Dock Diving Lessons: I have one beginner lesson slot available tomorrow evening, and two advanced slots on Thursday. These are the last evening lessons before our next trial.

Beginners:- your dog should be a very confident swimmer and eager to fetch to sign up for dock diving. No previous dock diving experience is necessary- as long as your dog can swim and fetch we teach the rest.

Advanced students- if your dog is confidently jumping off the dock at the pool here without hesitating, advanced class is the class for you.

The Pool is Open!
To celebrate- we are offering a 2 hour open dock practice tomorrow from noon-2pm (two hours for the price of one!)

Open Dock Practices are for experienced dogs- they don't have to be superstars but they do need to have been previously introduced to the pool and be able to get in and out on their own without coaxing. If your dog hasn’t been to the pool before, don’t sign up for this just yet. After you’ve had a lesson I’ll let you know if/when your dog is ready to start coming to practices! (It is totally fine for dogs to be jumping from the ramp rather than the dock, but they need to be going in eagerly to qualify for practices like this).

I have opened the booking software for future open dock practices, beginner and advanced dock diving classes, Hoopers class, and some Shed Antler Drop In Classes as well as a couple of slots for pool rentals. The same rules apply for pool rentals as open dock practices- your dog needs to be going in without help since there is no instruction provided.

Beginner vs Advanced Dock CLASS- what is the difference?

Beginner class is suitable for dogs who have already learned to swim (and enjoy it), and enjoy retrieving. It is where we introduce the dogs to dock diving by first starting from the ramp so they can build up confidence and learn to get in and out of the pool. We progress in beginner classes until the dog is eagerly jumping off of the dock without hesitating. How many times your dog attends BEGINNER before progressing to advanced could vary! Some dogs need only one beginner lesson. Some spend two months at the beginner level. There is no way to know in advance because every dog progresses at their own level which is dependant on their own confidence, their previous training history, their breed predispositions, etc.

Advanced class is where your dog should go once they are confidently jumping off the dock. Even if you still ‘feel’ like a beginner, this class is where will refine skills once we are past the point of wondering IF the dog will jump, and we are concentrating on how they jump, how far they will jump, and introducing or skill-building in the specialty disciplines. If you aren’t sure if your dog is right for this level, send me a message first and I’ll help you decide :)

Agility/Hoopers Practice
Open to dogs who have had some agility training. A standard agility course and a Hoopers course will each be set but handlers are not required to run the full course and can choose to run parts of either course as desired. Agility/Hoopers Practice is not a lesson, practice time slots are shared between 4 dogs and handlers should work together to change heights as needed. Beginner dogs are welcome as long as handlers do not attempt to put dogs on or through obstacles they haven’t been taught.

New This Year:
1. Drop In Shed Antler Class
We’ll have a course set up so that experienced dogs can train on level 2 or higher searches but this class is also open to beginner dogs. Small class sizes will let us customize each turn for each dog. Dogs should have interest in retrieving to take this class, but do not need shed antler experience specifically.

2. Hoopers For Agility Dogs
Hoopers is a sport that is new to this area and is similar to agility in some ways, but without jumping, contacts or weaves. This class is open to dogs with some agility experience so that we can build their existing handling skills and teach distance and directionals skills specific to Hooper as well. Dogs with Hoopers experience or Dogs with previous agility experience will both fit in this class.

Class dates are currently only posted for May and June. I will wait to see interest levels before opening booking for July. If you are interested in private lessons, message me as private options are available but very limited.

Most people ask: what brand harness do you recommend?

Unfortunately it's not that simple. Dogs are different shapes and sizes, and each harness brand has their own morphology- some fit specific breeds and shapes incredibly well and terribly on other dogs. You DO need a harness designed for dog powered sports. And the fit is important. In this lesson I will teach you what harness qualities to look for so that you can tell if your harness is well-fitting and suitable for your sports of choice.

For the sports we are discussing in this class, you will be looking at harnesses designed for light, fast pulling sports. Weight-pulling harnesses are very different, and not what we are after here. Nor do we want to look at the harnesses designed for sulkies or carts.

Space available in our Beginner Agility class that starts this week- Tuesday at 5 pm for 4 weeks!
Small class sizes- dogs do need to have some previous training experience (understand learning for food or toy rewards, basic sit and come) and will learn foundation skills for agility, an introduction to obstacles, and handling.
