We all know to break our horse’s concentrate ration into multiple meals per day, but do we know why it’s so important? Take a look at this Mad Barn post that breaks down the reasoning!

We suggest feeding Mad Barn Visceral+ and Mad Barn Optimal Probiotic to support your horse’s hind gut health and gut microbe balance!

Feeding large amounts of grain in a single meal can overwhelm a horse's stomach and small intestine, causing excess starch to reach the hindgut. This rapid fermentation lowers the pH and disrupts the balance of gut microbes, leading to digestive issues. To prevent this, limit starch intake to no more than 1-2 grams per kilogram of body weight per meal. Since food passes quickly through the small intestine—about 1 foot per minute—digesta can reach the cecum within 45 minutes of eating, emphasizing the need for limiting high starch intake.

Note that your equine veterinarian is one of your greatest allies this season, so be sure to consult them and discuss vaccination and deworming protocols appropriate for your horse’s situation. This is also a great opportunity to chat about recommended changes in nutrition and exercise programs as well!
