is not claimed by morning, we will contact Old MacDonald Kennels & Animal Services .

Back on April 20th we posted a picture of a little golden retriever puppy that was born via c-section.

Well look at these big brutes now!! They will be 8 weeks old this week and today they were in for their first set of vaccinations.

Last week Dr. Trevor removed this tiny sliver from the cornea of a horse.

If your horse suddenly gets a painful swollen eye, make sure to call your veterinarian as eye problems can escalate very quickly.

Jessica comes to us with several years of experience working in a vet clinic. She lives in Leduc with her partner, dog named Morgan and cat named Tipsy. In her free time she enjoys working on the farm, fishing and camping.

Say hello to Ozzie!

He has a bit of a story to share about a condition he suffered from as a puppy. When Ozzie was about 8 weeks old the doctors diagnosed him with juvenile cellulitis, or 'puppy strangles'. (Swipe to see a picture of him at that time).

His face and lymph nodes were swollen and he had infection around his mouth and eyes. This is an uncommon condition in young puppies, and the cause is unknown. There is an immune-mediated component to the condition meaning that the puppy's own immune system is attacking itself. Ozzie exhibited all the classic clinical signs of the condition, so his diagnosis was made easily and we were able to begin treatment.

Ozzie had a bit of an longer recovery than some pups, but look how well he is doing now! He was treated with steroids and antibiotics.

*Note that puppy strangles is in no way related to equine strangles and it is not contagious*

Pre-season soundness exams are important to identify subclinical and clinical lameness problems before they become more significant during the show season. Here is a horse with significant coffin joint swelling and inflammation which can be treated appropriately so that your horse can work at their best for as long as possible.
