The Barefoot Ranch: Manitoba Horse Rescue & Sanctuary

The Barefoot Ranch: Manitoba Horse Rescue & Sanctuary The Barefoot Ranch is a registered charity that rescues horses and helps them live their best lives. It is the perfect piece of land for horses.

The Barefoot Ranch is located four miles North of Teulon, MB. It is a 120-acre parcel of land that is well treed, featuring natural as well as man-made water sources. We have been at this location since 2012. Soon after moving here, we started to notice a need to provide a sanctuary in the area for horses. There were multiple circumstances that arose that brought many horses in need to us. We bega

n with the thought of rehabilitating the horses and selling them to recoup our expenses, but that was a short-lived dream. In 2016 we decided to incorporate to make our organization more official. Over the past few years, we have rescued over 40 horses. If you are able to donate, please do visit our website and click on the donate button. If you can’t donate, please like, share, and comment on our social media posts to help us get the word out.

This darling girl came to us on January 7, 2024. She came to us with a large cresty neck and was horribly foundered in all four feet. She was wearing boots on her two front legs and when we removed them she had sores on her pasterns. Unfortunately, at the end of January we were put on quarantine until March 25th so no further vet or farrier work was done during that time.

Beauty did get strangles on February 13th and had it quite severely but because she had such large fat deposits already she was still at a 7 on the BCS scale when she recovered. She was dewormed and deloused at the end of April and she was doing well. We had to get x-rays of her legs before she could be properly trimmed by our farrier. She got those x-rays on June 3rd but we had not received the results yet when she was seized.

I hope they did x-rays on her wherever she is so she could be properly trimmed there. We suspect there is some abnormal growth in her actual legs which were contributing to her lameness. Hopefully we get her back here within the next few months and we can help her to recover.

This bo**er is Azrute, or Azzie for short. He came to us on August 20th, 2023 as a 14 year old thoroughbred, he was a seriously pushy and skinny stallion. We immediately put him on mash and 11 days later he was gelded and his teeth were floated. When he still had not gained weight in the following two months, we had him undergo some blood tests. He was put on Omeprazole for a possible ulcer and treated for that for the next thirty days.

I called Azzie a bo**er because he was such a pushy jerk when he first got to the ranch. He actually smashed the gate into my forehead when he had first arrived and I saw stars for a few minutes. Once he was gelded and had his teeth floated, his attitude improved somewhat. This dude was so smart though! You could call his name and he would come running, he only came when you called his name. I had never seen a horse only come to his name like that.

Despite the fact that he was such a jerk he did grow on me and was not really affected by strangles but he never did seem to gain weight at all, no matter what you did for him. He was one of the horses taken on June 11th, I hope to see him again within the next couple months and hopefully he is doing well where he is.

β€œDid you know that if you put 100 black ants and 100 red ants in a jar, nothing will happen?
But if you shake the jar hard, the ants start killing each other.
The red ants consider the black ants their enemies, and the black ants consider the red ants their enemies.
The true enemy is the one shaking the jar.
The same thing happens in human society. So, before we attack each other, we should ask ourselves, who is shaking the jar?”
Stop the division already and ask yourself β€œWho’s shaking the jar?”
It’s simple.
Stop looking for things to be offended by and Look for the things that unite us, moreso than what divides us!!!

This gorgeous girl is Autumn, she is a 24-year-old Quarter Horse that came to us on August 13th. Autumn came with a group of three horses that were on a little dirt paddock with year-round hay. There was a relationship breakup and her owner needed to find her a place, she promised me these guys would beef up as soon as they were on grass and she wasn't kidding. Look at the difference in this girl in only 12 days on grass!

I quickly saw the heart in this girl and actually took her on the Children's Wish Ride last year, where she was an absolute dream! Her former owner was there and I was so excited for them to see each other. Autumn had her hooves trimmed and was dewormed the first month she was at the ranch and did great but we noticed in October she had begun to lose weight. Dr. Neil floated her teeth on November 7th and
did some blood work on her. She was diagnosed with a possible Ulcer and was put on Omeprazole to treat it.

