MY thoughts on training...

Are you a left or right, or straight down the middle type of trainer? Social media sure is an eye-opener when it comes to so many vastly different training or “breaking” techniques employed by various cultures and equine disciplines around the world. Just like people, not all horses learn in the same manner or work in similar environments. Not all trainers are adaptable in their approach to training and many have a mindset that doesn’t allow them to explore a different way of communication.

The term “breaking” a horse can be summed up in the word itself. The literal definition of the word “break” as defined in the dictionary, is to fracture, shatter, smash, crack, etc. In other words, dominate at whatever cost. Some might find this a rather harsh approach in the way it is described. After watching so many buck-out a horse and encourage it, the term fits to break down a horse. Trainers that use a lot of hardware, restraining equipment and training apparatus, without a skill set or knowledge in proper use, are trainers of ignorance and are abusers. I would put such trainers in the right sided category.

We can take a big leap to the left sided trainer who does the extreme opposite. Being too liberal in their approach to training and rewarding inappropriately. Many make excuses for behavioral issues without addressing them in the first place. This creates a spoiled 1,000 lbs. horse who often times ends up in a very bad place because of a well intended by unrealistic training technique that has created the biggest Cookie Monster and ill-mannered horse. Horses need rules and respect for personal space. That’s a given.

That leaves us with the straight down the middle type of trainer. This is a trainer who combines patience and firmness by taking the time it takes to train. Throw the training schedule out and focus on the actual art of training. It can vary with each horse and should. It is the trainer who thinks before he/she acts and listens to the horse. The horse is speaking volumes but you cannot train effectively if you do not listen. A simple exercise is to watch how horses interact in their natural environment. There is always a leader and they are respected. And then there are the followers and yes, some want-to-be leaders in the herd who like to bully on occasion. Establishing yourself as the leader is earned through trust, firmness and unbelievable patience. All the other stuff like training aids, rewarding with treats should only be a complement and not a ‘go to’ tool every single time. I personally hate to see draw reins on a horse during every single session its ridden. I think they are far too over-used and abused today. I could go on, yet I regress as there are wonderful trainers who use these tools properly and appropriately. The trainer that gauges his/her training in little tiny accomplishments with subtle control and little hardware engaged, is the person you want in your corner working that horse. Too often horses are rushed with aggressive trainers for clients who expect miracles in a few months. Too often those horses are never really allowed to understand what is being asked yet do a job because it is demanded. If an owner cannot continue the training process, it is a loss. A horse that works easily and willingly is one who enjoys its job and understands it. That my friend requires time and good foundation training.

Would your horse purchase you?
If rolls were reversed and horses went to an auction to purchase a human, would your horse choose you?

What might be important to your horse?

The number one thing your horse is going to be shopping for is a human with good feel and timing, black and white instructions, clear communication and fair guidelines.

We are all human, which area of these things can you improve on?

If you can be honest with yourself and become aware of your habits and behaviours, you can improve yourself for your horse.

For me, my emotional fitness is high on my awareness chart. Some days I have a lot on my plate. Some days I blame myself for inconsistency, desire for comfort and I let overwhelm get the best of me. This causes me to bounce up and down on the emotional scale. Some times my horse gets a completely different version of me. Therefore effecting my fairness, my feel and timing, and my clear communication.

If she had the choice, she would not choose me.
And that’s why I work so hard to improve in and outside of the arena.

Would your horse choose you?

Why I Love this Journey

It all truly started once I bought Harmony; She was the first horse I purchased on my own. Harmoy is a wildie, meaning she was round up with a group of feral horses at 6 months of age. And let me tell you, the personality is strong! She had a little bit of professional training but not much done with her. Long story short she didn’t have the foundation we needed so I restarted her. Eager to learn and do things on my own had it’s challenges, but one I was willing to fight for. I’ve always told Harmony that we would grow old together and I’d say “We made it!”

With all that I’ve learned restarting Harmony, I’ve grown great interest for horsemanship. Watching the horse figure out what your teaching, feeling their energy, and once it clicks with them, is very rewarding. I love it so much because you’re never finished; You and your horse never stop learning. The skies the limit.

I follow a specific method for the most part, adding in my own little pieces here and there. I love desensitizing exercises because I believe the more, bigger, louder things you show them the more confidence they will have out in the world. No, you cant show them everything but its how they react is what I look for.

Another part of our journey is self development and the horse being our teachers. Horses have this way of mirroring our souls; When we tune in, watch and listen, we learn. We also learn courage, strength, and trust from our horses. Then we learn where to apply these things to our own lives and use them to grow. Guided personal growth from the horses is how I’ve grown into the person I am and how I continue to do so.