Autumn gained weight over the winter and was doing great and then strangles hit, luckily it did not affect her too badly and she didn't lose weight like some of the others. Autumn was in great shape when she was seized on June 11th. I sure hope this dream boat comes back to us healthy and happy within the next few months. I would sure like to see her again and her former owner would love to have her back as well.

UPDATE: We are absolutely blown away by how people can take the simplest things and make them sound so nefarious. These two horses are Remi (Smudge is his registered name) and R***r. They are at a foster home and are both looking for forever homes. Sherri, is not able to have care and control of animals at the moment. There is no restriction on The Barefoot Ranch itself. That being said things do not always work out with foster homes and horses are sometimes in need of new homes and we have wonderful volunteers that are willing to take responsibility for these animals and find them new homes so Sherri is not going against the court order. It is as simple as that. It always has and always will be about what's in the best interest of the horse. We are thrilled to report that Remi will be going back to his original owner and she is ecstatic to have him back.

Remi and R***r are looking fantastic!!!

A few of our volunteers went out today to check on the boys at their foster home! They look amazing! They are doing great on pasture and still so happy to have each other. They are the best of friends.

So happy to see them doing so good together!

We received a call in late 2022 regarding a cow named Ashanti! The call was from a couple of lovely girls that worked at a local dairy. These girls were concerned about a particular cow that was about to be taken to auction. We were told she was a lovely sweetheart that the farmers had determined was not producing. I am not sure if that means a baby or milk, but either way we became intrigued. The farmers wanted $800 for her and the girls wanted to help us raise the money to purchase her so we could bring her home to the ranch and she could live out her life just being a cow.

We put out the call to you, our supporters, to see if you were interested in helping us rescue a cow. You answered that call. Together with the girls, we raised $800 for Ashanti and we went to pick her up! When we arrived at the dairy barn and got the trailer backed into the spot and entered the barn, it was a very sad site! I saw dozens of cows with steel collars on, they were chained to concrete dividers in the center of the barn and they were standing on concrete with no bedding at all. I had to tell you I instantly wanted to save them all!

We were led directly to a little wooden stall that housed a couple of cows, Ashanti was one of them. They loaded her onto the horse trailer and we headed off to the ranch. We unloaded her and she was quite lovely, a little more timid than our other cows as they had been bottle babies. We had never taken in a full grown cow before. She was SO BIG!!! It was unbelievable how big a Holstein could get. Ashanti had two pasture mates, Mojo and Millie and we were receiving stuff from Loop Resource every second week. Mojo and Millie loved anything baking and bananas as well. Ashanti was quite confused by this and wasn't sure why they were so excited.

It wasn't long before Ashanti learned the routine and would excitedly run our way whenever she heard a wrapper. I am pretty sure their favorite were cake, cupcakes and pie. Holsteins are usually very thin and hippy, but I am happy to report we probably had the fattest Holsteins in the Interlake. We had 5 cows here at the ranch when they were seized and they were loved here very much. Cows are just like big dogs, if you treat them like treasured pets, that's how they act! I hope to see them again soon in the next few months and I will be sure to have a blueberry pie for each of them when I do

09/02/2024

This is Gramps, he is my favorite pig! He came to us on June 5th, 2022. He came with a group of 5 pigs and he was definitely the one that stood out in the crowd.

When we first got the pigs it was quite a struggle, they kept escaping and we kept trying to reinforce the fence so they couldn't get out. Anyone who had had pigs knows what a struggle it can be to keep them in. When we had all five of the pigs they were constantly escaping. At one point they got on the road and sweet gramps got hit by a car. It was absolutely devastating.

Myself and a couple of volunteers went on the other side of the road and tried to get him back to the house with a wagon and a blanket. Every time we got him set up, he would panic and jump off. We ended up being able to guide and lead him here with frequent rests. When we eventually got here I was extremely worried as I didn't want to have to put him down.

When the vet got here and had a look at him he said to let him heal and see where we go from here. Give him bute for pain and inflammation and watch his recovery. Gramps healed pretty quickly, it began with a pretty pronounced limp and slowly his limp became less and less. By the next summer he was once again rolling over for belly rubs and back to the happy pig he once was. We were so happy with his recovery.

We managed to successfully rehome three of our five pigs and had just Wilber and Gramps in the end. Once there were only two and we down-sized the pig pen we did not have any more escapes. I loved watching them and how clean they were in their lives, they had a little routine and it was adorable. They came to the gate for food, went in their little hut to sleep and then one corner of the pen for water and the far corner for their bathroom.

I miss Gramps and Wilber a lot and hope to see them again one day, hopefully within the next few months.

This beautiful girl is Misty, she came to us as a 10-year-old pony on March 20, 2022. We went out to pick her up and this little old guy met us in his yard. He took us to the cutest little paddock I had ever seen and there were two grey ponies in there. One was a cute little gelding running about happily, the other was a sweet little mare way back in the shelter and not coming out. My heart instantly sank because I knew there was a reason.

We walked to the shelter and put a halter on her and started to lead her out, this girl's hooves were so bad she could barely walk. I asked the man if he was interested in surrendering the gelding too. He said no, he was actually thinking of getting another mare to keep him company. At this point I think my heart hit the pit of my stomach. We try to remain as professional as possible in these situations so I didn't say anything to him just told him if he changed his mind we would be happy to come pick him up.

As we led Misty away to the trailer you could hear that gelding calling and calling for her, it was terrible. I asked the man one more time if he would surrender the gelding as well and he wouldn't do it. We walked in slow motion with this pony because it was as fast as she could go. We loaded her into the trailer and brought her home.

Robyn came to trim her for the first time on March 23, 2022. I can remember this girl basically leaping into the air the first few times Robyn tried to trim her but she eventually got to the point where her hooves got better and better. She was dewormed, deloused she did great here.

On June 3, 2023 Misty went to her forever home with a wonderful Mom and Dad and a lovely little boy of her own. Her name is now Belle and she has the best life, with the best family and we couldn't ask for any more for her. Her little boy calls her "My friend Belle"

WARNING - GRAPHIC PHOTOS

This lovely, elderly gentleman is Flash. I call him war horse. This boy came to us on August 20, 2023 at 29-years-old. He is a feisty Arabian, but still very sweet. He was not here very long when he got into a scrap with either a young wolf or a wild dog and won. The middle two photos are on August 31st when he was treated for the bite. I didn't even know what was going on until the vet shaved down his neck and you could clearly see the canines. Flash was treated for the injuries and given excede to take care of any infection from the bites. Apparently there is something in a wild canine's teeth that causes nasty infections. They do this to weeken their prey and then once they get sick and aren't able to get away quickly, they finish them off (nasty).

Flash recovered from this and we he was dewormed and deloused on September 24, 2023 and his hooves were trimmed on November 8th, 2023. He did pretty good all winter and lost some weight so we made sure to put a blanket on him to keep him warm and put him on unlimited hay and mash twice per day. On January 27, 2024 we found the abscesses on his neck and immediately sent photos to our vet. I was able to go into the clinic and get the swab kit, raced back to swab him and then took it in for testing. We immediately went on lockdown and started following biosecurity measures. We did, however, not announce to the public that we suspected strangles until we had a confirmed diagnoses.

Flash was cleared from Strangles by February 25th, 2024 and he was extremely thin by this point, the blanket I am sure was some help, but definitely no substitute for not eating. So back on the mash he went, with unlimited hay. We dewormed him in April with Ivermectin and then again in May with Quest Gold. On May 6th he also got a Vet check to see if anything else was wrong. His blood chemistry showed low protein and we were advised to add Alfalfa bales into the mix. This is when things got serious and flash was put into the large shelter in an individual pen and was fed like crazy. This boy is one hell of a fighter and he was finally starting to make a comeback until he was seized. I trust he is still recovering wherever he is and hopefully by now is looking pretty darn good.

I hope to see him again in the near future and I hope he looks as amazing as he did last summer
